For me A*Men is a comic world Villain while the B*Men is raised to save Mugler's comic world as a Superhero... The severe and intense -ve affect of A*Men could only be revived by B*Men and nothing else...

For me A*Men is a "hate" symbol and to love it you have to get B*Men.

A*Men is simply a junk drink of caramel, coffee and chocolate... while B*Men no doubt has a burning sugar aroma and coffee touch but with bearable amount and manly affect that is blended well with spicy and woody notes.

I tested both deeply on each hand with generous amount... as a result and matter of fact, I was trying to keep my hand away from my nose where I have sprayed A*Men while Ireally admired sniffing the forearm where I have splashed B*Men.
No doubt A*Men is better in power and silage but only if you want to feel like a COSTA AD of COFFEE in VANILLA & CARAMEL flavor... yakhhhhhhhhh....!!!

Angel for Women always stops me in my tracks and makes me fall instantly in love. So I really wanted to make Angel for Men work for me. It just doesn't.

I don't know if I'm too mature for it, but I get too much grief whenever I've tried to wear it. I don't know that I identify the "food" elements of it - chocolate, coffee, vanilla, but I do love the smell. In hindsight, I don't see it as masucline- pretty unisex.

I noted it was a very powerful EdT. Just a bit goes a long way. Be careful with this one because as many reviewers have noted, it's a very polarizing scent- and lots of people are close to nauseated by it in my experience.

One of the best bottle designs ever that's for sure.

Far too sweet for me. I'm also not sure why they didn't go for a smooth velvet-like chocolate note in this rather than the cheap smelling powdered chocolate I get from this. Might just be my nose.
Yeah, it's clever but it's not pleasant to me. My Dad sometimes wears this, which I found hysterical, but it smells better on him than on me, so maybe it's a skin thing. I don't mind the tar note on it's own, but mixed with the coffee and chocolate, it gets a bit acrid.

The bottle is cool, but pretty ugly. Two sprays lasts forever and everyone knows you're wearing it. Too rich for my blood.

I have no idea who would want to smell like this. As much as I like the smell of chicken soup, I do not wish to smell like a bowl of it. Maybe I just don't "get" gourmands.

If you went to the mall and sprayed this and made your decision in 5 minutes, you probably wouldn't like it. It is of course super sweet when you first spray it, and you'll think god I smell like a candy store or something. But after an hour or so, it is delicious and lasts sooo long. This is a "one spray, all day" scent. 12hr+ . One spray will not be too much, even in summer, in fact I like it in summer cuz it does last through a long hot day and still smells good. Could it be a bit feminine? yeah, I could see my mom wearing this... you could argue it doesn't really smell like cologne... I could see someone saying they wouldn't want their body smelling like this.. like Polo Double Black, smells like nag champa incense, which smells great, but in a dorm room not on my body... I still like this and wear it, plus alot of people don't like it.... please keep hating it so less people wear it...

Its my favorite from my wardrobe. I wear it at work whenever i want to be energized (the chocolate notes makes my senses alive). I wear it during weekends when all i have to do all day is to cuddle with teh wife. I wear it on nights you want to be naughty :D I wear it during clubbings when everyone in the club is wearing ADG or Isseyl :)
A unique frag that shows all the notes from top to base notes. I never get tired of smelling this on my skin. I also last all day on my skin until i get an evening shower.

Use it sparingly though, you don't want offending others when putting on too much :)

Aromatherapy? Aromatorture. Not part of the "cult." This is for me gourmand minus much real comfort with a clear option for the presentational. Here's the chocolate, here's the coffee, maybe some mint and the old standby of lavander to lift your spirits? Did you catch the patchouli? Like coming down from a sugar high, ultimately "brooding," depressing.

Ummm....no. This is just wrong for a straight man. Much too sweet and feminine--nauseatingly so, actually. Prefer the more masculine B*Men.

I can now see the uniqueness of this juice.

The strong sweet opening, the gourmand accords, and the dry-down that lasts all day.

Heaven in a bottle. After a year of delving into niche releases I've come full circle and I can really appreciate the magic here, frikkin' awesome!

It still smells a little too synthetic for my liking but it's probably one of the better chocolate scents currently available on the market. Luckily, the tar notes do subside to reveal a smooth and rich combination of woods, patchouli and coffee.

Not bad!

As masculine as M7, as mature as Curve, as elegant as Axe, as subtle as Platinum Egoiste, as natural as Versace Dreamer. H*ll! Layer it with Le Male for a chemical meltdown. So intricately nuanced only praetorian noses can appreciate its delicacies. The Lolitas will flock to you, skip Rochas Man and go for broke! Oh Yumsters! Yumsters! Yumsters!

It's like being a muscle bound steroid grotesque. You will be noticed and some percentage of the population will find you irresistible. Given that, I see no need to caution against over spraying.

There’s little doubt that this is one of the most important men’s fragrances of recent times. The chocolate note in A*men brought sweet gourmand into the masculine mainstream, and the coffee note and the creamy lavender in the top of A*Men’s pyramid were touches of brilliance. The caramel note didn’t hurt, either. These notes are done well with a natural feel to them. A*Men is a true gourmand and for the first time, a masculine gourmand fragrance became successful -- the public went for it big time. But the gourmand elements weren’t the only strong points. The middle and the base levels of A*men are as good as or better than the top gourmand accords. The middle level comes through as woody – patchouli and cedar – with very pleasant masculine accords, good sillage,, and very good longevity. The base is inspired; it’s one of the best bases of all the fragrances of recent years IMHO: it's warm, sweet, rich, in its partial gourmandness… coffee, tonka, musk, and styrax… good refinement, very good projection, excellent longevity. I suspect that many of the young wearers of A*men were likely experiencing something they hadn’t experienced before: a well made fragrance that the ladies loved and that stayed great smelling for hours. Its gourmandness doesn’t offer the kind of accords that I like to wear, but A*men is finely made, creative, and interesting. (Edit of the 10 January 2006 review. Changed from neutral.)

Oh Dear!..when i tested this i couldn't wait to get home and scrub...(yes scrub) it off.. and even then i could still smell the putrid stuff! It's hideously cheap smelling...sickly sweet ,like an old chocolate pudding left in the oven for 20 hours and you can't wait to open a window. It's as unsubtle as a lime green neon sign displaying the word 'unsubtle' in ten foot high letters. It's true...you love it or hate it. I HATE it!

This fragrance is not for the faint hearted who only stick to citrus based colognes because thats what everyone else wears. Don't get me wrong some citrusy colognes are nice but do tend to get boring (especially when girls figure out what your wearing, trick is to keep them guessing!).

Anyways the fragrance starts of with the bergamont, potuli and tar straightaway but you must let this subside (trust me it does after about 30mins). Then you really get to appreciate the fragrance which is a sweet, coffee bean smell mixed with vanilla and lavender. It smells like you walked in to a bakery. Nice. The drydown lasts for a while so do use with caution and apply a little.

I have recieved loads of comments on this fragrance, mostly positive but i dont wear it all the time and its definatley an autum/winter fragrance. It really is a love hate fragrance but i like to look at it like this:

Most men hate it... Most women love it.... and that works for me.

I'll echo some other reactions. Wow. Completely in it's own league. Its a love and hate. You almost want to do so at the same time. You really have to appreciate it for what is is. Its like candy meshed with tar. And yes it is really strong. Like lasts through a shower strong, so be careful. If a dark frag could ever smell crisp, Angel achieves it. The spaceship motive is a good marketing them for sure. Makes me want to try the "ice" version that I've been hearing about..

Interesting heavy scent. This is not a typical scent for fair blond types, but more a southern dark skin. I do not think this will go well in summer, moreover heavy rain in autumn or winter. It's spicy with a sweet touch and the so-called coffee bean is more like bruned wood. But it lasts. This is like Chanel no 5. Apply one day in advance, it will not wash off the day after and it is actually better the very next day. The spicy aim settles down

Can't stand this stuff, got a sample. Smells like you left the coffee pot on over night. Burnt coffee with some vanilla and chocolate thrown in. Overpowering and sickening sweetness.

I'm giving this a neutral not because I'm indifferent to it but because it has both strengths and weaknesses. The plus side is that it is a very unique gourmand scent that would work very well on certain types/personalities. On the other side, this may come across in a bad way to some people, which is not a good thing in office settings. Working in close proximity to others with this may nauseate them aswell.

As i am an owner of this frag, i think it's time to comment it.As it's name says "Angel"... You must understand the purpose of this cologne and what it's designed for. Some people says they like it simply fresh and how it smells on their skin after a bath or some sort of things like that...i think it's not a skin frag. , and it's more perhaps a leather/suit oil frag. Imagine yourself dressed in a white suit out to a private party , lighting your cigarette and then here it comes...Angel + smoke is like a chocolate cigar with so much character and style, it's true that the smell is edible, but in the same time it stays high class edible thing. I say....this perfume is for smokers, definitely for smokers. At least that's my opinion. So, anyone who comments about this cologne, without knowing what this is meant for, should better not to do it.I'm using this perfume for 3 years and never disappointed me. Definitely an occasionally cologne, not casual ! B*Men & Ice*Men are casual, i'm using them as casual colognes. I hear it was launched A*Men Pure Malt...please, if anyone has smell it and got a sample to describe this new entry on Basenotes.
Thank you & have a nice Frag-day

When I wore this for the first time, I loved every minute of it. I quickly grew to hate it, however, as its ridiculous sweetness made me feel really nauseous. It still does, to an extent, but I have found that when applied correctly, it can be calmed enough to avoid this. It's very strong, and will last 24 hours. I consider that to be a good thing, but it means you should definitely be careful applying this. It starts off dark and unpleasant. I find it to be a mixture of coffee and chocolate. I once walked by a coffee machine shortly after applying this, and the combination was just horrible. Over the course of several hours, it slowly develops into a lighter mix of vanilla/chocolate. I find this to be very nice sometimes, and overpowering at other times. It really depends on the situation with this one. I look forward to wearing it in the winter. I imagine that walking out in the snow around Christmastime with a lover while wearing this scent has got to be a beautiful thing. But until then, I'm not so sure about this.

Rare is the fragrance so repellent I can't wait to scrub it off my wrist. A Men is actually the first to have that distinction. Cat piss on cotton candy isn't a bad description but I was thinking more like frankincense mixed with baby powder. Sweet, with a strong incense note and a very unpleasant artificial something that smells like burning rubber. If I smelled this on a woman with whom I was in the throes of passion I could overlook it but on any other occasion, disgusting.

The first few hours reminded me of summer... Fresh air, tar, flowers, a synthetic smelling bath/shower-gel-time after a day out in the sun...yet enough hints of the warmer half of this fragrance. Lovely in my opinion, and in your face! The later drydown (wich lasts very very long on my skin) is much less intimidating, warmer as I said, and the synthetic touch (from the helonial I guess) depletes.

The fragrance notes written here I agree explains this fragrance a lot.

An clumsily constructed sugarfest, that offers the whole spectrum of confection from toasted vanilla, to cheap vanilla. Initially my wrist felt as if a vat of caramel had been dispensed on my arm, and this incredibly dense wall of all things sweet took hours to recede. It both astonishes and saddens me that this unwieldy, cloying mess should be lauded so often.

Believe me, I can understand why some people would consider this fragrance vulgar and repulsive. I offer no apologies. This is dark, unrelentingly synthetic, loud juice. I have on more than one occasion been asked by close friends to wash it off or leave the room.

It opens with a 118-octane patchouli petrol blast accented by lavender and mint. Of course, everything else in the pyramid - chocolate, coffee, etc. - seems to be fighting for survival. Pretty soon, you're tarring the roof of an Arizona headshop with melted dark Godiva while chugging Starbucks.

You know what, though? I love it. It's crude and crass and completely unruly for at least an hour. Some people won't have the stomach for the protracted opening salvo - after all, there are some fragrances that I will not tolerate for the time period required to transcend noxiousness - but it settles down nicely and lasts for days. It all relates to personal taste, as everyone else has said.

Everyone uses Rochas Man as a reference point, but they're totally different animals. If you liked RM but felt that it was way too sweet and milky, this may be the ticket. Just use sparingly, and only apply during the winter.

Retch. I feel like the Agent Smith in The Matrix: "It's the smell.... I feel saturated by it. I can taste its stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it!" I think the only thing I find more revolting is L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme.

I love gourmand scents. My winter daily wear scent is Rochas Man/Bond New Haarlem (they are just about interchangeable with a very slight nod to New Haarlem). To me, a fragrance should be suggestive--it should toy with those around you. If you find someone sniffing around looking for where that scent is coming from, you've hit the mark of everything a fragrance should be.

This stuff knocks everyone over the head and shanghais them to a bad place. There would be no question where the stink is coming from. To me, it doesn't improve all that much on die-down either. To those that said that after a week it grows on you... upon meeting someone new, who is going to take a week to sort out their nose. More likely snort out their nose....

I am kind of sorry I read all the reviews and bought the bottle because I was hoping to have an optional variation on a nice gourmand scent. Fortunately, I got a small bottle.

Patchouli? Where? I don't smell any patch. I didn't smell any chocolate in Borneo 1834. How funny.

Anyway.

Angel went terribly, horribly wrong on me but smells so intriguing in the vial that I kept trying to make it work. A*Men smells similar in the vial, but not in a good way, so I really wasn't excited to try it. Well, now that I've tried A*Men, I can safely pass on my Angel samp.
Angel is all red berries and bergamot on me, and A*Men is all chocolate. Of the perfumes I've tried stating chocolate as an accord, this is the only one that has delivered. It's fun, bittersweet, devils food cake chocolate, and I kind of like it! A*Men definitely won't go into my regular rotation, at least not any time soon, but I will hold on to this sample and wear it when I feel a chocolate craving coming on.

I wasnt going to write a review about Angel because there are so many already but then I forced myself. I have worn this fragrance off and on for the last 5 years and that is against my style of "buying a bottle and when its empty i move on". This is the best fragrance my nose has smellled! I have tried and tried to find a fragrance that would challenge this thought but NO, the rest fell short for some reason. Its a wonderful experience every time I wear this. 10 out of 10 for the complete brilliance of this fragrance, complexity, sillage, and longevity. Thank you Mr Mugler!

The top notes are unpleasant but the drydown was excellent and really long lasting. I was almost gonna buy one, good thing I asked for a strip sniff. I was actually looking for a vanilla base frag and had two choices: Obsession Night and this one.

All the glam of this scent died with my first impression, so I took the strip scent with me and then waited until nighttime. Somehow there is some similarity with Terre d´Hermes during the drydown. After a good 5 hours, indeed the base notes are sweet and very pleasant. Somewhat tobacco and vanilla.

Dark chocolate bar dipped in licorice and sprinkled with coffee beans. It is incredible, only takes one squirt and it lasts an eternity. Great for the colder seasons, can be worn for any occasion depending on your application. Not for me, I prefer the “tea” notes, but still deserves a thumbs up!

This fragrance would be perfect for me if not for the TAR note. First, I don't smoke and this cologne will give me an image of someone who is a regular smoker and heavy coffee drinker.lol.

After several cologne buys and trials, I realize that i love chocolate fragrances since it could blend well with my own chemistry. I also don't mind if I smell coffee as long as it is rich, bodied and fresh which so far I only find in A*men. The drydown patchouli is simply amazing, wow! and it lasts for a long time.

This one is enjoyable, until it's not. For me, that transition took place after about 5 minutes. It's not due to any development in the notes, either, as this seems to be the definition of linear to me. Because of it's commendable longevity, that meant another 11+ hours of.....not quite disgust (i.e. Givenchy Pi), not quite nausea, just annoyance. I wouldn't say that this is overly sweet, although it borders upon that, but I get that same "get this over with" feeling that I do with an overly sweet product. I view it as a novelty. Not like a rubic's cube, that can still be brought out 10 years later and be entertaining for 10 minutes. More like a pet rock. Seen it, done it, over it. I'll give this one to my son. (I do like the kid, don't get me wrong, maybe his girlfriend will like it, who knows?)

Angel Men is a love hate relationship for me. I can only wear it every now and then and when I do, I have to be extremely careful how much of it I apply. Its very strong, and because its one of those "you either like it or you hate it" type of frags, those who hate it will hate you even more for wearing to much of it. So I usually wear it between the shoulder blades and back of the neck.

In my experience, ladies love this scent more than men. Most guys find it really nauseating and separating. Sometimes I find myself really enjoying it and sometimes I can't wait for a shower. It depends on my mood and the occasion.

In the times where the sun is beating down, TRUST ME, it is a bad bad choice. I think this is an winter exclusive.

The lasting power is insane. I have smelt this on my skin the next day even after a shower. It's pungent stuff.

I give this a medium rating because I'm not crazy about it, but I'm not hateful of it either.

Strong scent on me, not usually a fan of strong scents.

Lasts 5-6hrs.

I originally was quite disgusted by the smell of this cologne but I gave it a second try and came to the realization that its not a warm weather scent on me.. in the heat I get a awful "tar" scent above everything else. In cool weather it wore very well it was quite strong for the first spray till almost an hour into wearing it .I didn't really get any of the listed initial scents from this cologne.. throughout it seemed to smell like a very dark coffee/chocolate/caramel. During the winter I wore this often as I enjoyed getting a bit of the scent.

Today i finally tested A*Men. I was so eager to smell it due to the amount of reviews that this perfume has gotten about being fresh, sweet and unique. Well this is what i have to say: In my opinion i do think this is an unique fragrance, however it didn't smell like candy to me not even chocolate nor coffee. To me it smelled like a strong manly scent along with a mixture of flowerish mature lady perfume and energetic mint. I just didn't liked it but i didn't hate the smell, it was ok. I think it smells great to go to a small hangout/party, college or work since it is very potent and trust me the paper sample still has the scent on it. If there is actually something i like about this fragrance is the fact that it is very strong and it conquers every other smell around it, still i wouldn't recommend it for a casual/formal activity due to the strong smell which might become irritating to some. My car still has the smell of A*Men on it, it is unbelievable. I also tried Rochas Man and although it was softer than this one it didn't had quite the uniqueness and it's scent was very subtle, it faded away very early. If you're truly searching for a garmound perfume with sweet candy, fruity, masculine smell i say try Lolita Lempicka, i think it is by far the best perfume i'ved ever smelled, but the smell tends to fade away from your skin quite fast (3-4h). Also you can try Diesel Fuel for Life but it's scent isn't very adequate for mature people since it is very fruity smelling making it more adequate for youngsters.

WOW, I definitely hopped on this boat late. I didnt even know what A*men was until last year..... I first smelled it, and was floored. I IS definitely different, in its own ballpark. Its sharp and metallic, but not too bad. I WOULD NOT wear this for evening wear, or any other 'white-collar', dinner, or 'dressing- nice' event. Its very young, and hip. To me, I think of it as the best 21-27 year old summer party fragrance. But most women, of all ages seem to like it. I wear it occasionally to work, and to parties. Those are about the only places t seems to 'work'.

I am not into sweet/sour(citrus) type of smell in general. A* Man struck me with a smell of pure sugar, a little burnt. It's so intense, thick, and "food" type of smell just not my cup of tea. I can't think of an occasion people wear this fragrance: certainly not at work, you don't want to offend people; not dine out since it may interfere with the smell of the food there. .....

Just say no.

Delicious. A sweet caramel/chocolate/vanilla masterpiece. First spray in the winter smells like bug spray; first spray in the summer smells like your face is in caramel. Definitely a cold weather fragrance. The bug spray smell wear off in a few minutes on my skin. Tones down to mellow chocolate/coffee smell that it absolutely amazing. Some people I know don't seem to like it though, so it's either a love or hate kind of thing. I love it.

wow!!! i first became a huge fan of cologne at the age of ten when my nana got me the coty men's fragrance collection for christmas.. i've probably gone through more bottles than many others twice my age, but this one is the best!!! from the opening blast to the drydown (which lasts and lasts lasts) this cologne matches my body chemistry perfectly. The sillage is amazing, and everywhere i go from the post office to the grocery store women constantly come up to me to ask what it is that i am wearing. a masterpiece

It's all about the choco-coffee and patchouli. (No, I didn't feel like typing in "mocha")

I have been on and off about A*Men for a very long time since I first purchased my bottle way back in high school, and guess what -- I'm back to likin' it and I'm close to finishing university. Yes, the bottle lasted all these years even after occasional use.

I was shocked when I first sprayed this. I was expecting Bmen's strength but with chocolate and patchouli. This stuff is nowhere near as strong as pple make it out to be, unless I got a defective bottle. It smells great and my girlfriend loves it. Amen last a decent amount of time on me nothing like Bmen though, and its not cloying, and does not give me headaches. I'm glad I picked this one up and I think pple just give this bad reviews cause its so popular.

This one was okay when I put it on, but it was really starting to get to me by the end of the day. Too sweet/tobacco/chocolate/caramel-ly for me. I can see why it would appeal to others - not my thing though.

New to Basenotes I was intriqued by how much A*Men polarized opinion and so I did something I rarely do, I bought it blind.

As soon as it arrived this morning I sprayed it twice on my neck with one little one on each wrist - I'd read that this is a fragrance best used with restraint.
I got the chocolate and caramel thing straightaway - it's very warm and it certainly stands out from most of the other stuff that's on the market for men - don't we get a little fed-up with smelling of Le Male or something citrus based? I didn't find this as strong as some - it surrounded me nicely but I don't think it was sickly or offensive to anyone out and about - I'll apply a lot of more of this when I next go into work and report back! When it mellows it's still very warm but some notes come surface to keep it from being too sickly. It reminds every so slightly of a stronger, more sophisticated Baby Blue Jeans. It's not exactly fresh but it's not too cloying either, at least I didn't think so but then I usually drown myself in Antaeus. A*Men brings back lots of nice smells from childhood and adds a very naughty veneer! This is a seduction scent. I loved the way it followed me around (subtly) throughout the day and I just felt good and sexy when wearing it. This could be the start of something.

I think enough has been said about this one that I can keep this review short. The scent pyramid on BN actually describes A-Men really well. My 2 cents here is that although I loooved A-men the first few hours I was wearing it, the last few hours were fragrance hell. Although I love patchouli, the patchouli in A-Men smells kind of "arm-pitty." Unfortunately the dry-down was all arm-pitty patchouli which became really unbearable and the potency of it all gave me a headache and made me nauseous. This is powerful stuff - even after washing it off my wrists, I still smelled like A-Men 24 hours later. (Ironically, I hate it when a fragrance lasts too long). Overall, I'll pass on A-men. Nice idea for a fragrance though.

6.5/10

I'm new here, this is my first review of a cologne so please bear with me!

I love this stuff. I wore it exclusively last Xmas and it reminds me of this time of year.

This is one of the only colognes I have tried where I can detect the individual notes! They come and go and I find it very comforting to wear.

Many colognes I have tried recently have not impressed. Givenchy Gentleman just smells like Pachouli to me, I cannot really pick out anything else. I like Pachouli, but when you spend money on cologne you want something a bit more complex!

People who think this is sweet are way off - I find it quite the opposite! Bitter (not in a bad way) coffee and dark chocolate, mint, lavender, I get all of these notes and more!

This is one I wear for my benefit, if others like it too then that's a bonus.

I'm off to order this year's bottle.

This is one of the worst fragrances i have ever tried. NO !! Wait !! This is the worst fragrance i have ever tried...
I tested it with my girlfriend on my right wrist.. Couple of minutes later, while my arm was at her shoulder, she said that she can't stand the smell so she moved to the left side of me.
I went to mall's bathroom, washed for like 10 minutes to get rid of the smell. But that is almost impossible, you need to take at least 2 showers,1 is not enough :) That was what i did when i came home.

As bbBD pointed in his review, this is a gourmand scent and must be served in restaurants not in fragrance stores. :) There is coffee, and burnt sugar very very overwhelming, then comes vanilla, wait this is not the end .... OMG! Did i just smell caramel also ???? The most overwheling and heavy notes in the fragrance industry have been used in this scent. If you do NOT want to walk like a food cart, stay out of this fragrance. It is a shame that i can only give one thumbs down for it. At least it deserves 5 of them.

My rating: 1/10

Sorry you A*Men lovers... for me it's a confusing, unwearable EdT.
So strong that I can't find the right amount to use - not use.
Althougt women fall for it on me - my inside also falls: ruins my liever, my stomach, my lungs...
The "oriental" spicy side turns on and on and me too...
With all respect for those who love it - I can't stand it, from begining to end.
Perhaps... could you - TM, I love your Cologne... - could you make it more wearable? Forget. It's my own chemestry, I'm sure.

Too good to be true.

What else I could tell you about this one...(?) Well, its my all time favourite designer fragrance along with Antaeus, and it will always remain in my Top 5.

Its strong and sweet, but it isn`t particularly feminine in a slightest bit. It lasts at least 16 hours. Both versions of the bottle are terrific. I prefer the metallic case, though.

Completely flawless, surreal blend of lavender, dark mint-chocolate, benzoin, coffee, patchouli and powdery tonka-beans. It smells absolutely amazing. It has a wonderful, slightly tarry and burnt edge to it which gives it that distinctive, masculine charachter.

I have never thought of myself an unhappy person when I`ve worn this.

I had a habbit of sampling my cousin perfumes whenever I visit him
I remember he had this cool A men bottle
I recall passengers coughing
thats when I discovered my faux pas
I was a kid then must have tipped half the bottle on my clothes
sweet and lasting
I have to buy it on my next scent shopping

My Review Title - A*Men is for Gourmand and Patchouli fans only! Stop Complaining otherwise!

With 190 reviews coming before me, I don't feel compelled to rehash the notes, etc. However I'll address the obvious love/hate nature of A*Men. Not many people are neutral on this. Obviously wearing A*Men requires that you like both strong gourmand and strong patchouli fragrances, as A*Men manages to meld the two genres together. You have a very strong patchouli - with all of its aromatic fullness - masked slightly by a chocolate/caramel/coffee/vanilla accord. However, even if you're inclined to like these types of accords, you CAN NOT overapply.

Application must be via a diffuse spray, and if you do want to lay it on, let a single layer dry then add another. If you put on a thick heavy layer something in the way AMen dries makes it powerfully sticky sweet. I only required about 1/2 of a 1.2ml factory sample sprayer to enjoy AMen all day. If I purchase this, it will be a 30ml bottle, because it would last me forever.

Applied correctly, I get varying notes of patchouli, lavender, the 'choco-cara-vanille' accord, and even some light touches of citrus and musk, that come and go, melding into one another. I can smell myself easily without someone else in the elevator smelling me, which is a perfect balance for me. In fact, AMen gives me of those 'aromatic auras' that few fragrances create and that I find very enjoyable.

In summary, for the brief time that my review is on the top of the page, let me me implore everyone who doesn't like both gourmand and patchouli fragrances to stay away from AMen. You will not like it, and then just get on BN and write a review whining that 'the perfumer was crazy - this stuff is terrible...waaaaaa!'. Please.

This is a very strong scent that lasts for ages. My skin seems to hold the middle notes, so when I wear this, I aways get (good) comments about how good my coffee smells, even when I don't have one with me!
Eventually it does settle to a combination of the vanilla with the coffee which is nice, but can be a bit overpowering, so a less-is-more approach is needed to wearing this.
Very similar to Angel, I got to the stage where I liked smelling it on women but not on myself, however I'm still holding onto the bottle just in case.

I'm mostly interested in how a fragrance works over a period of hours, and I don't care much (if at all) about top notes, unless they persist into the drydown. That said, there's something about this fragrance that is dynamic yet not "rough," which allows me to appreciate it for hours. I do only spray once, which is an issue because the spray mechanism is awful. You also may have trouble controlling what kind of application you get, because it doesn't always come out as a nice spray (rubber flask). That's the only "bad" thing I have to say about this fragrance. I'll guess that most negative reviews are due to excessive application, which would certainly be unpleasant for me. I'd rather have a fragrance that lasts a long time with one spray than one that lasts a long time with 4 or 5 sprays, due to the "bang for buck" element. All aficionados should at least sample this one.

as stated in official review, that is a love or hate fragrance. To be honest hate is not enough about my feelings. Get some sugar, turn on your owen, burn the sugar add some caramel than pour it on your self. That is A*Men

Let me preface this review with saying, I really tried to like this cologne. Unfortunately you need to "work to get the payoff" in a manner of speaking. Before you can walk through the well watered plains of Jordan, Its awful that one must bury their face into Granma's chest heavily laden with scents that are strong enough to wake the dead. People around you must suffer through that just to reach that moment of bliss. Mugler, if would get rid of grandma, I'd go out and buy a bottle today. I am a huge fan of Chocolate, Tonka, Bergamot, and Coffee, but grandma should stay at home and read a book for this one.

It’s hard for me to admit that I’m giving this a thumbs up, but I’ve decided to join the club. At first, I felt like I was spraying myself with some sort of liquefied browny mixture. This is still true to an extent, and I remain somewhat self-conscious when wearing it in public. You do, after all, smell like something to eat, and that still doesn’t feel particularly masculine to me. That said, it really is one of the most enjoyable smells I have ever come across. From beginning to end, it smells amazing and, oddly, comforting. For this reason, I’ll occasionally spray it when sitting around the house reading a good book. It gives me the same cozy feeling I get from being home for Christmas smelling the cookies bake in the effort.

On the other hand, God forbid I should ever take this to the club or wear it to the office.

After abundant word of mouth I decided to try it on my skin, leaving both me and my girl friend gagging for breath. Even after a long shower I could feel its sickly sweet stench crawling towards my nostrils. A week later and after several "how could you have not liked it" comments, I tried it again at a perfume outlet with similar results. This monstrosity should have been restricted by the Geneva conventions

I like this gourmand, especially the drydown. Great sillage and longevity. Not exactly coffee or chocolate, it conjures a warm feeling. I apply only 2 sprays when I wear this to work. I overapplied one time during work, and I had people sneezing around me. Value for money, because this 1.7 oz is going to last me a long time.

I love Angel Men! This is my "go get 'er" frag when I fancy a bit of skirt-chasing. The chocolate, vanilla, and peppermint notes are the most prominent on my skin. I thought it had a touch of cinnamon. In any case, the ladies in the 18-to-24 category seem to go wild over this one, especially while clubbing . While I did get a few complements from women in their 30s (and one gorgeous 44yr old), IMO this is a scent for the kittens; for cougars look elsewhere. Caveat: spray this DIRECTLY on skin and wait for the drydown before dressing because the scent will stick on your garments until you hit the cleaners.

this fragrance has to be the worst, honestly, the WORST i have ever tried.
I was thoughtless enough to try this one on my arm in the middle of the day without a chance to wash it off for hours.
It smells chemical, it smells sweet, it makes me nauseatous and gives me a giant headache, and, to finish it off i get thast typical urinal stone smell from time to time.
EOW!!!

There are some fragrances that delight and tease the olfactory senses, and then there are obnoxious, stomach-churning concoctions such as this fragrance. Whoever the mad scientist that created this is, he/she should have served some prison time.

This is one of the extremely few fragrances that I have ever smelled that initiated a nearly automatic gag reflex upon the first whiff. The biggest mistake was spraying it on myself. I happened to see two guys at Sephora talking to the SA. They both raved about this scent and she gave them a few samples of it. I was on my way out, but slowed down and she gave me 3 or 4 sample cards of it, too. As I was walking to my car, naive as I was, I gave one of the samples two good sprays on my forearm. I had to smell this sickly sweet, putrid odor until I got home, and then, even after a shower and nearly rubbing the skin off of my arm, I could still smell it. It smells like a terrorist blew up a candyshop and a Starbucks and this is the stuff raining down upon the poor innocent bystanders. Horrible stuff.

This is an extreme fragrance, perhaps one of the most provocative of them all. Coffee, chocolate, candy, tobacco .. all that and more. It will bother me to have someone around smelling like that.
This is not something to wear this is something you want to eat.

I HATE how popular this is. But, the review cannot be based on popularity...

so

This is fantastic stuff. All of these notes combine to make you a living chocolatey dessert. The power and sillage are top notch, so you don't have to splatter yourself. The only possible drawback is that this could bother people who don't like chocolate.

This is a must sample for everyone, if for nothing more than to appriciate the artistry.

I recently bought myself this frag and have to say that this the most strange perfume I've ever smelled. Smells like dark chocolate or like a birthday cake. The perfume is a little bit cloying when you overdose it so use it wisely. Girls love it, men say its interesting and "optimistic" fragrance. A*men is a very powerfull scent. When yesterday I sprayed myself behind the ears today when i opened my eyes i felt a quite noticeable smell and of course it was A*men. I recommend it for young, creative, sociable people. THUMBS UP!

Over-baked chocolate cake with a cheap cup of coffee.

Way too effeminate for me to consider: I cannot believe that this is a men's fragrance. It is quite a stretch. In fact I think it smells exactly like Chopard Wish, plus coffee. Even 90% of the notes, and how they are combined, are identical in both frags.

The only slightly masculine notes in this are tonka mean and benzoin. I hate the smell of caramel and coffee notes in frags, especially together. This is sickening really.

Over rated!!!! This cologne is like a cake with icing to be plastered on your body! Clearly too sweet. Clearly too simple. Get the taste of sweet desserts, mix generously, and you have this. Totally without sophistication. Sorry. any frangrance with only a two to one postive to negative ratio is dangerous. This fragrance is a waste of money and time. That is, unless you are starting Kindergarten......you will be quite popular ith both girls and boys!!!!

Not sure what the hype is about this one. I guess I'm one of the many who just don't like it. There is too much going on with it and my wife surely didn't like it on me.
Longevity and sillage is a plus, but since I didn't like the scent of the fragrance itself I obviously can't approve.
Thumbs down.

Reminded me of L'Artisan's Jour de Fete...in a bad way. This is another one of those gourmands that has an unfortunate sticky/unwashed character. Makes me think of dried chocolate ice cream smeared on the face of a small child at a birthday party. In my home, this one is called "Eau de Give That Kid a Bath". Dire.

I really, really wanted to like this one. The thought of a men's fragrance that smells like coffee, chocolate, caramel, etc was very enticing. I picked up a small sample spray bottle and brought it home for testing.

The opening spray is a synthetic nightmare! I can smell the chocolate, caramel, coffee, tar note.....or rather, I can smell the fake chemical versions of them.

I was hoping the dry-down would reveal something much more natural, and indeed it does (to some extent), however it takes 2 hours for that to happen. And even then, it still smells a bit too synthetic to pass as anything even remotely natural or edible.

Only one small spray of this stuff lasted hours and hours, with strong sillage. Even after scrubbing my arm with soap, I could still detect the scent of this fragrance. I couldn't imagine sharing a room with someone wearing more than 2 or 3 full sprays of this. And furthermore, what would you use to wash it off, turpentine?

Bottom line: The idea behind this fragrance is genius. The execution is quite bad.

I could not live without this. It is and has been for a few years "The One" fragrance I HAVE to have. I never grow tired of it. I can't stop smelling myself when I am wearing this. Use this once if you want to experience the true meaning of a fragrance. You will start to call most other fragrances 'toys' and this one 'the hero'. Two sprays in the morning that will never leave you until you go to sleep or four sprays in the night that will ensure a strong presence through the night. You could never go wrong with this one if you just range 1 to 4 sprays according to the environment.
The only thing you will not like will be that other men could use this too...

A*Men would be perfect if it not for that hideous tar note at the top of the heap when you smell it. It also takes for ever to get past it(4 hours at least). Other than that, I like it for clubbing in the fall and winter months. It truly brings about the sweet teeth in women who encounter it. Love it or hate it, a classic in the making.

A buddy of mine, a local night club owner, was telling me about A*men... he mentioned that he ran into a friend of his a few days prior to our conversation and she was telling him about how difficult it was to leave her boyfriend for the simple reason that she couldn't get over how amazing he smelled--he wore A*men. My buddy mentioned to me that he had a few other conversations over the years which revolved around the A*men awesome smell and that I might just have a little shred of hope with the ladies if I would just try it out.

Within minutes of receiving his email, and reading the reviews here on Basenotes, I was in Macy's to see what all of the hype was about... I was sold at first smell. It was simply amazing how so many different notes were present, some awful, like burnt tar, but as bad as the burnt tar is, it actually smells good when mixed with the other scents. After it had a minute to settle down, it was a really nice smell, as if I had just shaved and then the chocolate and vanilla came out to play for a while. Well, I'm not too fond of Vanilla... I think it was my highschool days of smelling Vanilla Fields on all of the young girls that gave Vanilla a bad name, but this Vanilla is different, it's really difficult for me to put into words, but I really don't mind it when mixed with all of the other notes.

I wasn't sure which bottle was the A*men, and the lady behind the counter didn't have a clue, so I ended up with what I now know to be A*men and B*men, which complements A*men nicely and I now mix the two.

The reactions from the ladies? Well, I've only worn it out on the town once, but I have worn it during my 9 to 5 and have noticed a difference in the amount of people willing to strike up a conversation with me, many more! In fact, I've met more people in the last two weeks than I have the entire year! People tend to move closer in to me and want to stick around for a while... I don't know, maybe it's a coincidence, but further studies will be held, rest assured. Oh, and that night I went to the club and wore A*men? I don't think I wore enough of it... I had been experimenting with how much to apply the few days leading up to the club night, but I don't think I had it right. Never-the-less, I did meet a lovely lady and we talked for hours.

I totally recommend this cologne... I can't wait to see what other shenanigans it gets me into, it should be fun!

ANGEL = Starbuck's for Men !

I like sweet and spicy fragrances, full of character, but i don't get this one.
Can't imagine anyone who would like to smell this way. If you want to smell like "Angel" you could rub your neck with chocolate and coffee just as well.
The only thing that i like about this one, is the idea to create something totally different.

Definitely in the love it or hate it category.

But i will give a Neutral thumb for idea and courage!

A*Men - its a classic. nothin else out there smells quite like it and could make you feel exclusive, rich, suave and most importantly, makes you feel good!

caramel? chocolate? vannilla? Tonka....if it brings you pictures of Rochas Man, then you are sadly mistaken. till date never been able to enjoy a scent the way i could Angel Men. its like reading a book, the notes keeps unfolding, morphing into each other with such precise manner that you will stop and you will sniff your wrist closely time to time to admire this beauty. its quite potent and last forever. Thumbs way up for this one. a Keeper.

The first time I wore this beast was truly a fearsome experience. I recalled correctly that the top note of A*Men almost fell me to the floor, and I was astounded because it was just ONE spray at my wrist. Few weeks later, due mainly to the fact that A*Men is the most reviewed perfume in Basenotes, I decided that I should revisit this cologne by buying a metal flask of 30ml.

It took me seven days in getting used to the smell of A*Men which started harshly before becoming to a terrific drydown. Yes, I was suffocated, tolerated, vomit induced, hardly breathed at the first few days of wearing A*Men; however, I began to appreciate every state of A*Men since then. This stuff has been my signature scent already!

For those who disgusts A*Men, I bet you could possibly turn out loving it after spending sometime with it (7 nights and days for me). It will be choking you at the very first time; then, you continue being stubborn, and you will find why half the world adore this scent.

I reserve this for night time activities like parties or clubbing where I will be surrounded by people with other fragrances on. While I have sampled nothing quite like this long-lasting, velvety, chocolate/coffee brew, my nose tires of it if I wear it too often. If you happen to be dating or married to a choc-o-holic, of course, it would be an excellent choice for an intimate evening.

i normally despise 'foody' smells, and i absolutely detest the women's 'Angel', so i was fully prepared to hate this - and yet i really don't. i definately have to agree that the initial assault that this provides is peculiar to say the least, maybe 'pinesol' as nthny said, i think it's almost absinthe-y in its vodka-alcohol driven herbal mint/lavender slap.
once this fades (which mercifully was quite quickly) i got full-on cocoa - not in a rich sickly chocolatey way, but in a dry, hot, bitter cocoa bean way - mixed with a coffee note that was more like an empty, dried-on espresso than the frappuccino described by other people here. perhaps its my skin chemistry (things rarely smell quite like they do on others when applied to myself) but this never became cloying-sweet, but remained hot-sweet-dry (i also really didnt get much, if any, vanilla), almost like standing near a candy-floss (cotton candy) machine, and there was a definate smoky edge to it (the 'tar' note perhaps?). the patchouli is the main prominent note to my nose, beyond the espresso-cocoa accord, and this weird-sounding combination is really quite lovely (although i do love patchouli, and i do love coffee houses!). the dry-down for me retained the patchouli, joined very nicely by the musk and the tonka, and only after several hours did the caramel sweetness become apparent.

this stuff is really WEIRD. i couldnt quite get my head around smelling like cocoa powder and old espresso and patchouli, like some kind of fat hippy. but i really and truly like it. will definately buy when i see it going cheap (i think i saw some for £35 for 100ml online!)

Tried it at the shop (on my hand, not paper). I like sweet scents but this just smells like cotton candy to me. I think I'd have liked a citrus/melon note to balance that sweetness. It smells very edible (I'm not kidding).

This really stands out as something completely different though it shares components (coffee vanilla chocolate tonka bean) with so many other gormand offerings. It is daring and never ceases to garner compliments. The initial blast is very confusing, I'll give you that (for a second I almost smell pinesol probably due to the lavender/mint combo) but those initial notes dry down quickly to reveal a warm rich fragrance that is very intimate. I can't imagine not having it in my collection simply as an alternative to the norm and because it deserves to be part of any collector's stash. Does NOT combine well with the saltiness of sweat so it does NOT work on warm days or in a steamy club situation but rather a crisp fall or winter sweater day or cafe night, for walking through the city with a Starbucks in hand in the cold. I generally am a fan of finely crafted, unique fragrances, and this may be rather pedestrian in that regard. But for the 100% unique warmth it conjurs, it is definitely a worthy fragrance.

I first bought A*MEN in 2000 as I had fallen in love with the fragrance. I thought it was original and different compared to other same-smelling mainstream fragrances. And it was my first designer fragrance. I remained faithful to this one for about 3.5 years, and then decided to kiss it goodbye and move on to something else. I still have a little bit left and the othe other day, just for the heck of it, I sprayed a few drops on my neck before going to bed. I shouldn´t have because I had problems falling asleep, thinking "I used to love this one?!?". I don´t know, it just seemed overpowering, too ruthlessly present. I can understand why people either love it or hate it- but to me, this controversial reception is an essential property any well-made fragrance should possess. I probably won´t return to it, but it does bring back a lot of fragrant (and other) memories...

Can't really dislike how it smells, it's kinda chocolate, kinda coffee, kind of caramel. So basically its a caramel, mocha, frappachino. It smells delicious, but I just don't know if I want to smell like it. What I can say I dislike about this fragrance is how cloying it is. It just attacks your nose and fills it up with smell. Made me dizzy.

--Ice cream shop.--
Is the proper way to describe it. If you want to smell like chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, caramel and other delicious chillygoodies, this is the scent for you. It is powerful and projecting. Be warned if you wear it though. If you come across a hungry ice cream addict while wearing this, they might be tempted to take a bite.

This is a perfect sent for teens, going out to parties. The girlies will love it. :) Also, don't wear this if you use public transportation. ;)

This must be the worst fragrance I have ever had the misfortune of smelling and men wear it as if they came off an assembly line. To be stuck on a crowded subway near someone who has on this loud, cloying, nauseating fragrance is an experience that makes the eyes tear. The womens version is almost as bad. Rochas Man, with similar notes, was made SO much better and doesn't make the eyes burn or make you wish to run for fresh air as does Angel. I hear people say "oh it depends on how much you spray and so on. . ." I say you can't make something that smells bad smell good. That's just my humble opinion. Peace to all Angel fans around the world.

My first contact with this one wasn’t so good… to be honest, it made me sick.
Some years later and after some hundreds of others scents my nose was finally ready for A*Men and… I loved it… I loved it very much.
Sometimes, when I splash some A*Men on my arm I smell it pretty piggish and I enjoy as much as Homer Simpson when he eats chocolate and he says: ”Mmmmm… sweeeeet”. Vanilla, caramel, chocolate… is there any sweet thing we know which isn’t in this scent?
A*Men is very long lasting and super aggressive. If you like when the whole room smells like you than you should use Opium pour Homme, but if you have a huge desire that the entire building smells like you, than you should undoubtedly apply this one.
I just couldn’t imagine A*Men on some mature man. Thanks God, despite my age (I’m 35 years old), I’m not so mature;-)

Yes, believe the hype. It is really THAT good. Sweet, sweet, sweet. Beautiful scent. I was anxious to try this gem so I went to theperfumeshop and the sales assistant who had sour breath sprayed it on my wrist. With this initially unpleasant experience I sniffed and dismissed A*Men as just a run of the mill fragrance. Luckily the weather brightened up and it got really hot. Worse still, I got into a stuffy bus. Here's where the magic began. The chocolate heavy scent began to project like nothing I have come across before. It was absolutely insane! I fel in love! Off that one spray, I was encompassed in a fresh but light chocolate cloud. People moved ever so closer. Whether this was because of A*Men or my rugged good looks ( he he), I will never know.

The top notes are awful, it's more like a stanch than a perfume. But as it settles down, the mid and base notes are pretty nice and warm. It's sweet (like all the gourmands) but not necessarily cloying. If you can hide for 10 or 15 minutes after you've sprayed it, then it's ok to wear this in public.

Its isnt for everyone, if you think you can pull it off go for it. Its a bit on a "feminine" side so keep this in mind when your buying it. If you can pull it off and it actually suits you, then congrats you've just brought one of the best. its smells like a bakery which would be a instant turn off or on for people.

this is the most wonderful fragrance when it's dried down, but, before you go out and buy it, you should know that it will smell like cotton candy and bengay for the first 2 hours before it settles down. but when it does, its smells like a piece of heaven.

This is distincive fragrance and is sure to get compliments, although very powerful; too much and you will smell sickly sweet. Overall, it is clear why this is rated so highly.

I only tried a sample vial of A*Men, but this scent is fantastic. It reminds me of christmas by the fire, with hot chocolate. It smells very edible, very dark and chocolatey to me. I spray on each wrist once, and on each side of my neck. I can always smell it, but people have to get closer to actually experience its greatness. My nose can sense it for atleast a good 8 hrs. My 1.7 oz. bottle is on the way NOW!!

I enjoy my bottle of Youth Dew Amber Nude since it makes me smell yummy so I decided my husband needed to smell yummy too. Because of Basenotes advanced search I was able to find just what I was looking for for him.
YDAN has notes of patchouli and chocolate which I just love so using the advance search I put those notes in to see what was available in men's colognes and A*Men came up. My daughter and I then went to the mall to check it out. We decided we liked it and bought some and brought it home. I unfortunately made the mistake of having my husband try it on right before we went to bed though and found it hard to fall asleep because the scent made me hungry.
This is a dangerous cologne - do not wear around women you do not want licking you like your mother or aunts. My husband will from this day on have a bottle of this along with a list of rules as to where and when he can wear it!

Longevity is unreal with this juice, but only wear it when the temperature is a maximum of 50 degrees. Warm weather makes Amen become way over powering.

horrible horrible horrible. I had to wash it off immediately, I don't actually mind the coffee/chocolate opening but the sugared almond/baby powder basenotes are very cloying. I'm not sure if I'm brave enough for this one!

I'm hooked. At first, when I smelled it on the card I dismissed it as far too sweet with an almost flat quality to it. Well, when I finally gave it a go and sprayed it on my wrist, I couldn't stop sniffing it. I don't like standard fragrance, and this definitely isn't standard by any means. It's a very warm, with patchouli, bergamot, chocolate and vanilla, but it also has peppermint and lavender, which seems to tone down the overly sweet notes. When I wear it I get so many compliments from both women and men, plus you only need a small amount, and it's actually quite inexpensive when compared to other fragrances. What's not to love?

Strolling through the billowing snow, scarf around your neck, tuque on your head, breath completely visable, and the warm yet subtle scent of hot cocoa, mint, and coffee beans rising from your jacket. Delicious and comforting in the best possible way.

It has taken me some time to appreciate this gem, but appreciate it I do. I get none of the gasoline or syrupy crap scents from this one, but I also don't get the negative scents from Kouros and Farenheit either. A love it or hate it, certainly, and love it I do.

Awesome stuff when you want to be noticed! Though, I don't think its that outrageous as some make it seem. Its out there, but 'works' very, very well.
Thumbs up. I will always have a bottle of this!

After having bought it four years ago, A*Men bored me quite quickly: the topnotes were good, interesting, powerful but the base was just too much caramel. My mother said I smelt like caramel and nothing else. Not exactly a compliment. Then a few months ago I began wearing it again and each and every time it attracts lots of compliments from the ladies. Don't most of them just love sweetness... Now I often go for it in chilly weather on days I won't be going to gym late afternoon, because then it is just too much. A Caramel Classic, that sums it up for me.

A warm visit to the candy shop.

Literally, this fragrance has the intoxicating qualities of some of the most addictive edible sweets out there, which is not bad, but it tends to be a bit overpowering for the ones with sensitive noses. Thankfully, most girls love the sweets offered in this concoction and immediately notice the chocolate, caramel and vanilla in the drydown and positive comments pour in from all sides. Now the similarities with women's Angel are unmistakable, in fact my girlfriend has threatened to use my bottle on several occasions, but there is enough substance in the mid notes to bring some manliness to the mix, not much mind you, but just enough.

My biggest problem with this fragrance is the coffee. It does not really need to be there. It does not add any complexity and just caters to the noses of the Starbucks generation. Coffee has become a popular ingredient in the some of the new fragrances (Trussardi Inside Man, Polo Double Black, DKNY Be Delicious Men) I just hope the trend does not continue, isn’t it enough that the reek of coffee is in every aspect of society from the office to the restaurant and at home, now we must have a remainder of our need for caffeine by wearing its most pervasive aroma. Once upon a time a cup of coffee could conjure up wonderful memories, but now it is as common as car exhaust. No thanks, I’ll stick to tea, a flavor/aroma I find much less intrusive.

Overall, A*Men is well constructed and quite potent so don’t expect to shower with it and still retain your olfactory receptors. It is unique and long-lasting, which makes it very special indeed considering that it came out in the era of the aquatic invasion. Despite the coffee imposition, a definite thumbs up.

Never got much of a chance to use my sample from Mugler. Just attended a Daft Punk concert, which was basically like a big club and everyone was freakin on everyone. Normally I found A*Men overbearing. I shot a spray at my chest under my two shirts mid-concert just to see what would happen. By that time, I was covered in sweat(and not just my own ;D) and continuing to produce it. A*Men is golden for clubbing. I can't explain it any better than that. Even post-concert it smelled divine, and tamer than my previous experiences. I can't think of anything I would rather take clubbing.

I don't like to smell like food. I will readily wear semi-gourmands, like JPG Le Male, but I think I'll steer well clear of this.

It gives me a headache. I wouldn't drink coffee that tastes like this! And believe me, all I smell is French Vanilla Roast, burnt chocolate souffle and something that smells like a blend of creme carmel and edible baby powder...

If you want something that smells gourmand-ish and devilishly sexy, something that will get women asking what the wonderful cologne is that you're wearing, go for Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male.

Doing this will also save all small children and most mammals within a 20 metre radius from certain suffocation...lol

I'll add my opinion noe the less.
Smells too much like the women's version...my wife couldn't tell the difference, she thought I used her perfume.
But that is the point...women will almost literally eat you.
And the drydown is commendable.
I normally would have ranked this lower, but anything that makes my wife 'want' me more is good in my book.

When this arrived on the market, I must admit that I loved it. Considering that we still had cold winters here in Belgium that time... . I really don't think you should wear a fragrance like this during summertime.
The lasting power of this is too long, I don't like the drydown and it just stays too long. It's lik I want it to disappear, but it doesn't. Too bad that most drydowns are musky or heavy, I do believe that a fresh scent should stay fresh.
Back to A*men, I bought this one for my husband (as I said when we had winters over here) and I liked it. Allthough it could get too much and it would be a good smell to use in a chocolate store, too be in a small room amongst others,... not so good.

My first impression is of a perfume too strong and particular. I dislike it very much, i can't stand the strong way it smells and above all there's a prominent note that nearly disgust me (maybe patchouli?). After a couple of hours this prominent note became more subtle and mixes up whit other notes in an intriguing wat, yet it remains distinguishable. So the drydown it's better, but after all i can't wear a perfume that disgust me for the first two hours!!

Men's scents work better on my sister's skin, so I tested this one out on myself. That initial note is indeed a lot like cleaner-I suspect it's the lavender and peppermint together. Then it fades off very fast and I get a vanilla patchouli so dried down that it's a velvety, chocolate/sandalwood. Since I hate patchouli, this is a plus. It's lovely, warm and attractive. I would snuggle up to a man wearing this.

I am fairly new to the world of fragrances, and A*Men was my first blind buy. I was a bit nervous that it will come out disgusting, as some of the reviews here say; but I wanted a sweet fragrance, so I took my chances. When I got it, and sprayed a bit on the back of my hand, and smelled it, it was a real shock. The top notes are very sweet, and it is extremly powerful. But I actually liked it, it smelled very nice and unique. The base notes are also extraordinary with chocolate and coffee. Be careful not to overspray becaue it is incredibly strong and it lasts forever. This is a fragrance which some will find disgusting, but others will love it. I liked it, and recommend that you try it first, to see if you like it or not.

The initial impression is WHOA! too sweet and not wearable. Thankfully, as it dries down it becomes more tied to the basenotes and mellows to a nice blend of chocolate, coffee, caramel. The lavendar remains. It is not an everyday scent but has a place in the rotation.

At a perfumery in Venice I once talked to a salesman who held the fragrances of Creed in highest regards ("Green Irish Tweed is probably the best fragrance ever made") while bashing A*Men for its tasteless vulgarity ("This one is a mess."). I have to agree because I agree with his premises: From the viewpoint of "high perfumery" this one i s an olfactory monster that cannot be judged in comparison with fragrances from e.g. Creed and, most of all, Serge Lutens.

It has its own dignity. If one accepts wearing something utterly popular and mass appealing, one can grow to like this one. I turn to A*Men from time to time when I get bored by wearing my other scents (which doesn't happen all that often), when I don't feel strong enough to put on something more superior (like any of the Serge Lutens'). And then the gourmand aspect of A*Men seems to me a revelation. It's always new to me. But I usually go through the same development: Initial joy vanishes and then comes this not to chase away feeling: Guy, you have put on something which protects you from being taken serious. It's true: A*Men is a "fun" fragrance, but not one you could wear to make a statement other than that you are a clown.

Therefore I have had "olfactory success" with women. Many contemporary women tend to like the clown aspect of a man, because it makes controlling him easier. Many fear self-conscious men that are wearing something brutally regardless of what others think. A*Men, applied lightly, might make you a conquerer: But be aware that your conquest is rotten from the beginning!A*Men is the ultimate fragrance of self-deceit.

Working as an Angel/A*men Ambassador some years ago, I grew to fully appreciate this milestone male scent.
A*men is undisputedly a love/hate fragrance - however I would strongly recommend sceptics revisit this modern classic.
With notes such as 'burning rubber tyres' and 'roasted coffee', - its not one for blokey-blokes to shy away from just because of its gourmand tonalities. A*men offers quirkyness and a big set of bollocks to any man's fragrance wardrobe. It thus needs to be treated with respect... the old cliché of womens perfume applies here: spray a generous cloud and step into it - just as was intended when A*men was created. Avoid direct application to the skin - especially in warmer climes!
Though perhaps not appropriate for any and every occasion - A*men deserves its place amongst any serious perfume enthusiast's faves.

A few weeks ago i went to a parfume shop and tried this one on my wrist. I thought it was disgusting. So i bought another one and went home.
At home my girlfriend told me that my perfume smelled super. I hadn't used my new one and remembered that i had tried the Angel Men. And it really smelled very fine after that time. The next day i bought it.
This one is incredible, and most women seem to like it.
The problem is, that the top-notes are so intensive that i get a headache from it. So i only take one pump.

Love it or hate it, I suppose. I fall firmly in the latter category. Icky sweet to a fault, and I don't have that much of a sweet tooth to begin with. Unbalanced to my nose, with all other notes overwhelmed by the chocolate/vanilla ice cream accord. Blech.

I love this cologne and everything about it! It smells kind of wierd on paper but on my skin it smells amazing, it's so soft and sweet just like a Angel! I didn't buy it right away because I just bought 3 colognes that same day and was short on money. I'm planning on getting the 1.7oz rubberflask for $50 at Nordstrom.

This is one of those that one day I will love and then the next I'll hate. I love how this smells after a few hours, it is an amazing gourmand. I do however occasionally dislike the top notes, I find them a bit of a let down for something as great as Angel Men. Oh and for the record, the metal flask is not worth the extra money unless like me you're materialistic.

I'd say, don't believe the hype. Although this is a pretty nice Gourmand. It's strong, sweet and has a lot of character. But that singing tar note comes off as a synthetic mess to me. I'll wear the stuff from time to time, but I won't reach for it if you know what I mean.

I tested this today and was initially shocked - It's VERY unique. I am definitely buying this, however. The smell reminded me of incense and chocolate - that may sound strange but it works extremely well and lasts forever. I was walking in cold weather for a few hours well after I applied the fragrance and every now and then I smelt the rich fragrance on me - a reminder that it was still there...it's an excellent choice for cold weather and it just lasts and lasts. It's a daring scent for sure, but if you haven't tried it I urge you to. No matter what you'll be very surprised.

I like this stuff. It is dark and mysterious and compelling and good. It draws me in again and again with its complexity. That said, this is not "me" any more than is driving around in a Ferrari. A Men is something I can appreciate and admire but I just can't get comfortable with it: what am I trying to prove? If I want power that is closer to "me" I'll go for either Boucheron or Creed Tabarome.

Perhaps the most wonderful thing about fragrance is that it both creates and recalls memories. Unfortunately, some memories can be unpleasant.
I cannot be objective about Angel because I cannot smell it or even think about it without remembering the first time I (for lack of a better word) experienced it.
I was working at an editing house in Hollywood that specialized in "adult entertainment". One of the clients was a thoroughly loathsome person. The type who smoked cigars not because he enjoyed them, but because he thought he looked "cool" smoking them. The first time I met him, he arrived in a cloud of the strongest cologne I had ever smelled. You couldn't not comment on his "scent". "Don't you just love it!" he would say. "It's called Angel Men by this fabulous designer named Thierry Mugler!" A name dropper through and through. Then he would billow out some foul cigar smoke and the three (him, his Angel Men, and his cigar smoke) would compete for what little oxygen was left in the cramped office.
You could always tell when he was coming as his Angel cloud would arrive ten minutes before he did, and we were on the twelfth floor!
Several years passed and I attempted to reassess Angel Men for myself, but I couldn't divorce this person from the scent. Was it because of him I thought the scent was obnoxious, over the top, cloying, insincere, and trying way too hard to be amazing? Or was it just these things on it's own?
From other peoples comments I've read here, I have to conclude that it is indeed those things on it's own. Minus the cigar smoke top-note.
But, I will give credit where credit is due. Angel Men is an amazing creation. Absolutely an animal unto itself, albeit one that should be caged. A first of its kind that has created a whole new category of scents. Perhaps, an important fragrance in the history of fragrance. There are certain things about it that I admire, but as the old Paco ad says..."What is remembered is up to you."

It's the strongest gourmand I've ever smelt! It's not for everyone: very, very sweet and thick, even dark (due to the coffee). This one is great for clubbing and night events. Lasts for ages and has a lot of sillage.
For the beginners I'd recommend starting with Obsession, L'Instant, Rochas man and then, try this one!

A*Men is pretty popular. No doubt about it. Its also quite unpopular. No doubts about that too. And, its also a ground-breaking fragrance.

A*Men opens with a well-balanced, rich, slightly minty accord. Have a look at the top notes; bergamot, lavender, mint. Nice. The top and middle notes overlap, because almost immediately you can also smell some distant yet rich coffee notes. This blend of fresh and minty top notes with the rich coffee is excellent. It reminds me of Bond No. 9s' New Haarlem. So far so good. However, this is the mercurial A*Men. From here, the fragrance goes into overdrive. The shift from middle to basenotes brings a flacon-load of tonka, vanilla, caramel and chocolate notes. This is where A*men no doubt turns into the king of gourmands. Rich, sweet, and a total sillage monster. A holy grail, if this is the sort of thing you like. A skin hugging air sucking nightmare if you dont.

I dont think that highly of A*Men, but any fragrance which was able to carve out an entirely new category of fragrances deserves some respect. I dont like A*Men much, but I respect it for what it did for the fragrance industry. For me, if it had stopped evolving at the confluence of the top and middle notes, it would have been perfection. However, A*Men works well if sparingly sprayed on, and in cold weather. I dont hate it, I just dont like it much. I like its successor, B*Men, more. However I can understand the need to have both in the wardrobe.

I recently bought my bottle of Angel Men from a small fragrance store in the mall (after finding out Macys doesn't carry it). I saved money by getting the refill bottle which works just fine without the flashy rubber or metal cases. I went into the purchase knowing the reviews and the vibe it got from the Basenotes community and on first spray I was a little shocked - it really wasn't something to rave about. I tried airing out the slip of paper with the sample and sniffing it again and all I could smell was chocolate mixed with cotton candy.

Even though I didn't like the smell initially, I kept in mind the reviews and bought the bottle anyway. I had to go to a party later that day so after I took my shower I held the bottle away from me and sprayed about 3 times on my chest, arms, and neck. Initially the smell was very strong but after I put my clothes on and went out, I warmed up to it. It smelled delicious and the smell was exuding off me in a positive way. Usually, for my body, colognes don't really stay that long but it turns out that this is one heck of a long-laster. The girls went crazy and were constantly pulling me close to them just to smell me. I've never gotten that reaction from a cologne and this is one I'm sticking to.

The next morning it was still there! I had to scrub it off and then repply :)

It's a keeper - and the best part about it is it's no Acqua di Gio and I feel exclusive wearing it.

They say the Angel family of scents creates two camps: lovers and haters; yet I developed an ambivalence about the women's Angel and Angel Innocent (which I preferred to Angel). I was attracted and yet not enthralled. After reading about A*men's popularity, I bought a sample.

This is the best of the bunch. At the moment of application, there's a discordance, but in a few minutes I'm conveyed to a coffee shop with vintage wooden floors and tables. The coffee and chocolate don't announce their identities overtly, but are present within a semi-sweet and cozy atmosphere. The men's fragrance escapes the shrieking high-pitched and overly sweet notes of the other Angel products I've sampled. I'd declare the men's Angel to be wholly unisex, so my lady friends, give it try.

The perfect counterpart to Givenchy PI. While PI gives off a strong vanilla theme, A*Men gives off a strong chocolate theme which is a great contrast to Givenchy PI. In fact, I wonder if you sprayed them both on your skin how it would smell. It opens up with notes of Peppermint and Bergamot to give it a mint orange smell. With the sweet notes of chocolate in the background of the top notes, it sort of smells like a chocolate covered orange. This part of the fragrance did not really excited me and I knew what A*men is all about comes in the middle and heart notes. After about 15 minutes, the top notes disappear, and the scent becomes just chocolate. I get smells of caramel, chocolate, coffee bean, and a hint of musk. A*Men does have great longevity and sillage. I can respect A*men because of this and it unique smell but I find it hard to wear this cologne on a day to day basis. It’s only suitable on me for going to the club or nights out, which are not a lot. Other than that, I find that the smell of A*men is something I would not want people smelling on me. For a more useable chocolate scent, I would try Givenchy’s Very Irresistible. If you tend to like the smell of vanilla rather then chocolate and are looking for that smell in cologne, I suggest Givenchy’s PI. Overall, this is a very unique fragrance, but it is so unique that I am cannot wear it on a constant basis.

Yes, the ladies do love this one. It is just too sweet and cloying for my style. Women do think this is a masculine frag and they insist they can tell the diff. Perhaps this is proof of a woman's keener sense of smell but I dont care. For me to wear anything, I have to like it very much.

Have you ever walked by a trash bin on a hot summer afternoon? If you have then you've already experienced Angel Men by Thierry Mugler. It's hot trash, pun or no pun, I'll let you decide.

I first received Mugler's Angel Men on my tenth birthday and for a while made it my childhood signature in Europe, then again in my late-teens as A*Men here in the states, but as I got older and after years of both compliments and ridicule, I myself grew to dislike the formula and relegated it only for occasions when I needed to put on the dog. Then with my acquisition of Paco Rabanne's Black XS last year I was suddenly compelled to revisit this Mugler classic and found it to be one of (if not thee) most interesting fragrances I've ever worn.

Perfect for a child or a young man, as it translates it's notes into a world of "Petit Prince" whimsy. However, on an older man it creates a less harmonius effect, it tends to wear and overpower the man rather than permitting the wearer to live up to the magnificent scent.

WHen I first smelt this it was just a revalation! A beautiful scent. More feminine than most. Fruity, claen Vanilla. Women just had to comment on this scent. ALas it has for the past few years everybody else has twigged! Youll smell like just another "wannabee" now. Time to Move on WOW factor was 10 but now 2! Just too Common!

I like the idea of a chocolate/coffee fragrance in theory, but this is just not well done. It's sweet in a very sickly way and very offputting. No thanks.

After seeing all the controversy, I had to smell this for myself. I can see why this polarizes people - it's very strong, and the first blast is a shock. To me, the big blast of patchouli combined with the alcohol carrier was almost skunky.

This lasted for quite awhile, and then the feral sharpness began to balance with sweeter notes. After about 15 minutes, the sweetness began to predominate, and I began to like it. Finally, awhile later, I began to get the chocolate vibe. So to me, there were four discreet stages, and I really liked the final result. Every so often during the next few hours I'd get another nice waft, with yet more subtle differences.

It was a valuable lesson in testing something beyond the top notes; it's about the most complex drydown I've experienced. I like the complex chocolate character a whole lot. To me, the smells are palpably sexual.

When I first smelled it, I was one of the people that gagged. I hated it. I found it repulsive. But recently, as I found Basenotes, I opened my mind to all fragrances and decided to give A*men another try. I actually got a sample of it, without even asking from Nordstroms. Luckily I read Stuffman's comments. I did exactly what he said and held it way way back from my body and sprayed it, rather than saturating my arm up close. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! I fell madly in love with it. I cannot believe it, actually. I know crave it. It's one of my most favorite fragrances. So I had some kind of divine angelic intervention with this cologne. I never would have believed I could go from vile hatred to total love. So, I really can relate to everybody's feelings about this cologne. I have been in both camps. But, I don't relate to it as a gourmand, even. I just feel so amazing when I wear it, like no other scent I have ever experienced. No one is more surprised than I am.

Wow, this one has illicited a few negative reactions.
I actually find it very good on my skin, however, my skin is a freakish chemical laboratory which has weird chemical reactions with every fragrance I put on it....................
Just bear in mind that the same chemical which gives red wine it's character is the chemical responsible for smelly socks so peoples sensitivites to certain notes in any fragrance can provoke a negative association.

I find A Men very fascinating. I have a couple of Angel dupes which smell almost exactly like it, yet somehow they are all gourmand and girlie and sweet while A Men somehow manages to be very masculine or men's cologne-y. So yeah, A Men is the ultimate masculine gourmand, 100% masculine and 100% gourmand.
I definitely see why a lot of people would find it obnoxious, but I find it intriguing. It has a dry patchouli note, a slightly sharp/minty cologne/chypre note and a load of caramel, coffee and chocolate. Sweet, but definitely adult sweet since it's so dry and yes, almost burnt (which I really enjoy).
I put it on from a sample vial, not a spray, and I love it that way. Addictive and mouthwatering, yet the green chypre notes keep it from being nauseatingly gourmand. The balance is just like a masculine, strong version of my cheap drugstore Angel dupe (I think) "Love & Dreams: Blue Moon" - the same addictive, mouthwatering yet still fresh and green combo of chypre/herbs and gourmand notes.

A vile, execrable potion -- more akin to burning asphalt than eau de toilette. This bottled evil gives me migraines deluxe, and often does the same to those unfortunate souls around me who have to ingest its rancid fumes.

Try gasoline -- it's cheaper and smells far better.

Very interesting fragrance and definitely wearable when used moderately. 3-4 light sprays are plenty. You don´t want to over apply A*Men, ever. I suspect that a great deal of the people who find it repulsive, simply use too much of it.

chocolate + too much... chaotic. I found it repulsive the frist time, had an open mind the 2nd time I wore it...until I got grossed out. won't put it on again.

I don't like the plain chocolate amour de cocoa type scents, I am a fan of cdg spicy cocoa

but this stuff is awful. especially if you put it on then get stressed out it engenders suicical thoughts

NO, NO, NO, what a mistake.
Far too strong.
...And It smell like burnt caramel lavander (what a horrible idea to mix this one with gourmand smells)and incense.
I personally find it to much.
Very personal, very strange.
HORRID!!.
I wish Mugler create a version of angel original in a slightly masculine way.

Undoubtedly thumbs down!!!
This is a horrible, repulsive, vulgar, fragrance and one of the worst i have ever smelled.
I wouldn't recommend Angel/Amen. It's very heady, chaotic and synthetic.
Tar,coffee and chocolate is way too overpowering and destroy the rest of the scent.
This is an overhyped fragrance. Rochas Man which is in the same path as Angel is way better.

This one's in a league of its own. When worn correctly, its gourmand notes are truly sublime, and depending on how much you wear, sure to attract attention. There is a critical issue with this scent, however- the way you apply it determines whether it smells sublime or repulsive. If sprayed too close to the body in small, concentrated "patches," it tends to give off a burnt, putrid smell. If sprayed far away and allowed to cover a large area, the scent will be much more smooth and smell just truly fantastic. If you have a sample vial that doesn't spray, don't even bother- there's no way you can put it on right without spraying it. A little goes a long way, and the scent seems to last forever. Definately something worth checking out.

I'm sorry if i don't agree with what everone else says, but to me I think this smells like garbage, garbage in a nice bottle i'll give you, but garbage nonetheless. When i put it on my arm, I wanted to rip it off and slap the makers of this cologne with it.
Oh, so just in case it wasn't clear, I don't like it.

My 16 year old daughter, the Angel for women devotee, bought this for her boyfriend for Christmas.

Boyfriend loved the gift, and applied vast quantities immediately, bringing the merriment to a grinding halt. Somewhere in the neighborhood of six or eight sprays, I believe.

Heavy. Stifling. Cloying. Sickly sweet. It is apparently a permanent fragrance commitment, since it cannot be removed from human skin, so use with caution.

The Scent That Ruined Christmas.

The first time i tried this one on, i recalled some dark room when i was little where there were some woods stored and it was hot, the scent is not quite the same but it came close. The second time i tried it, i loved it! The dark chocolate (and i'll be more specific: 70% dark venezuelan chocolate!) and tobacco notes are very strong and i like that a lot. But i don't find it terribly sirupy nor incense-like. I bought it and i don't go crazy with the sprays but a little goes a long way. It's a very nice gourmand.

I liked it when it first came out. I can't stand it anymore! I don't find the smell of coffee, chocolote and vanilla sexy at all, especially on a man! This scent is totally effimate and girls find it a little, well, girly on a guy. Memorable just because people think that you just marinade yourself in a coffee and cotton candy bathe. They won't remember you because you smelled sexy. Stuffy, sickly sweet, and sinus blasting vile juice!

Everybody knows that different fragrances smell differently from person to person. But there is another factor I don't think is commented upon as often, but it's exemplified by A*men. And that's that some fragrances, though quite beautiful smelling, just aren't the kind of odour you want to carry around with you. I wore this when it first arrived, for a few years. I really do love the smell, but unfortunately, it doesn't cope well on my skin (ends up smelling like burnt cake or something) but more importantly, even at it's best, I just don't want to smell like that - not for more than 5 minutes anyway. Maybe it's something to do with its gourmand nature - after all there are many foods that smell gorgeous - for example, whose mouth doesn't water at the smell of roast lamb? - but would you really want to spray that behind your ears? Nevertheless, it is a revelation, I want to give it thumbs up, but I'm afraid I can't.

The first time I tried this, a very long time ago, I oversprayed and I thought it was sickening. Howver I gave it a second chance and it became one of my top 2 favorite smells. The initial smell is still a bit strong but it is really original, nothing like it. The drydown is simply a pleasure for the sense of smell. The caraml-chocolate-vanilla-lavender smell u get after 2-3 hours is simply amazing. Love it

From the multitude of reviews posted, this looks like it's mostly a "love-it-or-hate-it" fragrance, so I am happy to post a neutral review. This fragrance has some qualities I like: chocolate, patchouli, and musk, to name three. It also has some qualities I really do not like. It is very, very strong. I noticed someone mentioned using more than four sprays; Somewhere around one I am maxed out. This is (overly) potent stuff. Another quality that I do not like is that, at least on my skin, this one comes across extremely dark. There are no light or uplifting notes at all, which leads to a sense of swampiness. I tried to wear this during the day and it just didn't work. Still, even with these negatives, I feel that this is a bold and unique scent. Also, it was recommended to me by a woman I worked with. There seems to be something about women and chocolate... At any rate I am glad that Mugler took the risk in producing this, even if it's something that I would not wear very often.

This fragrance is absolutely awful. I've read over and over about how great this scent is and how women love it. Maybe some girls have a certain affinity for rotting manure covered in pepper and chocolate, but I woundn't touch this horrible excuse for a fragrance if Halle Berry told me to wear it.

Really nice. Lasts a long time and simmers into this chocolatie smoldering effect. For certain a fall/winter cologne. I find it not overpowering but there at the same time. Sprayed it on my wool peacoat and for the next couple days it was still there. Well worth the bucks for something that is this nice and last long. Awesome!

My sig scent for clubbing. I've worn it other times, and sorta felt like an asshole to be honest. If you wanna leave the club with a girl, this is the best choice. My first few times wearing this I was really embarassed because in someways it is a completely ridiculous scent, but a few girls later I'm totatally comfortable wearing it out. Like I said, you will feel stupid wearing this in a less vibrant atmosphere than a club because it is just so strong and sweet. The sillage is incredible. If you do full sprays close to your body, people will hate you.

You're kidding, right?! This has got to be some sort of sick joke - absolutely horrendous! It sucks the oxygen out of a room and practically brings people to their knees. Smells like ultra-sweet chocolate exhaust fumes, like what might happen if you poured cocoa powder into your car's heating system and sat inside with the heater running on full-blast and the windows all rolled up. Splendidly offensive! Aggressively wretched! If this one hasn't sent lots of people with scent or chocolate allergies to the emergency room, I'd be very, very, surprised.

Syrup like sweetness reeking far too synthetic for a presumably expensive designer fragrance. Somewhere in between sandalwood incense sticks combined with cinammon and ginger spiced candy. Some call it bold and trendy, but it smells immaturely playful and juvenile.

One squirt on the arm of A*Men was enough to give me that old feeling... the feeling of wanting to gnaw off my own arm (a feeling usually involving alcohol, sex, a really fat naked chick using my arm as a pillow and my need to escape before she wakes and remembers what I look like).
Perhaps it should be called "Scary Deja Vu".

I'm honestly a bit torn on this one. Applying it, letting it dry down, and periodically taking a deep whiff allows me to appreciate the complexity that some people rave about. As a practical matter, however, all those notes get dominated by the darn brownie. Chocolate, chocolate, and more sweet chocolate. It's great for a situation where you want people to smell you in a crowd (which is why it is considered ubiquitous for nightclubs), but I can't see using it as anything other than a niche fragrance. Buy a small bottle or a decant and use it when you are going to be grinding against sweaty girls. I might add that this was also what I wore on Christmas, but for the sweetness part and not the grinding against sweaty girls part.

Never liked this one when it first came out, and all this curiosity I had of how different the concept was to create this scent. I remember reading that they plugged into the computer words like "fun" and other words, and the computer would put out words that were associated by it. Cotton candy was one of them, and so this frag was born. It has a strong, sweet presence, and can easily be put off by some. I don't particularly enjoy this tar/patchouli combination in the scent, but once it mellows, it becomes this gentle synthetic vanillic frag that is rather fun, yet sexy.

I am not sure if this stinks.. or I love it. But it's very original and you WILL stand out when wearing it. The smell is not objectionable at all. It's simply strong and smells like mocha.. I have to say it's the most original scent I've smelled and I think women seem to love it. I noticed on the bottle the product is manufactured "for Thierry Mugler.." I wonder what mass-market company REALLY makes this stuff... I bet I would be disappointed to find out. I do recommend this, but it's most certainly a smell before you buy.. actually, you need to wear it for a few days before you buy.

I am new to this fragrance 'thing' and this is only my second review but I have to add my .02 worth about A*Man.

I am captivated by it and this is just the first day I've worn it! I bought it blind knowing it is one of if not the most controversial frag out there and I am so glad I did. I can't explain it nor can I identify the notes except for the vanilla and the chocolate but it's mesmerizing to me.

Some say it's too sweet or smells like vomit but it's like a first love to me so thanks to y'all that praised it and helped me to decide to order it!

I like this one very much. The secret to this scent lies in the sillage. Smelling it directly on the point of application will yield unsavory results. In the air it smells like bittersweet chocolate with a touch of coffee. When you smell it directly on your skin, it smells like earthy patchouli kind of like Demeter Dirt. Although it does trigger mixed reactions, it still remains my gourmand of choice.

A synthetic chocolate powerhouse that young women go nuts for especially in nightclubs. Starts off sweet like syrup mixed with cotton candy then dries down to a chocolate candy bar type smell. Excellent sillage and longevity however it's a bit 'brash'. For a more mature smell try Rochas Man, or the ultimate New Haarlem

I had once tried A*Men many years ago and I could not stand it. Few weeks ago, I gave it another shot. I did not like it the first time, but you have to be a little patient and persistent, and then it grows on you. As mentioned by other members, you have to try it a couple of times to see if you have the palate (yes, I mean the sense of taste!!) for it. My recommendation: try it atleast three different days, and if you start enjoying A*Men spend few days to get the right quantity to spray on (it will vary for each person's).
A*Men is a very complex fragrance and it is for people who exude confidence. A difinite hit with the ladies and you will get constant compliments from them.

Absolutely astonishing. It smells like a candy shop - in a good way :) Though, it should be never judged right after application. It is simply too strong. Spray it once, wait at least an hour, and only then decide whether you like it or not. Yes, it's a little bit feminine so not everybody will like, but it is definitely worth giving it a try. Especially that the price is quite affordable. Thumbs up!

When I first encountered Thierry Mugler fragrances I was a bit turned off. It's a complex scent and at first it smells a bit heavy, but the notes soften with your chemistry. The coffee and patchouli make the fragrance sexy, yet the lavender and mint is soothing and the caramel and chocolate are comforting and warming. I get nothing but compliments anytime I wear this fragrance, and yes I've been told that it smells like sex. Not a bad thing if I say so myself ;) This is one of my "holy trinity" of fragrances.

At first, I'd disliked A*Men. But over time, after experiencing several scents with edible notes (e.g. Rochas Man, Hanae Mori, etc.), I found this scent to be very potent and memorable. Powdery, chocolatey, deeply packed with incense, and long-lasting. It is an acquired-taste fragrance for sure. I would highly recommend getting the portable dispenser with the gazillion refill tubes...a great way to recharge the scent without bulging your pockets. :)

Honestly, A*men stunk when i first encountered it. I sprayed it on a sample card, took a whiff and was bombarded with a smell that i'd expect to find in a candy shop. Then I recieved a free sample and took a chance with it. Wore it to the office to see what response I'd get...lo and behold, the mundane candy like scent transformed into something extordinary - a unique scent that left me constantly sniffing my wrists and this particular female co workers couldn't pry her self off me for the rest of the day either (i hope it was more of my personality tho) Great scent!!!

For someone used to wearing the more popular light and marine male scents these days, A*Men can be a bit difficult to tame at first. It is very strong and doesn't wear off quickly - definitely spray in the air and walk through it, and only in hot spots to quicken the drydown. You want this stuff to dry down as quickly as possible. The initial mix of notes can wrinkle the nose, but dries down to what I'd call a dark vanilla. Whoever called the scent "brooding" used the perfect word. Women who have liked this on me have called it a very masculine and sexual scent, appropriate for romantic evenings or getting close. Another reviewer noted that A*Men should not be worn in professional or office settings. Authority figures or suit and tie positions could pull it off, as there is a certain aggressiveness to the scent.

In my opinion this is the BEST scent I've ever smelled in all my LIFE!! It's true, I can swear. It's seems to be a very rich mix of vanilla with those toffe candies and a little touch of an expensive European bitter chocolate. I know it seems to be a dessert, or kind of a sweet food, but you can trust me - it's really SEXY, girls just love this fragrance. Every time I use it, I go out with some girl. Some people, specially the rude (and the past man) think this scent is very "girlish" or very strong and sweet. Something about this is true: it's very sweet, so I don't feel confortable to put it on me in sunny or hot days. I prefer to use it at night, and in special ocasions. There are two others fragrances that can be mencioned here: Animale Animale by Parlux and Rochas Man by Rochas. These two scents have some points in common with A*Men - both are sweet and confortable also, but Animale Animale is more for old-agged, because (in my noise opinion) has some notes of tobacco and whisky, I've already used this one for work, because I think it's more for social wear. And Rochas Man is also good, not for fun, but to work also, because it's "lighter" than Angel for Men. I don't think I'm an Angel - so I'would like this scents had the name of "Devil" or "Demon" - because this fragrance has some mistery about sins in its foody notes. For sure it's aphrodisiac, and very APHRODISIAC!!!!

Angel Men is definitely one of those fragrances which leaps out at you right from the tester card. A clever ploy no doubt: With your olfaction wearied from sampling several fragrances in series, the appearance of Angel Men is like a sudden burst of light through the clouds.

Whatever its intended image as the superheroes EdT, at its heart Angel Men is a classic oriental fragrance: floral, powdery, and laced with vanilla. I wonder how different its reception would be if it were presented in a bulbous antique-style EdP bottle with gilt furnishings, rather than in monolithic chrome with its dramatic blue-black faceted star.

It opens with its oriental nature dominant, heady and floral, underlaid with the sweetness of powdered confectioners sugar. As it dries down into the first hour the once controversial gourmand note of chocolate begins to surface, as does the wood at the core of the fragrance, bringing new warmth. The mouthwatering confectionary union finds its final form deeper in chocolate and sweetened spices.

It is the least overtly “perfumey” of any fragrance I have used, and seems to meld into my skin and emanate from it naturally. It is certainly the most sensual fragrance I have owned – it’s scent draws you straight to the skin, and that is where it smells the most beautiful.

I think this is a great fragrance for the right person. I smelled it on a card in the store and thought it smelled great after a minute (the first 30 seconds seemed a bit "off"). Then tried it on myself and the same thing happened. However, a word of warning, in addition to being a love/hate fragrance, make sure it matches you. I know that while it smelled great, it didn't seem very "me" while I was wearing it, and I imagine it's similar for many people. Still a great fragrance overall though.

A*Men could very well be the most complex fragrance available to ordinary people in the world. With this in mind, the result is nothing short of flawless. There are so many facets to this classic that you can hardly count them. I haven't experienced a single one of it's drydowns to be quite the same yet. There is always some new nuance stepping up, be it another shade of the earthy patchouli, spicy lavender, burnt sugar, dark and bitter coffe or that weird but lovely tar-note. It is as brilliant as messy the pyramid may look. Whoever composed this is a genius, and the worldwide success and several awards (including the Basenotes ones) is the aknowledgement to this. The female version, with an even stronger emphasis on the patchouli, is equally great and instantly recognized on the women wearing it.

Mugler should forever be respected for launching something this daring and original this side of Acqua di Gio.

No collection is complete without this fragrance. Amen.

Smells like melted caramel spilt on the bedsheets of a cheap paris bordello.

Everytime I smell this in the shop I think it stinks; but then I read the comments here and thought I would try it on my skin. That was two hours ago - I think it is probably my new favourite EDT! I can't believe it! Don't judge it by the tester card!

Smells like a burning chocolate cake. The best thing I found about it was that it washes off with relative ease.

It's a good scent. But it's definitely too intense and overwhelming for some.

I am a fan of sweet scents. I own both Pi by Givenchy and Le Male by Jean Paul Gautlie and enjoy both scents very much. However, after wearing A Men for only thirty minutes I experienced strong discomfort of the stomach and found myself wanting to vomit. Perhaps this scent is an aquired taste, I may like it after I get used to the vomiting.

Wow, what can i say? This is my favorite gourmand of all time, a true pure gourmand. It's simply stunning, shocking and daring, the quality speaks for itself. An instant classic that will last for decades to come. It'll stop your chocolate cravings just like nicotine will stop your cigarette cravings. Sure some dont like it, but to each his own. Highly recommended!

Its unreal how the ingredients stated make up the composition which is angel .The longest lasting thing on the market since grey flannel ,but that was garbage, while this is heavenly.

I tend to love fragrances with tonka bean. There is some sort of aphrodesiac quality about it. Angel is unique in that it is the only prestige fragrance to get its oils from other products besides botanicals. It took ten years to develop Angel for women, and the time spent attests to the product's ingenuity and uniqueness. A very alluring scent to be used very sparingly (the oil content is huge). Takes a full hour to completely dry and will adapt to your skin tone. I've had nothing but compliments and the sweetness is usually very subtle on the skin. Forget what the blotter card smells like. A highly unique fragrance from a highly unique company.

When I first smelled this, I thought it was the worst perfume a man could wear. But after a couple of weeks it became my favourite scent to wear on special occasions. I love the chocolate and cotton-candy notes combined with a subtle freshness. And, as mentioned before by other users, the ladies simply love A*men. I can understand any man who finds this one "too much" or "girlish" but I do think that everyone who likes "le male" or other powdery fragrances should give it a try.

This is a very sexy scent when worn correctly...sadly the majority of men when wearing any fragrance put far too much on; use an after-shave as a scent or fragrance and judge how a fragrance smells after picking up the tester bottle and sniffing it...I mean, come on, do you really know whose nose was there before yours ?!?! haha
With this scent, less is more...or rather when used correctly. When not worn the right way, it is easy to see how people can come to the conclusion that it is sickly sweet and when worn correctly, the dimensions of this fragrance are free to develop into one of the sexiest fragrances ever. Try having a smell of the Deo-stick tester next time you stroll through your local retailer; when worn correctly, this clean refreshing smell can be clearly noticed when wearing the EDT.
One of the longest lasting EDTs I have come across, and probably the most comprehensive bath line for a male fragrance. - A true masterpiece.
Ohh, and I'm pretty sure that the "Gourmand" classification is reserved for the TM Universe...I don't think Michael Edwards PDM refers to any fragrance as a Gourmand.
A*MEN / AngelMEN is defiantly not a horizontal fragrance; but seriously, you should try it a few times properly before condemning it.

Ever wished that there was a scent that reminded you of a summer trip to your favorite amusement park? You know, the cotton candy, the chocolate, and the warmth? Well, I think Angel Men is that scent. One word of warning, though-a little goes a VERY long way. All in all, a great scent that I can't get enough of.

this is a scent that really starts going once its applied. So ignore what it smells like straight from the bottle. DARK - MYSTERIOIUS - BROODING. Lots of different notes make for an engaging scent. Definitely gets peoples attention - thats what you want afterall

NASTY! TERRIBLE!! THIS IS WHAT HELL MUST SMELL LIKE!! Overly sweet for a woman, let alone a man. If I want to offend someone's sensibilities, this is what I would wear. Scent is subjective, but I want to smell fresh and clean, not like a candy store that has had talcum powder poured on all of its melting wares!!! I would not spray this on my worst enemy. If there was an option for THREE thumbs down, I'd click on that option.
I have been brutally honest, but on a very, very serious note - do NOT wear this in a professional environment. Evokes too strong a response from people.

Burnt chocolate, caramel and bitter stale coffee all rolled into one. Rochas man is much, much better. It has many the same notes but blended together more succesfully. It's more refined than Angel. I do like the Metal container for the angel refill bottle. The fragrnace itself though is not worth the high price nor that good.

A*Men is simply superb, I love it just as much as I love Angel, I sometimes even LAYER these two (you can never have too much of a wonderful thing, eh?)
What I love most about A*Men is the cool-warm contrast: mint & lavender vs. roasted coffee, dark bittersweet chocolate & liquorice. It doesn't hurt, either that I get loads of compliments when I'm wearing it...

Sometimes I like to take a "risk" online and order fragrances which I've never tried before. A*Men has been the most successful such gamble that I've made so far, and has quickly become tied with Paloma Picasso's Minotaure (which has nothing in common with A*Men, I assure you) as my favourite fragrance. I had read numerous reviews of the fragrance both on UseNet and here on Basenotes, and I wanted to give it a try. So, I ordered the full 3.4 oz size in the massive metal flask before I ever smelled it.
WOW. This stuff is awesome. It's definitely an "edible" smelling fragrance. I don't think that it's too sweet; the sweetness that it exudes on my skin is definitely alluring. Does it actually smell like cotton candy and chocolate? In some wonderfully indefinable way, yes; it manages to smell like both. However, there's so much more to this fragrance. It is rich and alluring, highly sensual, "playful" without smelling cheap or cheesy, and HIGHLY addictive. Plus, on me, it lasts like crazy and it just makes me "feel good" about myself.
When my original order showed up, I took one whiff and I was hooked. In my experience, the chicks definitely dig it. Two different female co-workers gave me compliments on it right away. I wore it out to a female acquaintance's apartment, and even though there were other people there, she kept nuzzling my neck to smell it, grabbing my shirt collar to pull me towards her, and telling me that she wanted to spray A*Men all over her apartment so she could smell it all the time. She assured me that this was a very wise investment, and I wholeheartedly agreed. Other more recent experiences (heh heh) have strongly reinforced that opinion.
A*Men is wonderfully unusual. Although it's not for everybody, I personally think it's a masterpiece. I can't say enough great stuff about A*Men.

Did not like it at first sniff. So strong the first time I wore it, and though I received many compliments, I felt as though it was not for me.
Must be an acquired taste, as I love it after many wearings. Own the EDT now, and going to obtain a few more products in the line, which is extensive.
The bottle (rubber flask version) is unique. Quite nice to the touch, juice visible through the clear star in the center. The sprayer is very responsive, ask it for a litte juice and you get it, no dripping. When spraying large volumes from it, the sprayer delivers a steady mist, not a firehose stream.

I REALLY dislike Angel for Men. My brother told me he loved it so I went out on my search and was dismayed when I smelled it. It smelled almost identical to Animale Animale, which is 1/3 the price. I find the chocolate and uncommon licorice I guess notes in it stifling and thick, and when I go to work I can't take being near someone who is wearing this stuff. I hope Cologne by Mugler is nicer.

I read Basenotes reviews before I tried Angel Men. I love it. It's one of the most "soothing" scents I've ever worn. It is sweet, but also very, very warm, long lasting, and completely unique. You smell like you just stepped out of a clean shower...all day! It's great!

It reminds me of a chocolate bar that fell into a cup of latte and spilled all over some cotton candy...and "stuck" there and fermented for days! Sorry..but No A*Men for me:-(

A-Men is a very high quality scent but I don't like it in the slightest. It becomes overly sweet on my skin and turns into pure vanilla on the drydown. Angel for Women affects me similarly. When I first smell it on a woman I think it is the most wonderful fragrance imaginable but after a short time I find it annoying and finally quite irritating and nausea-inducing. But enough on my feedback - you need to try the fragrance on your OWN skin. It might work really well for you. Fragrance is funny like that. I work with a woman who applies perfume and the scent - any scent - is gone within ten minutes. Other women can apply the same fragrance and it smells beautiful all day. Skin chemistry, I guess.

Amen is the closest thing to an aphrodisiac that I have ever encountered. No Joke (read old basenotes posts about my experiences). I find it too sweet BUT every time(and I mean EVERY time) I wear it out I end up with a girl. ITS CRAZY!!! However, it smells different on me than ANYONE else I have ever smelled it on. On me its lavendery with a little vanilla/caramel scent. Mugler is very generous with samples so if you go to a sax5th or Bloomingdales ask for a sample and wear it for a week. Not for a day or two but for a week. Ironically, the ONLY girl I ever met who did not like it is the girl I've fallen for.
