okay okay i get it it... everyone thinks this smells like A*men... first wearing today... shocked because i thought it was gonna be a monster out of the bottle like thugler's... but it is actually pretty tame... i get barely a wink of bergamot, or any other citrus for that matter... right off the bat i get a very soft chocolate with a tiny hint of moss and an even smaller hint of patchouli (even though it's not in the notes it's there). after a good ten minutes the vanilla doesn't come barging in... in fact it doesn't even really come through the door it just kinda walks by and waves.... all in all this is pretty intoxicating... i absolutely love a*men but it has a time and a place and this is much more versatile in my opinion... i wouldn't even consider this to be a nighttime only fragrance, because it is so coy that i can't see anyone being put off by it... i'm going to wear it to work tomorrow and we'll see how that goes... 23 February 2009

A nice, straightforward gourmand. Not particularly dynamic on me, but good at what it does. The chocolate note really dominates, and it's braced by some very fresh notes that keep it from being overpowering. It's too bad the bergamot doesn't stick around longer, because I think the opening is probably the best part. As good or better than Angel, I think, but more cost-effective. The one thing I dislike about this is the bottle design, which looks like the bathroom of a very cheesy casino from the 1980s. 24 January 2009

This is wonderful. I love A*Men, but to me this is even better. You don't get the caramel smell out of this as you do it A*Men, and it isnt overy sweet. Chocolate is very noticeable, but it isn't as overpowering as A*Men. And best of all its fairly cheap. Would deffinetely reccomend this to fans of gourmand frags. 13 January 2009

I really enjoy this scent. It's consistent and through it's consistency smells good. I do note a bit of syntheticness to it, but nothing too terrible. I was pleasantly suprised when I first wore it after the first few minutes passed. The opening didn't impress me, but it develops nicely. 26 November 2008

This is a different one, different but I like it. Mugler has got nothing on this especially because this was made first (not to mention A*men smells like grandma - see my review). Sometimes its spicier than others, and other times those chocolate fingers rub me down. The trick with this one is how it is applied, if applied in close proximity there is a great deal more of spice and a burnt coffee beans, but if applied at a distance, a light mist - you've got great dark chocolate for days. One things for sure, it wears like a EdP. Two sprays on my neck lasts me a good 8 hours. (be careful it is easy to over apply). Very masculine, to me there are many more notes than what's listed, but I do agree with foetidus I can smell tobacco. 20 November 2008

A gourmand fougere. One of the best cheap ones to now now a days. It goes from top to bottom without breaking away and does so for a long time on me (4-6 hours). I'd say it's good for even a warm summer night out. 11 July 2008

How isn't this more popular, this smells wonderful from beginning to end. This definitely knocks A*Men out wish I would've discovered this sooner, a great sleeper that I will be using regularly. 06 July 2008

This is solid, and I'd say Foetidus' review is right on the money. However, AA is not only linear, but it stays at the same level of intensity for hours, which some may like and some may not. I like A*Men better, because it is more intense at the start, then in about two hours you get nice, gentle wafts (assuming you only use one or two sprays, as I do). This is important for me because the chocolate smell can become irritating after a while if it's too strong. It may be that AA gets a bit weaker too with the chocolate after a while, but because you don't get the A*Men blast at the beginning, you don't notice the drop off in strength as much as you do with A*Men. Still, AA can usually be found at about half the price (if not better), so if you don't mind this difference that I described (or prefer the smoother ride of AA), I'd say go for AA instead. 25 May 2008

Smells pretty much the same as Amen for men - horrible - but much less expensive so if you for some reason like the smell of Angel buy this and go ahead and save money. 19 May 2008

this fragrance is great! it is a cross between rochas man and abercombie woods. This one is definitely in my top 5 right now. At first spray I thought it was just another cheap cologne but it is a very pleasant scent after the first few minutes. I will definitely buy another bottle when this one is gone. 09 May 2008

A must have for the A*men lovers! It follows the same track, but while A*men has a chocolate/coffee mix, Animale is caramel(ey) and fruity (maybe a reminiscence of the original Animale fougere character). A hidden gem! 14 July 2007

Ummm... Chocolate and citrus and lavender and bergamot and even a shot of pineapple: the opening of Animale Animale is wonderfully gourmand in an almost spontaneous sort of way. I can feel the originality of this one: Rather than the “Let’s make another gourmand scent,” that all the other gourmands seem to smell like, here we have a “Wow, isn’t it fun to put a chocolate note in the opening.” It overflows with beginnings of creative experimentation. Serendipity! That’s what I smell in Animale Animale — serendipity. It’s an enticing aroma dominated by the chocolate but supported by a good background of spices, florals, patchouli, tobacco, cedar, musk, and vanilla. I find it basically linear, and it’s a strong scent that requires discretion in application. It has quite good longevity and a very reasonable price 18 January 2007

Better than Amen and much less expensive without that cloying sweetness that Amen is renowned for. This is the type of scent you will love or hate depending on your opinion of gourmands in general. I find it unique and pleasant if not oversprayed. Don't purchase this blind. 12 October 2006

This perfume is a chocolate fruity scent and perfect for night. It remembers a lot Blv Notte. 05 August 2006

For me Animale Animale lies somewhere between the sweetish woods and astringent patchouli of Héritage de Guerlain and the pronounced richness of Mugler's A*Men. Chocolate is the standout note, to be sure, but it never overpowers the piquant base that remains after the chocolate has faded. It's complex and unusual, which will make it a treasure for some and utterly unappealing to others. 30 May 2006

A lot of reviewers cite this fragrance as a better option than the famed A*Men, but I don't think so in the least. Animale Animale smells spicier and heavier, without half the pizzazz of A*Men. They both possess similar chocolate notes and gourmand sweetness, but if A*Men were an orchestra, then Animale Animale would be elevator music. It's not really a bad scent, it just doesn't offer anything to me that I havn't already found in superior gourmand fragrances. Wonderfully creative and sexy bottle design though. 06 May 2006

Better than A*Men. Yes, A*Men is great, but Animale Animale is a lighter, smoother, creamier chocolate whereas A*Men is a darker, richer, sharper chocolate. In that sense, Animale Animale is to A*Men what Bryant Gumbel is to Al Roker. 14 April 2006

I much prefer this one to A*men, and not just because it's the original. Whereas I don't see much depth beyond chocolate in A*men, I can clearly pick up the moss and woods notes here, and something that reminds me of cigar tobacco. Not that common either, but I suspect when people smell it on me they will think it's A*men just because of the chocolate. 07 November 2005

I love Angel, so consider that with this review. To me the scents are different, though there are definite gourmand similarities of the fruit, chocolate, patchouli notes. Animale is closer to A*Men, and Yohji, but still holds its own unique spot. Animale has a delicious and slightly delirious cognac and cigar note not present in the others. It was certainly not popular at the time it was released-- but I am surprised more people have not rediscovered this scent once Angel made gourmand more mainstream. This one is deep and rich and perfect for some enchanted evening, or just when you want to feel lushly sexy.I prefer it to the women's version, which is more dilute and lacks the cigar/cognac notes. Oh PS-- I am a woman. But find it equally alluring on men. 25 October 2004

After being curious about this fragrance for a year I finaly found it, immediately I thought it was a wonderful scent, people compare it to Angel, bu in fact Angel should be compare to Animale, since it was the first Gourmand scent released back in 1993, that being said, its no where as nausiating as Angel, it has less sweetness than angel, and has a luxurious smell to it, if you like a like a fragrance like Yohji, you will probably like this one..It's a unknown jewel. 24 July 2004

As horrible as Angel by Mugler. Smells virtually identical and just as cloying and nauseating. 18 March 2004
