Oh, yes… This one’s NICE! It immediately reminds me of Equipage, but this one has leather and a richer, fuller depth to its accords. The opening is a quiet lavender combined bergamot. But it has more of an almost leather depth to it – leather from the base, perhaps. I could sniff it for hours and the opening actually tries to oblige me with its longevity. I get mainly wood in the middle – cedar and sandalwood, judging from the era it was created, but the middle accord is too well blended to pick out very many individual notes – with the wood I detect a tiny bit of powder, and I’m sure the accord has jasmine in it, even though I can’t separate it out from the rest. The Base? Well, it’s the typical multi-noted base of the ‘70s, only done with more subtlety and refinement than most: Moss, leather, and a little bit of soft resin I can’t identify are what I can identify from the published pyramid basenotes. Gucci Pour Homme is the original Equipage (not the screechier current one) plus leather. Gucci’s accords are smoother and more sonorous – but similar. The added presence of leather and other smooth, deep richnesses provide a truly masculine, incredibly beautiful fragrance. Definitely one of the great ones… 14 November 2009

You can tell within seconds of application that this is not a modern release; they just don't make them like this anymore. After that somewhat nostalgic '70s-style introduction, GUCCI POUR HOMME surprises me, no, bowls me over, with a smooth yet masculine rendition of leather and woods. Wow! Considering the price I paid for this discontinued classic, I can't help feeling pleased with myself. Well, how does it compare to the current Gucci Pour Homme? It doesn't. The new version has absolutely nothing on the original. And if I may borrow a quote,"This is gold, baby!" 13 November 2009

I guess I'm not getting it like everyone else. I smell a plain eau de cologne / chypre family scent with a sandalwood drydown. No leather. No big and boldness. Just ordinary and "lemony" woods. I rather liked Nobile but the original pour Homme isn't quite my bag. I'll reach for Homme de Gres when I need a dry lemony woods fragrance. 13 October 2009

One of the best I've had the pleasure of smelling. An uncle of mine had this back in the late eighties and I would steal a spray here and there. Always liked it. I had seen the prices it commands these days and thought I would never break down and actually buy a bottle, especially with the risk of a "turned" bottle. But sometimes things happen for the better..... I discovered a pretty damn good deal on ebay from an estate sale. I scooped up a 4oz for an unbelievable price. Upon first spray I realized how some scents are embedded in our memories forever. I've read countless reviews how people recite their memories being tied into the smell they remember or a certain scent. This smelled exactly as I remembered it and I was instantly brought back to a time when I was a kid and had no worries. Just trying to look cool and do what everyone else was doing. How times have changed. But this fragrance hasn't. Very dry from opening thoughout. Leather is evident from the begining, although restrained. The mix of mossy woods and the leather that I detect last for quite sometime. As Aromi states, it isn't the holy grail, but I wonder just how far it is from it. Thumbs way up. They just don't don't make em like this anymore. 03 September 2009

Very nice leather chypre from Gucci. This one is my favorite Gucci, bar none and has some DNA in common with Equipage and Eau de Patou pertaining to smoothness and notes. I have been very fortunate in finding 30ml and 100ml bottles of this vintage juice from certain ebay sellers and the juice was good to go in every transaction. I get medium sillage and medium longevity from Gucci PH. A part of me likes it for this reason and another part wishes it was stronger. Not the Holy Grail, but for the collectophile, a must have. 8.5 out of 10. Thumbs up all day. 26 June 2009

If this came out now, I wouldn't really take much notice, but for the 1976-1989 era, this is definately good stuff. Woody and distinctly masculine. Seems to be the epitome of a man's fragrance, even more than Chanel PM. Bottles are quite expensive now but this is a must for a collector, its a legend. 18 June 2009

I bought my bottle in Paris during my sophmore year of high school. It was with me for my proms, homecomings, graduation, and a bit of my university years. It was fantastic. If I had to choose only one scent to limit myself to for the rest of my years, this would be in the top two, at least. I have a feeling now that the scent would bring tears to my eyes, though. All those wasted years....... 26 February 2009

This is the dry, bold, very Italian chypre that Gucci produced long before it turned to the cedar chest for inspiration in its flagship men's frag. If you like the original Equipage, you'll love Gucci pour Homme. I'm not sure it's worth the secondary market price it fetches on eBay, though, especially since so many bottles have now "turned" over the years. Look for old store stock and try to buy on the cheap. 09 February 2009

If you are a fan of Chanel Pour Monsieur, Ungaro II, Armani Eau Pour Homme, then this classic will be highly sought after by yourself. A favourite of mine (particularly in summer months) during the mid 1980s, I have been fortunate to find the occasional miniature on ebay. Trounces the latest pencil shavings incarnation, I nearly had an aneurism when I saw that my 15 year old son had "borrowed" it from my collection 12 June 2008

Thou shalt listen to mine words, for I am the God of perfume, and mine are the Truth and Light...lol That was directed at the people at Gucci. Why on earth did you decided to discontinue this! The original, as I remember it, smelled VERY masculine, fresh, clean, aromatic, woody and powerful. The newer Gucci pour Hommes are abominable! Loved this stuff! 15 June 2007

This is extremely woody, a very manly smell and I do like it on my husband, but would not wear it myself. But what I would say most is that it is very macho and that can be good on a man, so I bought my husband a few botles because it was being discontinued. 21 January 2007

Ah, how times have changed. Gucci pour homme ('76) hails from a time period where men didnt used to shy away from manly mossy-chypre fragrances. A time when A*Men loving metrosexuals were quite rare. I procured a decant of this from a swap, and am disappointed to discover that Gucci have discontinued this classic. Maybe fruity-ozonic-florals are to be blamed. Or just fruity people. Just Kidding. I wasnt able to find the notes structure for Gucci ('76), but I find that it exhibits a refined macho 70's vibe. The opening is sharp - lots of lavender and some bergamot. From there, its all woods and moss. Infact, it smells like a drier non-floral version of another 70s classic - Van Cleef pour homme. The base is mossy, woody, and animalic (is it castoreum that I smell?). A far cry from the sweet sexiness of Gucci Envy, this should have been rereleased instead of Gucci pour homme (2003). Longevity is great - atleast 7 hours. Its unfortunate that great fragrances of the past have to be discontinued or are limited in distribution just because the nowadays the general public prefers to smell like lollipops, soggy fruit, the Red Sea and chocolate bars instead of bold mossy-chypres which used to be the main staple of the complex manly concoctions of past. Gucci pour homme ('76) is the latest victim of this trend that I have discovered on my fragrance journey. 15 November 2006

I'M PROBABLY THE LAST PERSON ON THE EARTH TO TRY THIS OLD CLASSIC AND I LOVE IT. I ONLY WISH IT WAS EASIER TO FIND AND A LOT LESS EXPENSIVE. IT'S A CLEAN, CLASSY FRAGRANCE THAT HAS GREAT STAYING POWER. ONLY WISH I HAD TRIED IT A DECADE EARLIER! JOSHAUGUSTT 24 October 2005

Why, why in the h*ll would Gucci discontinue this classic fragrance. I stocked up on back in the early 1990s, but now I can't find it anywhere. How can Gucci just abandon their first classic fragrance. It was far better that the newer fragrances, although I like Envy and Rush very much. Please, Gucci, don't throw your first baby away! Bring it back! NOW! (I just hope Gucci marketing personnel read this website!) 11 October 2005

A clean, classy fragrance. Light and not overpowering. Still one of my all time favorites. Wish they would re-release it if only for a limited run. 09 January 2005

Very pleasant, professional. I find it a little more refined than Envy, but similar (dare I say). I cannot wait to try the new version. 06 February 2004

Typical ultra sharp, ultra heavy 70's fragrance. Think of a cross between Aramis and Givenchy Gentleman. Very IN YOUR FACE! Not a fragrance to impress the ladies. It actually smells like alot of cheap very strong aftershaves. A bad first outing for a Gucci mens fragrance. Thank goodness for Envy and the new GUCCI pour HOMME! 19 January 2004
