A massive 1994 hit from Jacques Cavallier, I dare say L'Eau D'Issey pH was the inspiration behind the wildly successful Armani's 1996 release, Acqua di Gio. Fortunately for me it fell short of achieving the latter's insane popularity and thus remains sufficiently obscure, at least in my part of the world. Guys, women adore this scent even if you find it a little too safe. Let no amount of hype detract from the fact that this scent truly belongs in the pantheon of great fresh/aquatic fragrances.

Aquatic fruits and floral. Strong sillage and longevity. Over hyped and overpraised.
A mega-hit with the kinder that have moved up from Curve, as well it should be.
Bottom line? If you like Acqua di Gio you'll probably like this one.
I yawn in your general direction.

Issey Miyake L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme

Guilty pleasures I have many. I love fine food and will pay lots of money for a tasting menu at one of my favorite chef's restaurants. On the other hand some nights there is nothing like a Burger King Whopper with cheese. There are times I sit there chewing thinking this is better than anything I have ever eaten before. As in life so it is with perfume. I have found a number of niche aquatic scents that I love but there are some days when I wear Jacques Cavallier's 1994 creation for Issey Miyake, L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme, that I think this is still the best. L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme is Perfume 101 for many colognoisseurs and rightfully so. It has been a staple scent of the fresh, aquatic category and is many perfume wearers aquatic of choice. One reason is it is probably one of the longest lasting in this category of scent. It is the only one I own that I have to be careful not to spray too much on and I don't have to worry about freshening it up later in the day. That is a big advantage. The other reason is it just is a good, solid scent. Yes there are better out there, a few. There are many much worse, a lot. From the top L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme blows in on a fresh breeze of citrus with yuzu taking the lead but there is a slight hit of coriander and sage to give a little unexpected depth to the top. The heart takes those and adds some spices with a little more heft to them as nutmeg, cinnamon and saffron deepen the development. They are joined by a green geranium note. The base goes all woody fresh with a light mix of sandalwood, vetiver and a touch of amber. L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme is the epitome of a linear scent starting off light and increasing in weight and depth thorughout. It has a nice sillage to it to add to its already mentioned longevity. Just as when I sit at Burger King eating my Whopper; L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme manages to bring the same guilty smile to my face, as big as it gets.

I don't usually try to discuss all the notes, only what it will smell like after an hour or so, so you really know what you're getting.. For me, after an hour this stuff smells exactly like Lemon Shaving Cream.... now that is not bad, if I shaved with cream and a razor, this would be exactly what i would want to smell like, so it is masculine.. but it smells like "something" ya know, I like colognes that don't smell like something so apparent, and this just makes me think Barbasol..... sweeter and stronger than Acqua, but similar, would go with this over Acqua for sure, lasts longer too... Will say honestly I've gotten more compliments from this than any other frag though, however still not my favorite..

Hmmm this is a tough one for me. I bought this cologne strictly from hype. Cologne forums etc. Now this cologne does smell good, don't get me wrong, but there's no way it lives up to what everyone told me. Very much like aqua di gio. Haven't really worn this one much.

Do I think it smells good? 4/5
Compliments from the ladies? N/a
Overall 4/5

This one is insane!

The opening is powerfully fresh. Almost too fresh - it smells somewhat like laundry detergent. And yet...! Something in the middle stops it from becoming just that. After the initial blast comes a very fresh and invigorating floral mixture that, on my skin, lasts for an eternity. Beneath all that I-just-smelled-a-beautiful-and-delicious-flower-on-a-summer-afternoon stuff there hides a note of musk that doesn't let itself known until a little later. It's elusive but powerfully masculine - it reminds me of cigarettes somehow.

Amazing smell. I think I'm sold. No wonder it's so popular.

The word "zing" comes to mind when I tried this. I'm a fan of well composed citrus fragrances, and this is definitely one of the best, if not the best.
Slightly reminds me of Clinique Happy, but much, much better.
I could use this one as a pick me up on those dreary days.

Thumbs way up.

There’s one thing I’ve noticed about most newbie Basenoters – they usually tend to latch onto the ‘holy trinity’ of designer scents that, automatically, creates the perfect foundation for any man’s fragrance wardrobe: Le Mâle (cold weather), Envy for Men (special occasions and dates) and L’eau D’Issey (warm weather). Although these may not be the first three scents that a newbie Basenoter will purchase, chances are they will definitely be among their first 5-10 full-bottle purchases. I, myself, have been a victim of this ‘beginner’s crutch’ and it, admittedly, took me some time to bring myself to remove all three from my wardrobe without feeling even the slightest bit of remorse.

L’eau D’Issey was actually the final one that I managed to weed out. A good indication of its ‘superior’ quality compared to the other two, no? Well, not exactly – they’re all just as synthetic and flawed as each other. The fact is summer scents, with decent longevity, are incredibly difficult to come across (especially for those not in the know). Therefore, any reservations I had about L’eau D’Issey were put on hold due to its stronghold on my arsenal for warmer weather (which wasn’t particularly impressive back then). It was only after a period of time (during which I encountered better quality and longer lasting scents for spring and summer) that L’eau D’Issey eventually lost its grip and fully revealed itself for what it is – a highly synthetic and artificial smelling yuzu (grapefruit) composition with average lasting power.

From the very start, I always overlooked the fact that (upon application) it always made me sneeze; for a person who rarely suffers from migraines, for quite a while, I never questioned whether it was the sillage from L’eau D’Issey that was responsible for my subtle headaches; and I always found myself refusing to accept that its longevity wasn’t as great as originally thought (skin chemistry or olfactory fatigue were usually held accountable). Yes, the fear of not having something appropriate to wear on warm days worried me, and L’eau D’Issey successfully tapped into this fear and preyed upon it for quite some time. Now, luckily, those days are long gone…

L’eau D’Issey is a great starting point for any newbie but please bear in mind the hazards mentioned in the above paragraph. If nothing else, it does serve as a decent ‘starting out’ fragrance. Just don’t expect anything more from its shallowness, as your nose becomes more sophisticated, or you may end up being sorely disappointed.

It's pure lemon/lime, but nice. 3-4 sprays and I'm good. It's a wonderful scent that beats Acqua di Gio and at least where I live is not a common scent. The ladies enjoy it and if you're going to a bar you can spray even more without worry.

Perfect. This is a great scent. I consider this to be a classic.

Smells great, but discrete, yet still has good sillage. This is the perfect fragrance for a scorching hot summer day.

A relative gave me this one with the supplementary shower gel. I enjoyed the shower gel, but did not like this cologne at all.

For a guy to wear a cologne, you want somethhing to make you stand out you know. This was just awful - its pretty much a feminine perfume, very girly smelling scent indeed.

I am very shocked when I go to the store and find that this scent is actually one of the most expensive out. To think that I threw out half a bottle of it!

Definitely a misunderstood scent - Do Not touch this one people

Though this can be overly common, I still find this to be one of the best "fresh" scents. It has great longevity and projection and serves its purpose very well. I like the floral dry-down alot.

The most complimented fragrance I have. It is similar to Acqua di Gio but has something extra with and more character. More masculine IMO. My favorite of all.

In my opinion, the most beautifully crafted fragrance ever. Everything about this scent hold a place in my heart. It could be because it transitioned me from my Axe/ADIDAS/Curve self to a scent guru. This is the scent that got me into the fragrance. It could be the uniquely shaped, frosted glass bottle and the mysteriously colored juice, but what really makes me love this is the initial spray which makes it seem as if the EdT is carbonated because of the fizziness of it. It could also be my favorite scent of all time because my boyfriend wears it, go figure lol. Anyway, the longevity is excellent and so is the sillage. Another cool thing about this scent is that it's aimed for the summer, but because of it's strength, it can just as easily be worn in the dead-winter. Love this fragrance, wish I could give it more than 2 thumbs up lol

I wore this for a week and tried to like because so many said it was the best thing going. This stuff smells like salt water from the initial spritz until the end of the day. There is definitely a spicy note within the fragrance but generally it smells like ocean water to me. It actually made my stomach turn one day after applying it. I really wanted to make it a signature scent but you have to settle on what works for you.

Definitly an aquatic. Very mossy in the opening, but on the dry down the juniper stands out. This is what would happen if a good woodsy scent collided with a nice mossy aquatic. An enjoyable scent overall.

I've tried so many different fragrances: some cheap and some ultra expensive (By Kilian, Amouage, etc) and yet none of them have the balance on my skin that this has!

I know it's 15 years old, it's probably incredibly synthetic, etc., but this stuff just WORKS (on my skin).

It smells great from start to finish, parthly because it doesn't evolve much on me, although it does change a little. So many scents smell great as they open but turn to a cloying sickly sweet mess in the drydown. This stays balanced. Perfect for a summer evening or a winters day.
The silage is good and the longevity is at least 6-8 hours on me.

It's the best of the men's in the Issey range. The Intense is ok but doesn't move me. The Blue is plain awful.

I can't put my thumb up or down on this one.

Sometimes L'Eau D'Issey impresses me in ways other aquatics can't. It is fresh and spicy. Woody yet sensual. Unfortunately, it is quite often short lived. The weather is always a factor though. In humid conditions, it tends to thrive it seems. Or is it dry? I forget.

I'll give it a neutral, although I really wish I could give it the thumbs up.

yes, it´s a good scent... But, that smell is out there in many places with many many men wearing this... That´s not for me. I don´t want to smell like every man, including those that just bought it because someone told it´s was a good fragrance. That´s L'eau d' issey.

The citrus-laden opening is admittedly somewhat enjoyable, but this one quickly goes south on my skin after the top notes flash off, leaving behind a scent that I can only describe as Rotting Plastic Flowers on the Planet Mars. Really, this is vile.

Popular with the ladies? If wearing this scent caused the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders to magically appear in U.S. Marine Corps Hueys and rappel through my windows...well, I would probably wear it in that case, BUT I WOULD HAVE MIXED EMOTIONS!!

Waxy lemon!

Have you ever seen those fake fruits in a bowl for decoration? Take one of those lemons and imagine how it would smell if it were real. That's L'Eau d'Issey PH. It's a real fake lemon floral. Sillage and longevity above average.

If you're looking for a civilized L'Eau d'Issey PH, try Floris Cefiro.

I love the freshness of this scent. It can be a little overpowering on the first sniff, but once the fizzy top notes have died down a little it retains a fresh crisp ginger zing all day. Again, I prefer the 'pour homme' to the ladies' version. Its more definite, somehow.

A nice springtime/summertime fragrance.

I bought this back in 1994 while I was at uni. It was my 3rd signature scent, and one I've kept in my wardrobe ever since. That it is so popular really is of no worry to me. This is a beautiful acquatic scent that manages to be woody, citrusy and spicy as well.

I keep meaning to buy some high grade sandalwood oil to layer this with, to see how that would work.

The scent of many years of my life. I'm moving on to woody orientals and forays into oud, but this one will always be on my shelf.

I would like to think that here on Basenotes we have moved beyond the standard of review that states,"The chics go mad for it". For men squatting on their haunches grooming each other, this might be a pertinent evaluation, but I am more interested in this based on it's own merits. The genesis of this fragrance is very fresh and herbal, almost as pungent as the drydown in the Bleu version. The brevity of the opening is a godsend, and the descent into the drydown is a very pleasant oceanic experience. Sadly, the whole production is transported with haste into a thin synthetic dimension which is where it peters out all to quickly. This really is something of a Curate's Egg, but with the bad parts too annoying for me to forgive them.

A really remarkable scent which -- like Acqua di Gio, another of Monsieur Cavallier's creations -- thoroughly deserves its success based purely on its own merits (OK, you can shoot me now). Consider the following:

- It is a citrus, yet it lasts forever (much like Boucheron PH). And this isn't a case of being able to last by standing on a non-citrusy drydown -- the drydown holds down its lemony anchor until its last dying breath. In warm / moderate weather it lasts upwards of 8 hours on me with a few very abbreviated sprays, and in cold weather, well north of 12 hours.

- It's a citrus that's different from all other citrii due to very distinct floral elements that make themselves known fairly quickly. So don't pay any attention to people that say that this is a citrus like any other -- it isn't. You will not confuse l'eau d'Issey for anything else. It's quirky, distinctive and imaginative. As a result, 15 years after its launch, it still smells thoroughly contemporary and sophisticated.

- The citrus smells rich and intensely natural... again, like Boucheron PH's. This is not the liquid carbon dioxide mojito that far too many modern aquatics smell like.

Smells great, smells fundamentally unlike anything else, and lasts forever. What more could one possibly want of a great scent? And why would one deprive oneself of the opportunity to wear it because "it's too popular"? Life's too short, my friends. An enduring classic -- and a classic for a reason.

The way this cologne evolves while on your skin is absolutely amazing. I didn't like it when I first smelled it, but sprayed some on anyway. Several hours later, I caught the most wonderful scent and realized it was the Issey, which had dried down and exposed new layers. Very long lasting and makes your clothes smell wonderful.

This is a decent scent, thoug it's a little on the sweet/citrusy side. If you spray too much, be prepared to knock others out. Plus, my dentist uses this cologne, and honestly I don't like the dentist very much, so this scent brings back not so great memories.

It would be a thumbs up, but I have to give it a neutral because it reminds me too much of my dentist.

This cologne is very popular with the ladies, when i wear this I am recieving compliments from girls left, right and centre .. I defiently highly recommend this fragrance, I found with this 1 that there is no need to over apply it as it does project really well and is really long lasting, 3 sprays with this fragrance is all you need at the most. A great fragrance from Issey Miyake.

I was given a huge bottle of L'Eau D'Issey EDT, and I have only worn it three times. It's just far too overbearing and I just don't get it at all. It just smells like an aquatic explosion and that opening never seems to leave it. I'm just too into bone-dry Chypre, fragrances to appreciate this one. Not a winner.

Hmmmmm A rather intresting frag.... Was extremely popular when it first came out. I dont think its the best but it sure is better than alot I have smelled in it's class. I have only brought 1 bottle of this in my life time & I dont think I will buy another unless it was given to me.. I will give it a neutral rating. Its not bad, nor is it all that great! Longevity is average on me.. Mayb 6 hours...

L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme is destined to become a classic. It surprises how it can be both fresh and long lasting.
It opens with a spicy citrus bouquet and the heavenly woody-floral drydown is nothing short of amazing! The development is perfect moreso it towers over AdG or any other edt of this category.
Please ignore critics that pan this due to its popularity - it is sublime!

an amazing citrus based scent with the right balance of spicy and woody notes which still manages to keep this scent fresh. lasts forever on me. i think many overlook the basenotes. it has one of most musky, earthy & woody basenotes which to an extent is powdery. a winner in everybook there is. a must have in every collection. a great daily wear and yes, a hit with the ladies. this one is not my favorite if the Issey's, it's definitely is the second best. the firts place goes to Bleue

Maybe it's just me, well, probably just me but after the top and middle notes have settled, the base note really just smells like a wet green-tea bag, and I'm really not into that although I really liked the top note, as well as the middle note...

The silliage is great - when it lasts. On my skin, longevity is a factor for Issey... Some reviews have put it as long as 24 hours even after washing, but It's been six hours and I can't smell anything but the wet green teabag on my wrists. I can smell the flora and the initial freshness that Issey delivered six hours ago on my shirt, but that's not really where I want it to last.

L'Eau D'Issey gets a neutral.

Truly pleasant and dignified fresh male scent that has so much layer to show, story to tell and people to seduce. It is almost a crime to wear it in winter though: this must be reserved for lazy summer days. I had used this when I was like 15 I think.

My complaint: the same thing with Cool Water, Envy for Men, Dolce&Gabbana pour Homme, Le Male by JPG etc.: so many men are using it, it has no depth, character, or charisma left to it. Even I had used it as a 15 year old pimply boy. No names, who knows nothing about masculine elegance, or really annoying guys you might know, who should never touch anything this nice and pure, are polluting the perception you might have about these fragrances, and that is exactly what has happened to Issey.

How can I use this scent out in the public today (and believe me, I am ballsy about my fragrance choices) when so many classless/faceless men I know are wearing the exact same scent? I don't want to share my personal choice with so many other men per se, and it cannot be helped.

Nowadays, I am using Obsession for Men sometimes with great confidence and happiness, since it is not the 80s, not many men wear that gorgeous creation anymore. Maybe 10 years from now, Issey will speak volumes again. But for now, it is just used, abused and bruised to me.

Fantastic creation though: almost like a gorgeous suit or shoe in a store that has been tried by so many other men before you.

This shares a note with Escape for men, and yet it's so much more pleasant. It is a little much, at first. However, as the top notes cool off what remains is spicy and woody. The only strike against it is it's popularity, but we can't go tossing around the down thumb because the perfumer did a fine job.

When I first smelled L'Eau D'Issey I wasn't all too thrilled with it. Then the smell grew on me. I added it to my collection and noticed almost immediately thereafter that girls were now standing a lot closer to me as I waited in line, or stood in the elevator. They would even sit closer to me in class!!!

Overall, I strongly that this is one of the overall best men's fragrances. The notes are seamlessly balanced, and the drydown is nothing short of stellar. L'Eau D'Issey has an energy, a 'zing' that makes its wearer stand out. This is really powerful stuff. The key to this fragrance is the drydown. I sprayed it yesterday at noon before going to a party at 2 pm. A girl complemented me on my smell 9 hours later!!! Don't let the strong citrus of initial application fool you; give it some time and let the good times roll!

I always been into the heavier woody scents. Dont know why...I always thought the fruity ones lacked personality, they always seemed to fade away within the hour on my skin. . This one proved me wrong. This one is so overwhelming lemon like (the Yuzu) but still pulls it off. I dont wear it that much because it so popular and i dont want to smell like everybody else. But eventually i always grab it, use it and feel great. And i know it will stay in my collection...

What can I say, this is my favorite scent, and when you want to "get fresh" and go out, this is the stuff you need to try before you but, very well put together, sophisticated, classy, eye opening, but not brash, and definitely not harsh.

This is a first ballot hall-of-famer for nightclubbing fragrances besides Le Male, Desire, Dreamer, A*Men, and Fahrenheit. I've been using this since '94 and it has never begun to disappoint me in any situations filled with women. A lifetime keeper for me.

I have grown tired of this scent after having worn it on and off for 14 years. Once you've sampled more niche fragrances this starts to smell a bit synthetic. That said, even though every man and his dog seems to have a bottle and it has been imitated countless times, I still think that this is the best of its kind. Top notes verge on being too sharp but middle is simply lovely and it stays 'fresh' for hours on the skin. A smell that can cut through a smoky bar and a bona-fide modern classic

That day I was sitting on the bus on my way to work. Next to me was some young girl (apr. 18-19 years old). I was thoughtful. Suddenly I felt something on my shoulder. It was her chin. Her nose was quite close to my neck. She had a little smile on her face and it was so obvious that she was enjoying. Her nostrils were spread, her eyes were closed. It was no doubt; she liked my scent very much. She didn’t say anything and there was no need to. I must say this: She wasn’t aware of my existence, not even for a moment, and because of that the whole situation was even more likable.
Well, sometimes we receive speechless compliments and they can be more convincing than “oh, my God, how good you smell!!!” compliments.
By the way, I was wearing L’eau d’Issey that day.

Men and women alike really appreciate this scent. The top notes are almost pungent, but in a pretty way. It is kind of a pretty scent. Amazing in summer. AMAZING. In heat. But boring in fall. Nice in winter. That's how I experience it. Dry down is really something. Spicy fresh. Woody lemon. I really like the bottle too. Get it.

Smells synthetic to me. However the dry down is absolutely amazing. This has woody notes infused with other ingredients to well that it is overall soothing and very mild (i detect light smelling north-indian sandalwood, which is not as strong as majority of fragrances using stronger smelling mysore sandalwood).

Oh and one more thing...this works like a charm w/ the ladies.

I don't know Vibert nor am I am I as articulate about fragrances as Vibert but I have to agree about L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme. Can't take the fragrance. I don't care who wears it it smells like chemicals to me and I've tried it on my skin and it did nothing for me. I've smelled it on countless (COUNTLESS) others and didn't care for the smell on them either so it must be the fragrance. Some things are for some people and some things aren't I guess. For those who love this fragrance, and obviously most here love it, enjoy it in good health.

A potent and singular citrus fragrance. I think that the yuzu and the aldehydes are the key to the uniqueness of the top notes, which are as tart, refreshing, and sparkly as I want an opening to be. It’s special, it’s attention getting, it has good sillage, and it doesn’t appear to be widely variable on different skin types. It’s not a beautiful accord, but it is bright and lively and fresh, and very long lasting for a citrus accord. The middle notes add florals and spice to the mixture, while maintaining the liveliness of the opening; much of the tartness from the opening remains, and the freshness becomes smoother — a touch more elegant than the top. I believe that L’Eau D’Issey is primarily a linear fragrance because it retains the opening’s tart freshness through the drydown. I don’t love this fragrance but I like it: It is a very good one because of its uniqueness and freshness, its excellent sillage, and its wonderful longevity. The warnings about spraying too much and risking the cloying headache are oh-so-true. Best to be prudent in application.

Anyone who follows my Basenotes posts and reviews knows that I’m no fan of aquatic scents, and hence not predisposed to enjoy L’Eau d’Issey. Indeed, I find its brash, synthetic, calone drenched opening repugnant. To me it smells less like the ocean than like an industrial chemical – which I suppose is exactly what calone is. I don’t detect much change as the scent ages, except perhaps for a few bright flowers and a helping of artificial fruit flavoring. (Think green Lifesavers.) Two or three hours later I’m left with a harsh woody (cypress?) base, but as Issey transforms it passes through a phase that I can best describe as rotting seaweed.

One thing I dislike about L’Eau d’Issey is that its ozonic note is not even minimally blended. The result is crass and crude, as if L’Eau d’Issey has its naked butt up against the school bus window, mooning any motorist unlucky enough to pass. Paradoxically, I have to give the scent some credit for its brashness – it’s far less bland than the thousands of limp aquatic imitators that have come in its wake. As much as I dislike it, I must also acknowledge L’Eau d’Issey’s significance in the history of scent. It is a landmark composition that epitomizes the past decade’s dominant fragrance genre. So though I rate it very low, it’s not so much because I think it smells bad (which I do), but because there are so many more well-constructed, nuanced, and sophisticated clean aquatic scents to choose from.

I do not understand this fragrance. It smells good, but not in the way I want it too. It is a very cool fragrance. Imagine being in a pond with lillies in the spring.. That is the eviornment I invision when I smelll this.. Now I remember a post when a member said he gets compliments on this fragrance and I cannot imagine the amount of this light fragrance he would wear lol. HE must have been wearing his weight in D'Issey because other wise this does not seem to be very strong. But it does last, just unless you are really close to someone or unless you have a 24 oz application of this stuff it probably wont come off the skin much. The Lavender, amber and blue lily notes are great. IMO it comes off a little like salty water.. like the womens version. Idk about this one, maybe I shall return

I really wanted to like this fragrance... I really did.... but the descriptions given here must have bypassed my olfactory system. All I could smell was a lemon-squash type of odor, very light and quite flimsy, and with not much else going on underneath.

I experienced this back in 1999 when someone walked into the room and instantaneously got everybody's attention. To me, this is one of the king of colognes, a classic that will never die and a must have for any fragrance enthusiast.
It smells like coldness. Imagine taking a deep breath of cold freezing winter air, with notes of lemon and something blue and a bit of cedarwood. It lasts forever. Even after washing your clothes. Use sparingly, otherwise everybody for miles will know you are wearing it. Also wins the award for the most copied fragrance ever.

I want to open by saying that I love perfume;the olfactory attribute of all being is I believe the most fascinating and complex.
L'Eau D'Issey is one of the most sophisticated EDTs I have come across in a while. Its Floral in a very masculine way (I don't know how Miyake pulled that on off...but he did !)It starts off strongly with the Yuzu and other fresh ingredients on the top notes. Its longevity is really interesting - When first applied L'Eau D'Issey's projection is very strong but as time passes by it mellows down and the base notes cling onto you very closely but still distinctly present to people around you ( I guess the Haitian Vetiver is to blame for that!) .The base notes can last on your skin for a good 16-24 hrs and on your clothes....forever in my observation.
Its as though L'Eau D'Issey evolves into a more personal fragrance as the day goes by.This is the kind of perfume you at times want to wear when alone at home just that you don't share its wonderful fragrance with anyone. Its been around for a good 13 years now and grown quite common BUT is still a very very personal favorite.
Viva Miyake...!!!

one of the best citrus scents.it opens strong then it settles down to a linear mossy citrusy scent.so the best part is the drydown. i was dissapointed by the longevity.it lasts 4 hours max on my skin.hope to try the intense version soon.

I have always associated this fragrance with four colours. From top to bottom, I would describe the scent like this:

1: Light grey. Very short-lived notes. Ozone, water mist, and a strange 'dry-cleaner' smell.

2: Sun-yellow. Mostly citrus but hints of saffron, too. A certain 'sharp' note is noticeable which gives this part a mineralic/salty twist.

3: Greenish-yellow. The best part. A sun-drenched forest combined with warm spices. Contains an element that reminds me of birch-bark.

4: Dark green. More forest but not sun-drenched anymore. Dark, moist, mossy. A special character is given by the combination of light tobacco and a soil-like note. This fourth part has almost infinite longevity.

What a dichotomy. This is the scent that started me on my path of fragrance collection and connoisseurship, a perennial favorite of mine, yet I couldn't get rid of it soon enough.

Like all aquatic citrus scents this one is overly popular with the Abercrombie Generation, alongside Aqua de Gio you will smell this one everywhere.

I got the most compliments on this scent, but I just can't wear it anymore. I try to stay as far away from scents like this as possible now.

Good for the Sheeple, not for me.

This one can definitely be unisex. I don't think it's sex in a bottle, either, but it's got a great dry down, green, woody, vetiver. It goes through the top, mid, base stages very clearly, and is a lovely clean, fragrance that wears on female skin very well, without being too masculine.

Vanilla? Flowers? Whatever...

Honestly, please, anyone who is visiting this site to get a feel of what this men's perfume my be like, DON'T LISTEN TO ALL THE RAGING HYPE AND GROSS MISINTERPRETATION OF NOTES...

Ok, granted that they got some of them right - I guess waterlily gives it a light floralness, but not overtly.

If anything, this cologne is fresh, sharp, clean, but quite strong. It's very aquatic, green, oceanic and salty.

Its no where near as flowery as many others here have insisted - and even if it did have some vanilla in it (which it might do), it is such a small amount as to provide, if anything, a grounding effect...certainly doesn't lend any floralness to the character of this perfume...

Very modern - such that it has been contemporary for the last 13 years!

Oceanic, aquatic, fresh, clean-like, a little bit ozonic...quite nice...

It is actually different enought from other contemporary fragrances to do away with any thoughts on whether this is generic or not, but alas, it is sooo over used by sooo many people!

Still, great stuff!

L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme was so popular when it was released, everyone wanted to wear it. But I found it too floral, even till today. Here it is like a must-own fragrance for a certain group to be identified/belong. Recently I received a bottle as a gift, which I wore very seldom, smell great, but too common.

I went to Italy in July 2001 and smelled this on my airport car driver and asked him what it was. Got back home and wore it. NICE! I'm a floral hater by far and it goes on floral and sweet a bit but with this cologne it's all about THE DRYDOWN. The end result after 1 hour is the best drydown scent possibly ever!
I've got 10% left and I will move on another new scent but I recommend it to most! Best drydown in my top 3.

Theres no denying that the market is somewhat saturated with 'L'eau D'Issey' PH, but the very fact it continues to appeal to markets both old and new, speaks for its mass appeal.
The thing is, its actually a fantastic scent - a woody marine fragrance with the freshness of citrus played against precious woods and spices. Other citrus/woody/aquatics such as 'Aqua di Gio PH' pale in contrast to this creation. For its complex variety of accords, LDIPH is remarkably clean and uncomplicated. It is a fragrance that projects well and lasts a long time. LDIPH is ideal in any season, day or night. IMO, its versatility and refined characteristics will see it remain a favourite for many years to come. Already a 'modern classic'.

Do you know love at first sight? Well, it happened with me when I first saw the advertising for this fragance on a mall, ten years ago. When I asked to taste this frag on my skin, well, I was about to ask the bottle for marriage...
Anyway, this is a very special fragrance for me, I won from my mother and it was my only fragrance for years. Wonderful, very green and long-lasting...
After ten years it still has the same perfume, the same longevity... and it still fills me with an elegant aura everytime I wear it...

Despite some objections to the flowery character provided by the vanilla, I find this scent intoxicating. Its uniqueness within a class of fragrance that seem all alike really speaks to its character. Really, it comes down to the individual preference, but if you are shopping within this category, this is a no-brainer.

I've smelled this fragrance several times on other persons. A very recognizable aroma, and a very strong trail.

The head is based on citric notes, persisting for a long time during middle and base notes. The middle note feels aquatic and floral, and the base note is green tending to vetiver. When smelled can't get spicy notes, but the trail it leaves is mainly citrus fruits.

Extremely strong (or maybe used in excess by everyone on whom I smelled it), it have a established niche of fans and it's well accepted by women. For me the citric is pungent, opposite Boucheron Homme which is also based on citric notes but well blended with woods. Unisex style, it's recommended for summer times, daytime and evening occasions ... it's so much strong for an office use. Age range around 20-35 years old.

this is the closest thing to love potion number 9. when i first came across this scent i was not impressed. It had a strong cheap woman's perfume smell as a top note but when it dried down... WOW. i can only explain this scent as fresh, masculine and intoxicating to women. I actually had a woman tell me that... "you smell intoxicating." Anyway, you will definately get noticed wearing this. Word of advice, don't spray on your clothes. One spray to the chest, one to your abdomin and two sprays to the neck is perfect. It is different from any other cologne b/c it is versatile. I can wear it to work, class, a date and the clubs. A must buy. I thought Dolce and Gabbana was best for nightlife b/c it will get you noticed, but Issey Miyake is number 1! buy it.

If you're a citrus-hater, avoid this. It's otherwise a good scent, but for me, the yuzu is just too much to render it unwearable. Hence the neutral review. After the piercing citrus note is gone, the drydown is pretty good. A couple of pretty girls at the gym today seemed to compete for the stepper next to me... It just might have been the charm of L'Eau D'Issey - who knows :)

This is the first fragrance I ever purchased for myself, and is something that I have worn for years. Issey stays the same on my skin as it comes out of the bottle which now is a little disappointing. The lack of depth and interest with this fragrance doesn't lend it very much wear anymore, but its still a signature scent for me. Timeless and ultimately soothing for me.

A bona fide classic scent and certainly the best of the Issey Miyake main line. The master designer at Firmenich Jacques Cavallier has created something quite classic with this. At first its green and fresh and the soft woody undertone... oblige me crazyingly sniffing! Hummmmmm this is very nice scent. I agree resitantly it is a bit like Acqua di Giò... but I emphasize: "It's much better" It is type of the fragrant Giò, and ends light, subtle and distinctly green. This would be quite nice on a man or woman, but since I wear it I don't think it smells particularly feminine. Classifies it as a men fragrance so it should not be listed for women... although I can easily see women wearing it as well. Lasts pretty long and goes with daily wear. Highly recommended.

This is a potent citrus/aquatic I have used for years, but have yet to put a dent in the bottle. A single spritz on the neck is all you need. I can smell this on my clothes for DAYS. Sillage is high and longevity is 12+ hours. I would say that this is definitely NOT for every day wear, although I think it would be appropriate in all 4 seasons. Lately I have found myself only craving to wear it on rainy days - weird. Many compare this to Aqua Di Gio. I think ADG is lighter and less complex - more suited to the office, but FAR too many people wear ADG.

Don't understand what the fuss is about. After the reviews and my collection growing I was expecting something oriental, clever, interesting, sweet, fresh, and inviting.

However all I got was a blast of citrus and a disgusting cheap womens perfume undertone.

Really dissappointed, this was on my shopping list, at the top, glad I tried before I bought.

Not saying don't buy it, just dont buy on hyp, try it first, its nothing special.

I bought this fragrance blind for an event at a yacht club, and I hit the nail on the head with this fresh, soapy fragrance. A number of notes blend together to create a unique, complex fragrance. Longevity and sillage are excellent. (I woke up with a headache as well, but after subsequent trials I've determined that was because of the open bar, not L'Eau.)

OK but not as great as advertised. This is not aristocratic Acqua di gio. Acqua di gio is aristocratic Issey Miyake - lets get that straight. It seems that IM has some annoying notes that ADG doesn't. The better, simpler scent wins because of what it doesn't have. Less is more in this case. Couldnt decide between up and neutral so it's neutral

I really wanted to like this one when it first came out because it was so self-consciously artsy or rather, fragrance as "art". I tried some at the local scent counter and liked it at first but then it started to annoy me and it just wouldn't go away. Then, like so many others have mentioned, I literally got a headache from it and felt kind of nauseated.
It was like my head was a Janpanese tea house and those naked guys who bang gongs and hang upside down came in and drank way too much sake with the geishas who were wearing way too much gardenia and then the tea house caught fire and burned to the ground.
It's the Hiroshima of men's fragrance.

I never found a unique smell as this one, except , Kenzo/L'eau par kenzo, Quasar/Quasar adventure from Jesus del Pozo, and Angel from Mugler.
It´s sblime, so fresh, different and with a fab caracther. (If you´re looking for something special, unique and rare, go for this ones, if not, avoid it, then go for Hugo boss or similar)...
The notes of verbena, tangerine and water lily gives a sharp but sweet hummid sensation.
These basenotes drydown fantastic mixing themselves with geranium, saffron, and airy tobacco flower. Then comes the nugmet and cinnamon. It´s a trendy, outcoming sweet fresh but citrus kind of sweet sour fragance.
Highly recommended.
Now, if you´re fan of this perfume check out the fresh version of the new L'eau Bleue, and try to avoid the original one; otherwise you live in Antartida :)

Very fresh very floral, very unique fragrance. Manages to pull off watery/flowery without being overly feminine. A moonlit walk by a sparkling pond. Not a light fragrance, be careful when applying. On nice summer days when I don't feel like slathering on the spice or sweetness of a lot of frags, I turn to L'eau D'issey. The Yuzu and Lily come off as quite soothing. I know a lot of people that found this frag to turn sour on their skin, so as always.. better to test before purchase!

What can I say, I've had it since it's first release and it's a classic that has spawned many an imitator but has never been quite trumped. Although it does have a department store ring to it and is now as common as mud, there is still something that sets this apart from the usual run-of-the mill offerings. I still wear this on a regular basis. It's definitiely a spring/summer fragrance though, much too light for winter.

I had many doubts about this scent, due to its huge fame, thinking: not another cheap smell sold under an expensive name. At first, i didn't smell anything- it reminded me of a very neural scent and almost of an ouourless substance. Before i ended thinking about this aspect, it became even worse- i had the feeling of smelling like overheated tea, with lots of honey in it, very little weak herbal essences used for tea and much more honey. But even this impression flew away fast and what remained was a pleasant aquatic drydown, which was comfortable to wear, yet was not much more specia tha the aquatic scents by fellow Japanese label Kenzo( to whom this one strinkingly resembles) or the equally well-known Boss Elements Aqua.

Wow, I'm stunned to read so many neutral/negative reviews! The female L'Eau D'Issey has won over the noses (and hearts) of so many women AND men! I personally find this Pour Homme version very much like the original. The basic differences being the citrus/sage notes at the top and the base which seems to dry into more of a woodsy/musky tone. I do caution any wearer to use a light hand with this juice ~ it has excellent staying power! If overdone a raging headache will ensue! In my commentary of the original LDI, it's noted how this particular formulation of notes was a turning point in the world of fragrance. I find this to be true of male scents as well...just think how many of these notes have been immitated/incorporated in newer fragrances over the past 10-12 years! Wether you choose to wear this one or not, it is highly deserving of praise - a brilliant creation.

I love L'Eau D'Issey. Very strange and lemony. Although I smell it on people often, I don't care how popular it is. I still wear Acqua Di Gio even though every other guy on the planet does, too. If it smells good it smells good, and this stuff definitely does!

Issey is a nice but common fragrance. It's nothing but a combination of citrus mixed with some sweet notes (very light) and a woody base. It's a bit marine too, maybe because of its salty smell. Medium longevity here.

Uuuuuuhhhhhh… Nooo!!! This water with light floral is definitely not sexy and not for me! This cologne smells like some old chemical that will nauseate everyone you and everyone around you. I've smelled cleaning solvents that smell better than this. Wear it with caution. Although it's a very popular name in the men cologne industry, I think this light floral water is overrated for what it is and definitely not worth the money. This fragrance has to be one of the vilest and worst ever.

In my opinion (and that's pretty much all we can share here) Issey Miyake managed to do something unique with this scent. Although I find it appealing on others, it can give me a headache when I wear it myself. If this scent has a similar effect on you, I might suggest Issey's new Issey Bleu.

Despite its popularity, this is one of my favorite summer scents. Issey starts off with a burst of Yuzu (Japanese lemon) and continues with very nice middle notes of lily. The woody base makes this fragrance last all day (at least on me), and also makes it suitable for occasional wearing during the rest of the seasons.

Aside from D&G PH, I consider this one of the few citrus scents I own that actually has more than one dimension. There's a bit of a clash at first between the green notes and wood, but they later smoothen out. I like it for what it's meant to be and it has garnished a few compliments from the opposite sex as well. It's a good spring/summer fragrance that will be called upon during the warmer months.

An excellent fragrance that's perfect for spring and summer. Don't let the fact that it's light, fool you. It wears very well and softens to a very nice soft mossy wood base. This was one of my first fragrances, but due to its ever growing popularity, I doubt I'll wear it for a while. Not to mention that it had a tendency to give me a headache. PS, don't ravel with this fragrance on an airplane! I was unfortunate in that the bottle leaked from the cabin pressure. My backpack reaked of Issey Miyake for almost 9 months.

A very fresh and aquatic fragrance that is great for a hot summer, sustains its refreshing citrus and aquatic notes for a surprisingly long time. Nothing special, but pleasant and inoffensive and can relieve you from stuffiness during a hot day .

This is a bit of a departure from most Aquatic fragrances. I wouldn’t call this really a ‘me too’ aquatic fragrance, but instead, I’d venture to say this is a bit more original. This has a sour, soapy top that most other aquatics do not have, and then it dries down to a base that is a little bit woodier than most aquatics. Issey Miyake is a victim of its own success. It’s very easily recognizable, and a vast number of people own it. I’ve had a few bottles, but ended up swapping all of them.

interesting at first....but it gets very boring...its almost difficult describing it....but it smells too fresh and fruity in a very synthetic way....

My advice about this one: if you first tried it on - and actually liked it. Buy the smallest bottle that you can find. I found that while I liked the smell, I actually became sick and got a headache after several times of using it. I am not sensitive and have never been sick of colognes, but this is the first one. I am not that great at identifying smells (probably making me a lousy cologne reviewer) however, there is one part of this cologne that seems to steamroll over the other pieces. I had no idea it had so many notes - I could not smell them. I think it might have been the vetiver. Anyway, you have been warned.

I bought this blindly when I read that it was a better version of Weekend by Burberry. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and now I'm left with a bottle of cologne I only mildly like.

I initially loved this, but sadly, the novelty soon wore off. It is remarkably persistent and now i can't even bear to smell it on someone else as it gives me a filthy headache........aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh!

A modern classic, complex, fresh and totally unique. The only problem is that it is so damn ubiquitious. Walk into any nightclub in London and the smell of this and Joop hits you hard enough to cause brain damage. In essence it has become the signature fragrance of the 'chav'. Horrible fate for such an originally classy and unique scent.

Girls may like it, and it may be in most every collector's homes. But wow, it gives me a headache! :-o I bought it because it seemed so popular at the time, and it did seems nice after my first spritz from a friend's bottle. However, the headache thing was intolerable, and I sold it. I think I'm one of the few dissenters here. :-o

I love this so much, there are so many great fresh layers and it reminds me of a trip to the beach!!! It gets a little boring after you wear it often though

The definite and absolute number one for a man who wants to seduce woman... a smell they adore, remember and desire. It is unbelievably long-lasting... once I played with my girlfriend's pen after putting some on my hands... later on she told me that she could feel my smell for a week...This smell becomes your signature... in my company my friends call me saying I was on their floor... they could smell me... What I like even more about this scent is that after a while of using it you don't smell it at all yourself. So easy on dosing... but it will never cause you a headache. As a man you don't have to love this smell... I didn't at first as well... but when I saw how women love it... well I don't smell it myself anymore... but I love it.

Many layers and levels work throughout the day for a totally interesting and invigorating experience. YES, Miyake!!!

I have to say this is a boring fragrance. Anticlimatic in every way. Every other boy wears it and that in itself is unappealling as well.

L'Eau D'Issey is a citrus fragrance unlike any other. The citrus notes are soured by the herbal and cypress notes, giving it a "salty" quality. It does smell extremely oceanic, like the Great Salt Lake if you've ever been there. The sour, salty quality in L'Eau D'Issey sometimes comes off smelling a little too strange and has given me headaches before. I rarely wear oceanic fragrances such as Issey and Kenzo, but I do keep them around for something a little different in the summer. Another downside to oceanic fragrances is that most women find them to be a turn-off, which may be an issue to some men. If you're looking for a nice, fresh aqua scent, look elsewhere.

Distinctive and pleasant enough when you get used to it but there is something about it that doesn't ring true . Maybe it's just becoming a little boring .

Miyake's concept for it was "scent of the pure water". Strong lemony citrus at the top knocks you down a bit but then develops into a mild fresh scent, "aristocratic Aqua di Gio". Long-lasting informal summer fragrance of a very good quality. I like it very much but feel a bit tired of it.

I like it very much! It's my summer fragrance of choice. It replaced the Givenchy Insensé Ultramarine I was wearing before. L'eau d'Issey has a beautiful dark woods base, with a fresh citrus top, with spices in-between.
