New West for Him is alleged to have introduced the melon/cucumber aquatic aromachemical calone to mainstream masculine perfumery. Given the over-reliance upon calone for “fresh” marine affects in designer scents (never mind soaps and shampoos,) of the past two decades, it’s tempting to deride New West for ushering a degeneracy from which men’s fragrances have yet to recover. Yet New West bears no resemblance to the banal, chemical aquatic scents and melon-flavored fresh fougères that followed it. Instead, it is a relatively dry, herbaceous-aromatic fragrance on a mossy foundation, wherein the calone note merely provides a contrasting moist chill. In fact, the play of geranium, pine, oregano, rosemary, and sage in New West is remarkably adept in evoking a sun-drenched California landscape. With its prevalent dry aromatics, pine, and moss, New West frankly smells more like Caron’s Yatagan (also inspired by an arid landscape,) than like any of the 1990s masculine aquatics! Though I wish the drydown was less dependent on a commonplace pencil shavings cedar base note, I still enjoy New West as a unique and characterful composition, and I’m pleased to see it back as part of the Aramis Gentleman’s Collection.

The ethylbenzodioxepinone in the top note is very subdued as far as I'm concerned; this is not an aquatic scent at all. I mostly get citrus and a bit of mint on the top; lavender, herbs and pepper in the center; and patchouli, woods, moss and musk in the dry-down. New West has the slight hint of leather in the base that is sort of the Aramis "house accord." It's like no other scent out there really, I like it quite a bit.

I just bought the relaunched New West last week. In Chicago, only Neiman-Marcus has it. It's pretty much the same as the original- an herbally/spicy/aquatic. It's still pretty unique. especially for a workplace-friendly fragrance. It's also relatively inexpensive at $48/3.4oz vapo. For sure worth checking out, and I agree, it's the kind of smell women really respond to.

I had a recollection of New West that had pushed it upon a pedestal with a handful of other fragrant rarities. Revisiting it again some fifteen years later, I realise that it was good for its time, but probably never remotely great.

It has a lightly herbal quality, adding considerable interest to the dominant cedarwood and sandalwood notes. There are no great surprises thoughout the New West experience, but I still very much enjoy having it around again.

This stuff was OK. I really couldn't understand what it was intended to be because the sillage and longevity were "lousy". I wore it for a short while in 1990 because it was given to me as a gift. Nothing to brag about here. Smelled "clean" for the 30mins you could actually smell it after application.......then disappeared like a "puff of smoke".

it's not bad, yes, but Basenotes chose, out of all the hundreds of great-smelling discontinued wonders in their catalouge, chose THIS? I mean, yeah, it smells nice, but it's nothing to write home about. a fresh, fruity-spicy scent (almost aquatic) is what I get.

some scents I recommend Basenotes attempt to bring back, since we're on the subject:

    Casual Friday
    Dunhill for Men (1934 original)
By for men by Dolce & Gabbana
    Nobile by Gucci

I fondly remember this from my early college days. This aroma always reminded me of the beach. Crisp, spicy and watery, they really should bring this back in all it's original glory.

This stuff is awesome. It is very different fom just about any and everything I have tried. I actually got a compliment from a female co-worker...after 6+ hours of applying this stuff!!!
If you can find it buy it, it is expensive but worth it. If you are a collector, or you just like specail frags, this is your cup of tea. I love it.
Don't miss Tuscany as well, also very well done.

Fits right in with the Aramis line yet is distinctive enough to stand out. A fresh, spicy scent with notes of anise and sandalwood. Great!

why is it that i didn't even find this wearable? at first scent its "ok", and then i found it to only get worse as it dried. I understand that this is at the opposite end of the spectrum from tuscany, and believe me i can appreciate all types of scents, but i loved tuscany and understand people's complaints for limited availibility, but i just don't get new west. i did not like it.

from 1990 I have been remembering that fragance. I used this parfum when I was a teeneger (it was a gift from my father, he liked Aramis, Tuscany n' Devin). I just only remember the goob fragance that it was. Que lastima que ya no este en produccion.

This fragrance is about as good as the show "Friends" is funny. There's a reason the former was discontinued and the latter was cancelled. Neither are bad; it's just that I have much better things to both wear and watch.

My signature scent. This is gorgeous. Fresh yet warm. When I found out this was discontinued I bought all eight bottles from my local pharmacy and even snagged a jar of Glacial Gel and Pacific Coastal Body Wash. Aramis had bloody better relaunch this as it is a classic up there with regular Aramis (which is bloody awful BTW), Polo and Drakkar Noir. It is a throwback to the eighties and evokes palm trees, blue sky and Miami Vice. The packaging is as iconic as the scent itself. Whoever made the decision to kill this should be strung up and horsewhipped.

I tried this out as my flat-mate was wearing it all the time. The babes just loved it and I gave it a whirl.Lo and behold my luck also changed for the better. I was a convert to this fragrance and wore it on informal evenings out in Hong Kong. Sadly it is increasingly hard to find and cheaper, more inferior but "in" fragrances with a bigger advertising budget now dominate its' place on the shelves. Do the bean-counters ever visit this website?

It is a very special perfume and distinguishing characteristic that it deserves a return. Same campaign would make for DK Men, Giorgio and Macassar

What's all the hype about to resurrect this particular scent. It's OK but thats it.I had some left over and I gave it to my 10yr.old son. When I started seeing all the hype I went back to see if I made A mistake in giving it away. I didn't. If they do relaunch, get rid of that cheesy bottle, and maybe A new name would'nt hurt. COLOGNE FORMERLY KNOWN AS ******##%&^^ or something.
