Like Connoisseur, I also got a "strange sickly, pungent, rotting garbage smell," only it was "synthetic" on top of that! This is what I call a "challenge frag." It challenges your olfactory limits, and whatever you do, do not smell it up close on the skin! So, try before you buy this one, and wear it more than once before you buy a full size bottle. You might like it, and that's fine, just make sure you actually do like it, and don't get convinced that you like it after one wearing. 31 August 2008

I am not waiting over an hour for the great Chanel drydown. This makes me and DH recoil in disgust. E. Platinum is fakey fresh and yuckie. It does not deserve to share the name of the great and powerful EGOISTE!!!! I am so angry that this is "the" E. that my local department stores and Sephora carry. Gag. I want a man to smell like a deep, sexy intellectural (aka EGOISTE!), not a piece gin soiled metal. 23 July 2008

Scubs off nicely once the sweetness becomes cloying. 19 April 2008

Too much! I only put on a little and I couldn't wash it away! Top notes were OK, but the drydown was enough to get my head pounding. Smoke to the max on the basenotes! 06 November 2007

Reading the reviews, people seem to get really excited about PE. When I tried it first at some drugstore, I thought I made a mistake en sprayed a women's perfume on my wrist...The only thing I could smell was alcohol and flowers, and it gave me a headache. Be sure to try before you buy; this is probably a smell you'll love or hate. (And I hate it...) 08 July 2007

Where in the world was the vetiver not in this one? My feelings for this fragrance is best summed up by the reaction to my grandmother when she smelled Platinum when I first sprayed it, "Wow, that smells like alcohol"! Indeed it does grandmom...indeed it does! 13 April 2007

I have no argument with the accuracy of the pyramid of notes provided by Chanel, although when wet, I'd interpret the scent to be based in gin. There's certainly no mistaking this as a scent intended for women. Actually, I got the feeling that PE would be worn by a man who was trying to assert his virility. I sought to fathom some redeeming quality in the drydown, but could not bring any to the surface. Of course, I am sampling this on female wrists, so it might develop better on those who bring a different balance of hormones to the experience. 19 October 2006

For all the hoopla I was severely dissapointed. Too smoky and synthetic smelling but it does have typical chanel longevity. I think I know why so many people think this is so great - they all smoke cigarettes because that is what it smells like. Too much smoke and B.O. dominating this concotion. 17 October 2006

A pale, pale reflection (at best) of the masterpiece that is Égoïste. That Chanel should have chosen to discontinue the good one while releasing (and aggressively marketing) the mediocre cousin is beyond me -- perhaps the execs there understand how many tasteless consumers there are in the U.S. of A. Give me my (original) Égoïste -- I'll keep the Platinum for re-gifting. 13 October 2006

I had a friend who smelled like this. He must have been wearing egoiste platinum! I thought he just had bad body odor. Seriously. I'm glad for him this isn't a permanent condition. 20 September 2006

I bought this for my hubbie and it smells okay at first. Seems it turns to soury and mildewy lavender after it dries down. Needless to say, I took it back. 16 April 2006

Uh, I don't get it. It smells like sour, dry nothingness on me. Apparently girls like this, but I haven't wanted to even wear it out of the house and see if that's true. In a way the dry woods note reminds me of a similar note in Ungaro III, but the difference is that Ungaro actually has some other elements to it which creates a balance. This is one of my least favorite scents ever. I can't find a single thing to enjoy about it. People need to forget what is "sophisticated" and started gettin' wit da program! It kind of reminds me of this time I tried to save a baby from a burning building but fell and the baby flew out of my arms into the flames. It was the worst day of my life. I can't think of any smells that day that remind of my fragrance, but that day, like this scent, completely blow. 24 February 2006

Platinum Egoiste is one of the most overrated fragrances I've ever owned (and promptly traded). The citrus notes are kind of nice but much too understated. The dominant, and truly overwhelming notes in Platinum are the lavender, petitgrain and clary sage which mix together into a strange sickly, pungent, rotting garbage smell that I just cannot handle. I really don't know what people see in this one. Be sure to try Platinum Egoiste before you buy it. 13 February 2004

Well made scent and very interesting. However this fragrance quickly dries down into a very smoky and VERY intensely woody scent. The wood is so overpowering in this scent it's not for me. 28 March 2003
