Reviews of L'Homme

Roger & Gallet is one of those old classic perfume houses that retroactively could be considered niche, since they are literally just perfumes and don't have the widest distribution, but at one point sat closer to a designer in price and availability. Other historic brands like Guerlain and Caron have done a better job of moving from the elite French perfume world into the mass-market, then slowly stretched themselves across both with a tiered catalog, but Roger & Gallet has stayed mostly a European mid-tier favorite, bought up by L'Oréal and had its distrubtion reigned in to mostly just Europe outside their most-famous selections or those small mom & pop perfume shops willing to import the deep catalog, so you won't see stuff like L'Homme (1982) for sale anymore in places like the US. During its heyday however, L'Homme competed fiercly in the mens aromatic fougère market, being of similar stripe to Paco Rabanne pour Homme (1973), Azzaro pour Homme (1978), Un Homme Charles Jourdan (1979), Worth pour Homme (1980), Floris Elite (1980), Yves Saint Laurent Kouros (1981), and others in the then-crowded field. Discontinuation has greatly narrowed this field of competition in the years since, but despite staying on the market while others have ascended to unicorn status or just been forgotten, Roger & Gallet L'Homme still hasn't made much of a name for itself outside collectors of obscure vintage men's fragrance. That isn't to say L'Homme isn't good, because it is in fact quite good and well-balanced for the genre, it just does nothing better than any of its ilk did back in the day, sitting somewhere between several more-distinct options of the time.

The opening of Roger & Gallet L'Homme should be very familiar to fans of classic masculines from the late 70's and early 80's , with bergamot, lemon, anise, and mint in the top immediately plunging the nose into a heart of dry lavender, orris/dihydromyrcenol soap, sage, and a bit of nutmeg. Ylang-ylang provides some indolic muskiness that imparts vibes similar to Kouros but much lighter (as there is no civet here), before a fairly standard fougère base of tonka, oakmoss, and patchouli settles in. There is some creaminess of sandalwood adding a nice rounded touch alongside some earthy vetiver and amber to make L'Homme feel a tad darker than something like Paco Rabanne pour Homme, but the overall theme is still very clean and well-structured like most things with an underlying wet shaving theme. Wear time is above average and projection, while "80's standard", is not going to nuke anyone's nostrils with moderate applications, since there isn't much besides the ylang-ylang that could really wrinkle a nose. If you like the overall makeup of Kouros but hated the animalics, this may be your answer, but to the untrained nose, this will smell like any other old "dad's cologne" lavender-focused fragrance. Best use for me is the office or casual day wear in moderate temperatures, and L'Homme could be a dumb reach daily driver for a guy preferring vintage styles and doesn't want a large cross-section of scents from this genre. Keep in mind this was from a house better known for classic eaux de cologne or traditional florals at the time, so they were likely doing "big picture" thinking with the composition. Put another way, this was the Montblanc Legend (2011) of its time, touching multiple bases and doing nothing special but also being well-made and doing no wrong.

The oldest bottles were square columns with round caps that came with little brochures exalting the praises of the stuff, while later productions are in the uniform round Roger & Gallet bottle most things still made by the house come in these days. Minor differences will occur with the oakmoss quotient and type of sandalwood note used being different, but the scent has aged about as well as any old fougère still on the market. Vintage puritans that worship all things 60's to 80's (and pretty much nothing else) will probably be a lot more hyped about this than anyone, and the kind of description they'd give you would be laced with superlatives like "masterpiece" or "nose candy", but the reality of it without those rose-tinted goggles is quite different. Roger & Gallet L'Homme is a very solid, smooth, and satisfying aromatic fougère that blends bits and bobs of what made more-distinct members of its class so great, creating a middleground between them that may be appealing for a guy who has them all and can't decide which one to wear, so he can effectively wear all of them at once by using L'Homme. In retrospect, this may have had a lot of signature scent potential since it does offer a sort of compromise and is an all-around a solid choice for clean, green, rich, and soapy shave foam-type masculine, but because it's so hard to find outside Europe or the UK, you'd have better luck just tracking down and layering bottles of Paco Rabanne pour Homme, Azzaro pour Homme, and Kouros. The original tag line for the smell in the brochure was "L'Homme est Rare", and at least for distribution, that much still proves true. Thumbs up.

This is pretty well done. It's not very exciting, but it's nice.

This genre is one of my favourites. On one end it has the very soapy Worth PH and on the other aromatics like Ebene, Azzaro, Tuscany. PRPH is somewhere in the middle closer to Worth.
L'homme is kinda best of both worlds, it has the soapiness of Worth and Aromatics of Ebene.
Very well constructed and blended.

Highly recommended.

A very nice classic sort of fragrance with some spice but I'm amazed that nobody has yet called out the similarity between this and Paco Rabanne Pour Homme as the two are remarkably similar. I would have to say that this has just a little more going for it out of the two.

If you like Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, give this a spin. I'm sure you'll like it.

“L'Homme est rare” was the tagline for this scent and while I do not think that the composition is especially rare (these notes are well used in masculine perfumery) it is rare for something to smell this good coming from a venerable French house specializing in solifore eaux and soaps. This cypress, woody scent has citrus and mint in its top notes, lavender, clove and ylang-ylang at its heart, and a clean woody base with vetiver, oak moss, sandalwood and patchouli. So good and good natured, this fragrance is largely overlooked—if you like fragrances like Azzaro Pour Homme, give this one a try. The ad campaign in Europe showed images of real, rugged men washing and shaving out of doors and there really is a connection to nature in this scent, the distillation of all that a man should be: freshly shaved and scented, but with a virile stubble already growing back. L’Homme developed its muscles and sinews from real life, not from hanging out in a gym. Very hard to find in the US, this is still a part of R&G’s worldwide lineup and well worth seeking out.

Roger & Gallet's hard to find "L'Homme" range really is the definitive scent of a 'chypre', or 'woody'.
Aside from citrus, the chypre / woody family of scents is probably the most loved fragrance family ever. Many don't even know they love woody scents.
This makes a great everyday office scent, very light and inoffensive. It's hard to over spray and just smells divine. A mix of woody notes and a touch of vanilla, this scent remains fresh and clean throughout. If you are a lover of Azzaro Pour Homme and would like something more up to date, you will find this one is right up your street.
I like to layer this scent with the after shave balm of the same company. Very light and comforting. Accept no imitations!
