The Dreamer by Versace is an amazing fragrance with character, performance, and appeal. I have often read reviews written on "The Dreamer" that cite its opening as being harsh, objectionable, and all-together inconsistent with the fragrance's further development. I personally find the top notes intense and sharp, but I do not think these notes are a large digression from the perfume's aim nor do I find them unattractive. It does take, perhaps, 10 minutes for the top notes to settle into a spicy, floral sweetness. This aroma, though it stays somewhat close to the skin, is potent and requires only a light breeze to be carried away into the nostrils of another. Therefore, over-applying will not get you the projection you desire, for it will only suffocate you. The key is to spray the fragrance in those key places on your skin that get exposure to local puffs of wind. This particular fragrance does not have much complexity or development other than the initial progression from the top notes, but the dry-down is comparable to Le Male by JPG in its sweet, powdery finish. Estimating the longevity to be around 8-10 hrs, I would say its staying power is very good. I would recommend this for daytime use, especially outdoors. I have found that it has the ability to come alive with some help from the outside air. I hope this helps.

Growing up in a Persian household, I was constantly surrounded by the scent of Persian spices simmering in the kitchen. There is one extremely popular spice, called sabzi, that incorporates parsley, leek, and fenugreek leaves, and sometimes a few other spices.

Well, Versace The Dreamer smells exactly like sabzi. I kid you not. It's as if I took a bottle of this spice, added water, shook it up, and sprayed it on myself. It's good to eat, but not to wear.

The opening spray smells nothing like the dry-down. It opens smelling as if you just sprayed gasoline on yourself. It's "chokingly" awful. It takes about 30 minutes or so for the base scent to develop (the sabzi smell). I have never come across a fragrance that transforms into something utterly and completely different from top to bottom like The Dreamer does.

I thought about purchasing this for my father or brother as a gag gift, just to hear them say "Why did you give me this? Why the hell would I want to walk around smelling like sabzi all day?" But alas, this is too expensive. :P

There is only one way to describe this scent:

SEX! SEX! SEX! SEX!

Sex in a bottle... Believe me, I speak from experience. Synthetic? Yes, but who does really want to smell exactly like tree bark, violets, or lemon here? Sometimes man-made can be a masterpiece, and this is exactly that.

This is Versace. At its best.

The top notes are too harsh and the drydown is very long lasting and good , but I was expecting much more from this.

For those who don't like this, I suggest trying Cuba Gold (if you like the idea of a vanilla/tobacco frag). Won't cost you much and it doesn't have that "synthetic" top note issue that Dreamer does, but it does have decent longevity and sillage.

Tobacco is what I get from this and I like it alot. I purchased this during the winter months of 2001 and was taken in. There was a warmth to the scent that stays with you and the sillage is great. This one definitely brings back memories and I may go back to it again soon.

I agree with the majority. The top notes are a bit sharp, but the dry down is very good! It lasts a long time on me and though I prefer this as an evening cologne I can still get away with wearing it to work in light amounts. Like many have already said...it just gets better with time!

i discovered this about 10 years ago when i was in college and fell in love with it. i am a woman, but i find this scent to be very unisex, personally. it's not too masculine nor too feminine. it honestly sits right there in the middle. it's crisp and tobacco-y and i love it. it was my signature scent for years, and now i only wear it occasionally, but it continues to be a favorite.

I wore this once to an exciting day at the museums. That's not being sarcastic, I love museums, however, this cloying scent just depressed the mood. I'm not blaming the whole day on it but as a subjective matter I won't like this. SLightly spicy with vanilla, it lingers around a while. I don't enjoy this but I like its woody base with tobacco. I don't think this has stood the test of time... even if it's only a decade old.

I've only worn this for a few years but I'm glad a woman I worked with told me to try it. As with most people I agree the top notes start off strong but once it settles down it is absolutely wonderful and the drydown is absolutely one of the best around. I've had people, even other men tell me they don't like wearing fragrances but have asked what I am wearing because they love the smell of this. This was after 2 or 3 hours of my having the fragrance on, not at the beginning though. I will wear this continually for it is one of my favorites and is my favorite by this fragrance house.

The dreamer is wonderful. If you like le Male and wear it well, the Dreamer should work for you also. Beware the strong gin & tonic tarragon topnotes, but the middle and base are wonderful wonderful wonderful. a little is enough

My review is for the "average Joe or Jane" like me, who is not trained to distinguish between the various notes. I almost skipped buying this because of what turned out to be a very exagerated review that this fragrance smells like pipe tobacco ashes. What a mistake that would have been. The Dreamer is simply awesome. The base notes I picked up, if anything, are tobacco flower and amber. There is nothing in this that smells like tobacco smoke or ashes. If there is, it is so faint as to be virtually indetectable by us average Joes and Janes. Nothing in the top notes caused me any problem either and there are couple of fragrances that do. The Dreamer is a very masculine, refined scent that smells like nothing I've ever used. It is how I imagine a well groomed man of some affluence should smell. I think it is suited for a romantic evening or anytime you'd like to make a great impression.

I started my fragrance collection just 3 short months ago and already have 30 plus of the very highest rates ones here on base notes. You should consider the Dreamer. In my opinion, it is outstanding and one of the best fragrances a man can own.

It should be called "The Sleeper" and not "The Dreamer" because a lot of people are likely to "sleep" on this cologne because of the top notes.

My first couple of sprays of The Dreamer resulted in my leaving the room in a desperate attempt to spare my nostrils lol The longer it sits, the better it gets. I actually didn't like it at first because the top notes were so sharp, so overwhelming. As time passed, the fragrance became softer, more amicable. I could deal with it. And the "What's that smell" weren't accompanied with a look of nausea but rather, looks of delight.

I love the bottle, as it is aesthetically pleasing and functional, but thought the box looked kind of cheesy (read: cheap).

I like tobacco smell so i put it on whenever i see on a shelf and enjoy sniffing on my wrist. On meit smells like it does in the bottle; a lot of tobacco with a bit iris and amber; nice but too masculine for a lady. Last week i had my husband next to me when i saw it on a perfumery shelf and while putting on me i give him a try. I cannot buy myself such a masculine fragrance but would be great if he liked and bought one i thought. but no chance. On him it was awful. No tobacco no amber. Just a disturbing intricate smell you find in an old pharmacy lab. Disappointed... The conclusion; do not buy it without trying or buy as a gift....

I really REALLY liked this on first spray. It's floral nature becomes quite feminine on me-- not what I would prefer. Though, I don't care because I really enjoy sniffing this frag.

I think maybe I'll try spraying this on my girlfriend to see how it sits there. If that doesn't work, I'll still wear this when I'm alone...

Not sure with this one. I like the warmth of the basenotes, but it takes quite a long time to get there and even then it's a little cloying. I would prefer to wear Cristobal PH, when I'm wanting something sweet and sexy.

I can imagin to wear it mysef, as it is smooth, even if it is strong. A very interesting frag! I hope it will become a classic!

I used to like this and I have worn it many times, but those times have gotten fewer and fewer along the way to never. There’s something about the top notes that I am no longer comfortable with; there is a note in it that is quite synthetic, but it’s not that exactly; it could also be the combination of lavender and tarragon, but whatever it is, it became more and more annoying each time I wore it. The note doesn’t annoy me to the extent of my wanting to scrub it off; it’s just that I would rather spend my time smelling something better—which would be just about anything. Once the top notes are finished, Dreamer gets better. The heart notes are very nicely floral augmented by tobacco—a very enjoyable accord. And the drydown provides a balanced use of the tobacco in an excellent woody base. Dreamer used to be on my almost-a-favorite list, but nowadays I really don’t enjoy it.

Versace Dreamer is definitely not for everyone. The top notes can get very intense and even irritating but the die down is well worth it. This scent should be well thought out as wearing it certain places could get you some unsavory looks. A sophisticated scent for a a sophisticated man. Smells nothing like a 2 dollar bar of soap

Forget the name, this is good stuff! All smokers whould buy this as it accentuates the odour of cigs very well. Dry, sweet, tobacco, great longevity, awesome especially in the winter. ONe of the best I have tried, it doesn't pretend to be anything, unlike many frags nowadays that are really for women but marketed for men. I can smell sweet without smelling feminine. Nice.

This is one of the most intriguing scents I've ever smelled. Right from the first spritz you know you're in for an eccentric journey. Initially off-putting, but after a few minutes my nose was glued to my wrist. Herbal, woody, slightly sweet but not in a candy-ish way - there's also a note in there that's a little offensive, but I like that! Unlike other reviewers, I do not find this overly sweet at all. If you like L'Eau Bleue D'Issey you must try Dreamer.

I truly wanted to love this cologne. And the bottle is so beautiful...

But there is something about this cologne that agitates me and gives me a headache after an hour...this particular element of The Dreamer smells overbearingly sweet. I wouldn't say that that element smells effiminate - I could never imagine a woman wearing this cologne - but the best way I can put it, is that this element is pulled of very well by metrosexual dandies and gay men. But I wouldn't say this this cologne is especially suited to dandies of gay men.

The smell itself is nice enough - but there is just something about it that really agitates me, and I can't really figure out what it is. I tried to palm it off onto a very close gay friend of mine at work, but he found that particular element/note unerving as well...

Perhaps its the lily-orris-amber-synthetic tonka accord. Those notes seem to dominate too much.

Otherwise, I like this cologne as much as is possble, factoring in my other issues with it.

I wish I could love it, but neither myself nor any of my male friends can pull it off at all.

P.S. No matter what this note pyramid says here on basenotes, I must insist that it should include "synthetic tonka".

Cheers.

I tried this before buying and thought it was worth getting a bottle. It seemed sophisticated and different. As soon as I put it on at home, though, I was disgusted. The tobacco note is just too strong. I feel like I've rolled around in pipe ashes. It has excellent longevity, but whether that's a good thing depends on your feelings for the scent.

The top note assault is gag worthy but after 10 minutes or so it dries down and mellows into a beautiful scent. Longevity is excellent and I received many compliments with this one. The Dreamer has garnered a permanent position in my collection from now on.

This fragrance is one of a kind. At first bitter, sour, later a bit soapy, with a lingering sweetness that finds its roots in the base, I receive mental images of raisins, dried fruits and berries, dry, sweet tobacco perhaps soaked in tea, and wilting white flowers. It at once delivers clarity and darkness, clenliness and maroon-y richness. Exquisitely intoxicating!

I want to love this stuff. Mainly because the bottle is so great. And the name--how could THIS frag have ended up as "The Dreamer"? Could it be that I am not a Dreamer? The lily note here is like volatile Kool Aid to this poor daybound nose. It's candy-sweet, maybe to match the dreams of a younger man. But don't even the young dreams of late capitalism smell a bit of blood and gasoline?

This one is on my list of all time favorites! The tobacco is what makes this one hot to me. Women love it and that's all that matters! i rank this one up there with Silver Mtn water, D&G PH, Polo, TM Colonge. Did not really like it the first time i tried it but I kept going back to my wrist and before I knew it, I was in love.... Give it a try and you'll love it!

The name sound extremely promising, but the outcome is, in my opinion, only a moderate success. A certain herbal quality with medical minty notes, followed by a gourmand, even slightly liquorice-smelling spicyness. Smells, in my opinion, as a more casual, more odern and youthfully reworked version of a Mediterranean scent( Teorema Uomo?, 1881?...) made to appeal to a more mainstream and less mature and conservative target.

After going back and forth on this one for months, I'm finally going to say I like it. Oddly, it reminds me of a mix between two of my least favorite scents: Le Male and D&G PH. Plus some florals. And it works! It has Le Male's minty-sweet and slightly synthetic opening - but that's gone pretty quickly. Alingering light sweetness remains to pretty the tobacco up and makes it more tolerable than D&G's wretched take on the note. The florals provide a consistent backdrop for this interesting evolution. This is the only Versace fragrance I like at all.

The dreamer is like a dream. I've yet to come across a scent as provocative as this. Transparent and modern yet very deep at the heart, it's magic. The similarities to D&G ph are there but the dreamer is not a mere scent, it is poetry. Rather romantic one, I would say.

The top is like liquerish. I don't like the liquerish candy, but this frag is _slightly sweeter and I like it, but almost as an aquired appreciation.

30 min later the middle and the base are oriental warm. Definately still manly. More generic at this stage, and similar scnets to V man / D&G.

I like it, but I could see where I could get tired of this frag as the top is very commited to liquerish.

By comparison, black Jeans is a lot more unique, dark asphalty and refined. V man is more generic, but more easily tolerated. The Dremer is a pretty good compromise between acceptance and being unique, but I would try before buying.

It goes on very bright and over powering. Personally, I find the olfactory rush quite thrilling. Similiar to the one I get after spraying on Givenchy Gentleman. Of course the notes are different - but they announce themselves with the same assertiveness.
The tobacco is present from the first moments until the Dreamer fades - hours and hours later.
Luca Turin was very excited about this one and thought it was revolutionary for its day. I agree, but perhaps it is just a synthetic recreation of vanilla tobacco?

In a word: Heavenly.

The pungent topnotes, which probably are responsible of all those "synthetic trash" reviews, are not off-putting for me, it's more like they... add personality. On my skin (or according to my nose) they disappear in minutes after application anyway.

What is left is a delicious drydown, which does remind me of Lolita Lempicka au Masculin. I don't know the common ingredient or if there even is any, but there is a definite connection. Dreamer is perhaps a bit more masculine and therefore more usable in general. (I adore both.)

sensual intense fresh spicy sexy
manly, yet unisex... ?...The Dreamer is everything, it seems.

Very nice strong but reffined scent. I am not a smoker, but I'm sure that this one works perfect on a smoker too. It is a little too formal, but it is cosy, comfortable if applied very gently to gently. One spritz is surely enough to feel elegant.

I bought The Dreamer after seeing it at a clothing store, then read the reviews and bought it as a blind buy. I thought it was the worst thing I have ever smelled. I only sprayed it on once. 2 years later, I asked a friend in class what she likes, and she said she bought her boyfriend a bottle a few weeks back. I figured something was wrong here to I tried it again. Who knew that under those disgusting top notes (for me atleast) would hide such a unique and wonderful experience. A lesson well learned with a great reward!

One of my favorite designer fragrances (along with Cuiron). Unlike many designer frags that ride that line of boring, aquatic predictability (Yes, Aqua di Gio and Miyake, I'm talking to you), this one has an added kick that is unexpected but enjoyable. Also, I think the packaging is gorgeous (who doesn't love something smattered with the Greek-key and Versace Medusa symbol???) Longevity and sillage are great as well, as others have mentioned that one has to be careful so as not to knock everybody down around you.

This is Bliss. The Juniper and tobacco notes stand out on my skin and the combo is perfection.
On me the topnotes are fine, and The Dreamer never gets very weird. I LOVE this one.
I trashpicked a half bottle of The Dreamer from a friend who's husband had moved on ( but left a lot of stuff in a box at the curb. ) I used it up pretty quickly and happily bought a replacement bottle. This in in my top 5 of "men's" fragrances that I wear. Tarragon might just be the 'weird' note for some people, I feel if you like Tarragon on food, you will like it in this scent. The Dreamer is easy for me to live with.

Wow, I usually stay away from florals, but perhaps I should only stay away from feminine florals? If this is a masculine floral I like them.
I don't get a harsh topnote at all, I get a very soft and sweet topnote, almost sweet enough to be gourmand, like A Men or MAT Very Male, but with a floral character. I find it hard to explain why it seems so traditionally masculine when it's so very very sweet. Perhaps it's a certain minty or anise-like coolness and a sort of boozy note that does it?
It doesn't seem to change much but perhaps I still get the top/middle note after a couple of hours. It might be the almost creamy sweetness of the tobacco basenote too though.

It took some time for me to like this cologne. At first the top notes were just too much for me to handle. I literally went and tried to wash it off. I didn't give up on it though. The beauty of this cologne is definitely the dry-down. It is amazing, albeit a good 20 minutes after applying before you can realize this. Staying power is very impressive. I still pick up hints of it while i'm in the shower. I'm not sure about the warnings for over-applying. I usually need two sprays to the wrist and two to the neck, while Dolce "By" I normally stop at just two to the wrist and use them to apply to the neck. Overall Dreamer is a great cologne, but I still hold Dolce "By" in higher respect. I have yet to be complimented outright with Dreamer, while "By" has brought several compliments and a literal attack on my neck by a complete stranger.

Reminds me of a cross between Joop and LeMale, with just a bit of lily thrown in, and perhaps a tad more tobacco.

All that said, DO apply with ease, as too much of this tasty stuff can easily overpower every nose within a 50 mile radius.

On my (female) skin, the juniper and some strong orange/mandarin and high pitched musk notes mix into a cloying mess that reminds me of Goo Gone (a solvent for removing gluey guck made with orange oil and something like acetone. Great product! Doesn't smell too good.). These top notes just do not let go, and nothing else in the composition comes through.

Ahh, what a beautiful fragrance. What a beautiful name. What a beautiful bottle. The box is ugly though... Anyway, the top notes on this baby are not for everyone. The florals in the beginning may seem harsh for some, but mellow for others (like me). The base is where the magic radiates from, and that sweet pipe tabacco smell just intoxicates you senses. It lasts and the sillage is amazing as well. Masculine and sophisticated in every sense of the words. It fits perfectly with an oversized leather couch. You may say, I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope some day you'll join us. Then the world will live as one.

dreamer is like a beauty and the beast. the top notes are so harsh that I can't stand it. with some patience, dreamer morphs into something beautiful.many say this is similar to d&g ph with the tobacco note but to me they're not. dreamer has a wet tobacco smell that's been sitting in a hot barn. then later its a almost like a sweet and natural body odor that I love. a scent that changes on your skin which takes about an hour to turn into somethin wonderful.

The top notes are indeed pungent and hard to bear for some...and they last for like 2 hours. The drydown is decent, with a smooth tobacco base. Longevity is pretty good.

Because of the tenacious and wretched top notes (which I cannot stand at all) I wont be wearing this anytime soon ! There are other scents out there which do tobacco far better.

Dreamer is amazing. I think it takes about an hour before it smells really good, but when it does, look out. Has to be the most intense and different-smelling scent, even more than A*Men. I love it! Pretty cheap on Ebay. Actually most colognes sell for so much less on Ebay. Take a look.

I'll agree, the top and middle notes of this fragrance are so pungent (in an intense flowery way) that it almost makes me dizzy. The longevity of this fragrance is amazingly good, and it therein where the value lies. The drydown is much more mellow and has an intersting blend of notes that I've never smelled before. Again, interesting, but not great, and nothing to really write home about. On some people, their body chemistry really brings these bottom notes alive, and on others, it is dreadful. Neutral review from me as you need to try it on yourself, and you must tolerate the flowery headache the first 30-45 minutes after application.

A very sift and gentle tobacco fragrance. Not rich pipestyle tobacco, but the actual leaf, sawying in a sunny breeze. Not much for sillage, but very comforting and surprisingly refreshing for something so sweet. Not necessarily formal, IMO, but tending in that direction.

The drydown is the only part of this scent that I like. There's something in the top and middle notes that reminds me of a Sharpie (permanent felt marker). I like tobacco notes, but this one comes off as smelling very synthetic and harsh. If you could endure the first hour of this, then you're left with a nice powdery drydown of vanilla sweetness. But sometimes I just don't want to wait that long.

I was ready to rob, beg, or steal to get this scent, its fresh, floral, spicy, and yes, "dreamy" smell evoked a lot of sensations, and unmistakably different than what was out there when it came out. Any guy shouldn't pass on this scent if they truly believed in some sort of romance!

WOW! What can i say, it's dark, moody, almost gothic and has lots of tobacco and the drydown is a bit sweet as well, it might be the amber. Very sexy. I love it! Definitely my favorite Versace.

The floral notes are well balanced with the dry tobacco and tarragon notes. Extremely masculine. Grat longetivity and projection power, use with a light hand.

This may be the most intersting fragrances to me. First off, the package is one of the best I've seen, and the bottle is also cool looking. The fragrance itself took me quite a few testings. To be honest, I don't care for the top notes much, but I find myself continually smelling myself after application. Also, the amber in the drydown really comes out on me, making a WONDERFUL finish for the day. The lasting power is also quite strong. A winner in my book.

Yet another awful fragrance from the Versace line. How do they keep putting these out? This is an awful synthetic smelling blend of mint toothpaste and tobacco. Yes, its as awful as it sounds. Powdery to the extreme. Its nauseating.

This is one of my few "mens" fragrances - I generally avoid those cliches. Dreamer is a fantasy carnival, the scent of cotton candy mixes with flowers from a nearby field and the spices from the shish-kabob stand along with everything else. It is like nothing else really, and standing on its own, it is a fantastic franrance that evokes strong reactions: you either love it or hate it. I love it!
