I don’t know how much I can take of this opening — it is so…unconventional. I get four notes together: a little of the sweet black currants, an awful lot of the sharp green tomato leaf, not enough of the lemony verbena, and a tiny bit of the smooth green fig leaf. Until now I have always loved tomato leaf as a note in a fragrance, but this tomato leaf is matched with the verbena, and I’m a bit concerned about the combination. I’m not going to condemn it because this is not necessarily a permanent dislike, it’s the sort of accord that I might wake up to some day and find that I love it. It takes a long time for the tomato leaf to disappear, and when it does, the smooth fig note kicks in and the fragrance becomes rather freshly elegant: There it stays through its light drydown; white musk just doesn’t have enough presence for me, but I have to admit that, in spite of its reticence, this is an excellent drydown. The longevity of the fragrance is poor. Eau de Verveine’s position on the masculinity – femininity scale leans definitely towards the feminine side. It is sophisticatedly – freshly feminine. It’s unique and creative – I think this is an excellent fragrance…but only after the tomato leaf has lost most of its power.
