Democracy's opening salvo of lavender and citrus is ever so faintly reminiscent of Jicky (without the civet) and suggests that the scent will develop into a very traditional fougère.

What a nice surprise it is, then, when a rich, smoky leather accord common to several other of Ayala's scents (including Rebellius and Espionage) drifts in and sends Democracy in an entirely different direction. The lavender/bergamot accord remains dominant, but the base shifts back and forth between oakmoss and a smoky, leathery oriental blend of labdanum, amber, and rose. Democracy is gratifyingly complex, and the only criticism I can lodge is that it's far-ranging development progresses very quickly, then vacates after no more than three hours. A worthy achievement nonetheless!

This reminds me of Ambre Sultan without the medicinal. This, again like all Ayala's perfumes, is high quality and amazing. One of the few fragrances with juniper berry that agrees with me. The lavender is strong and supportive. Great!

Sour, then sweet. Orange zest melts into a deep, honeyed amber with great staying power. Delicious. After I wore this all afernoon, I had to go raid the jar of marmelade.
