Hmm - quite nice but not as good as Pure Coffee. Pure Malt, by comparison, is both lighter and heavier. In theory it's lighter in both its (boozy) opening, which is certainly thinner than the somewhat opaque wall of P.C. -- as well as in its closing, which hews closer to the original A*Men (sugary) rather than the bitter, creamy, patchouli-heavy and complicated close of PC.

But I define "light" and "heavy" based not only on technical attributes but also on the situations in which I can wear the scent. And it's here that PM ends up being heavier than PC because it's sweeter. For me, this really is a cool-weather scent. And, unlike PC, the boozy opening hangs around for a long time (compared to the somewhat volatile coffee notes of PC). The booze is also almost more cognac than whiskey; it's a rich, thick, woody, caramelly cognac note with maybe a hint of rhum. This is, by a considerable degree, the booziest scent I have ever worn -- others like Burberry London pale in comparison (and if you thought Escada PH had a cognac note, wait till you smell this one). It's the only one where I'd be afraid of someone thinking I'd been going heavy on the bottle, as the other notes are relatively sheer and play a definite second fiddle to the cognac.

The warning on the box not to drink the brew within proves to be quite prophetic - this one's almost too gourmand for its own good. Still, gets a thumbs up for originality and for being a sweet scent without resorting to vanilla and amber cliches. Keep at it, Mr. Huclier.

This is my favorite of the Men series although I haven't tried Pure Coffee. I take wearability into consideration when rating fragrances and in the end I rate this best, B*Men is second, and A*Men is last. Wearability aside, this is still the best smelling frag of the 3. Its creamy like the other 2 but its not as sweet as either, which I find is the killer of A*Men (its just too much). I don't know what the note is but there is a really sharp note in this that really go all the way to my stomach and to me this element just makes the fragrance so much better. If you like A*Men give it a shot, if you like B*Men more than A*Men (like me), then you should really really try this.

Overall a unique scent. The first spray gives you a great whiff of whiskey. I just wish it lasted longer. My issue, like Pure Coffee, is neither has the longevity of A or B Men. I have tried mixing it with lotion to retain moisture on my skin and add a layering effect, but it really hasn't help. Either way, the scent is very pleasant and great for a cool night.

I was given so many samples of this I could fill a bottle, also bought an atomizer and they filled it with this. Anyway I love this, to me it' unique. I have to many colognes and may add this one, it's that good. Top notch "main stream" scent. This and dolce the one for men are my favs in this price range, really they are both just awsome.

1st review on BN but it’s the way I see it.

Having felt the buzz of AMen Pure Malt I thought I would give it a go while @ Nordstrom a few days ago.
I own the original AMen and like it - for certain occasions - but have a little trouble waiting for the ultimate drydown
to get past what I term 'overtly sweet' effect. I was hoping the Malt or Coffee versions would speed the sweet spot up for me a little.
It does that alright & leaves the vanilla virtually outta the picture on initial app. It’s replaced, however, with a fairly sharp
Oak note that is VERY similar to Hermes elixier de merveilles. As a matter of fact, if you were to immediately deeply huff the initial
application the oak will just reach right up & bite you for your efforts & it stays pretty strong for a good 15-20 minutes.

Then things begin to mellow out some and begins to morph into a lighter version of TFord Tobacco/Vanille. What appears
to be a tobacco note comes across as more of a smoke/tobacco (not to be confused with tobacco smoke) as opposed to the
tobacco leaf/flower accord of TFord TV. It isn’t a bad thing just different enough to be different - but only a little.

We then dropped down to the obligatory vanilla note & this is where Pure Malt started to differentiate itself from TFord TV.
The vanilla ‘tone’ is lighter than TV but has this added earthiness that’s hard to describe. Just may be the AMen aging in oak
casks that does the trick. Actually aging this is a used malt whiskey cask would truly be novel. I’ll definitely be spiking Pure Malt
with a little castoreum just to see what happens with a touch of leather.

IMO : is AMen Malt worth having …. YEP, especially if you want your vanilla fix a little twisted @ half the price of TFord.
Does it replace TFord TV - NO WAY. Why ? Different ways different days that’s why. Giving them BOTH a thumbs up over here.

Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Malt

When I saw the name of this for the first time my mind went to the candy store as I thought of malted milk balls. My mind should've gone to the liquor store and the single malt scotch aisle. The malt in the title refers to the malt used to make scotch and this 2009 follow-up to the successful limited edition A*Men Pure Coffee is as smooth as a 25-year old scotch. Most flankers take the approach of keeping one part of the parent in place and as it was in Pure Coffee in Pure Malt the A*Men base of patchouli, chocolate and coffee is where this scent ends. If you don't like that base, stop reading because it is identical to A*Men and nothing that comes before it will change that. Pure Coffee was good because the intense coffee note at the top helped tamp it down in the base and made the chocolate stand out more, to me. In Pure Malt the titular note has the same effect in making an aspect of A*Men stand out more. The top of Pure Malt is as advertised rich peaty malt. You smell the boozy character bolstered by the oaky barrel it is aged in. Then as this prgresses the caramel that is always present in A*Men is accentuated and brought to the fore by the Malt accord. It totally makes the heart of this different than either version of A*Men that have come before. It bears some similarity to B*Men but I much prefer this boozy beginning which leads beautifully into the caramel before the patchouli, chocolate and coffee come in to remind you of this scent's parentage. This is an ideal boozy gourmand and it is also going to be a nice summer scent as it comes off lighter than A*Men on me as a whole. This makes the second flanker of A*Men to be, what I consider, an improvement on the parent. Rarely is the sequel better than the original but these A*Men flankers are proving the exception to the rule.
