01 Nomad (2009)

Wonderful. Fantastic. Very well balanced. Deep, sweet, mystical and charming. Reminds me of a old bookstore with incense.

Nomad opens horrifyingly sweet with an huge dose of heliotrope / tonka beans and vanilla sugar surrounded by an almost strident citrus note (bergamot) or meybe lemongrass (?). It immediately reminded me of a "just out from the hoven" creamy lemon cake.

Fortunately, the initial sweet blast is very efemeral and the fragrance move to a woody, (sort of) oriental territory. The gourmandic aspect it's still there but it's now less cloying, more integrated and blended with woods. In this phase Nomad is definitely more pleasant but still lacks in something (give a test to the very similar Biehl Parfumkunstwerke EO01 and you'll get what I mean).

Overall, Nomad smells more designer than niche, and it would be fine if just half-priced.

Good woody scent for men

What a wonderful scent! It is resolutely woody, in a comforting and warm manner. I had a slight moment of panic with a very brief vanilla-like note at the very beginning. Even then, the lovely wood notes tempered and blended so well that -- amazingly -- I appreciated those vanilla-like notes. Those who know my tastes will recognize that is really saying something.
Other aspects of the first phase... Good, bright juniper notes and a nice peppery 'bite'. The scent is smooth and attractive. Briefly, a vetiver-like note appears (bright and grassy) and also something like lemon rind. In the middle, the scent is rich (even opulent) but never heavy. Creamy sandalwood and deep cedar are very well done. In the last phase, a warm woody note just purrs along. Completely satisfying!

Well, this is boring. Just a year earlier (2008), a very similar fragrance was released by Dolce & Gabbana, called The One.


What you get here is cedar, bergamot, sandalwood, juniper berries, a faint musk, and the tonka bean that accounts for Nomad's borderline gourmand vanilla note. Although not listed, I'm detecting the very trendy grapefruit note (perhaps it is bergamot?) that is one of the key players in D&G's The One.

All of this goes by in about 2 to 3 hours.

As a newcomer to the niche game, I would expect something much more interesting rather than this Nomad that smells like a designer fragrance disguised as "niche."

Save your $110, and find something else.

In reading the reviews I see that my opinion is nothing new. This is a nice woody fragrance, but yes, it is missing that 'punch'. I do think this is more of a man's scent, but if I had to profile what sort of man would wear it I picture this: someone conservative, a bit on the boring side, probably watches 'Friends' reruns after work, drinks domestic beer and doesn't shag unless he has a commitment.
