Reviews of L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme Sport

Sometimes I ask myself "What's this life for?" when I see a multitude of flankers spewed out by a house when most of them smell nothing like what they're flanking at all, and could have just the same been their own unique releases with unique bottles or at least labelling. Calvin Klein has this problem, and so does Ralph Lauren. To a degree, Christian Dior has developed this same neurosis, they just are given a pass most of the time while the other two are not since it is Dior after all, and the quality of their compositions often excuses most things. Issey Miyake seems bitten by the same bug, but unlike the other houses, they seem to focus soley on the L'Eau d'Issey (1992) and L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme (1994) lines, with the latter having a whopping 25 seasonal, limited, and permanent flankers of the masculine L'Eau alone (as of this review). To such untiring madness, many a dedicated colognoisseur just turns on the tunnel vision and focuses on the original pillar that started it all. Jacques Cavallier penned that original ultra-dry ozonic ode to Japanese yuzu, and that scent itself is indeed fresh and vibrant enough to be a sport scent on its own, which begs the question of why this exists. I doubt we'll get an answer other than "why not?" from the house itself, but at least Jacques Cavallier returned to pen this as well, cementing some quality control. Mr. Cavallier has had his hands on several influential 90's and 2000's aquatics, ozonics, and freshies, including the staple Acqua di Giò Pour Homme (1996) and Rochas Aquaman (2002), the latter to which this bears a passing resemblance. The joy in wearing L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport (2012) comes not in what it claims to be, but what it ends up being, which is a slightly sweeter, rounder, and de-fanged L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme that feels more casual.

The opening of L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport comes from a dry yuzu much like the original, but the yuzu takes a huge backseat to the slightly-sweeter grapefruit accord here, with traditional bergamot replacing the mandarin to rid this sport version of any lingering juiciness so the heart can come in faster to form the character of the scent. Overall, this sport effort is a less complex offering, free of the verbena and multitudes of dry dusty spice and aromatics that give the original it's grayish white bleakness, moving into just nutmeg returning from the original and a slight leather note. The leather is that parched kind most modern fragrances sporting a leather note tend to play with (outside Tom Ford's shoe leather note or the isobutyl quinoline tannery leather Dior is still playing with all these years later in their premium lines), but it really just melds into vetiver before the base comes on. The green citrus and leather melange fold into a slight ambroxan note which is livened with cedar and cut with some Iso E Super into a glowy, dialed-back proxy of Bleu de Chanel (2010), which is not unexpected considering when this was released. I don't really get a ton of "sport" from this outside of the rubberized cap and blue stripe that scream aftermarket steering wheel grips from Auto Zone, but that's a good thing. Wear time is decent enough for a hot day, which is where this shines best, and sillage is moderate unless worn in the cold, where it dies with a whimper. Fans of the original may not like this sport version much, but folks into the modern fresh scene sure will, and it feels well-composed even if not groundbreaking by any measure.

Coming from a house so crowded with inane flankers, it's easy to pass on L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport without so much as a sniff, and in a world with so many fresh scents all vying for our cash, sporty or otherwise, this is but a grain of sand on a huge beach of samey options that feel more like obstacles in the way of real perfume discovery. I wouldn't run out and get this myself, but I have moderately enjoyed my time with L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport, and would rather see a personable and utterly harmless like this than a totally thoughtless cash-in with zero personality or redeeming value cluttering up shelf space. In the case of the former, this is something to look into even if it most likely proves fruitless, while the latter is what often tends to be the case with "sport" scents which smell so uninspired as to be actually banal to the nose, vapid to the point of irritating like a flavor-of-the-month pop tune played over the store radio when shopping for groceries. Issey Miyake is guilty of making such insipid catalog padding, which luckily this avoids becoming, even if I am still questioning the reason this exists despite mildly approving of L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport as a solid scent impulse buy for a casual user without the interest in sampling around. This is just another fast food fodder fragrance (4F for short), but like the occasional jaunt into a McDonald's when they've just finished a new batch of burgers and fries, L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport can be rather satisfying, if lacking memorability. This gets a thumbs up, but barely.

A pleasant flanker of the legendary L'Eau d'Issey, though its necessity is not certain.

Anyhow...on its own merits, Homme Sport is a minimalist scent that doesn't smell so. The opening is an active lifestyle friendly hit of citrus, leading to the subtle nutmeg heartnote and finishing up with a starchy woody-green sensation, thanks to the vetiver and cedar.

It's pleasant and wearable for active "sport" occasions, but can be worn as a casual daytime scent as well. L'Eau d'Issey pour Homme Sport is interesting and polarizing, but is it a necessary fragrance in the world of men's colognes, generally speaking? Hmmm....

Buying this scent was one of my more regrettable blind buys earlier on in my fragrance collecting journey. I purchased a 6.8 ML...I know i know...What was I thinking right? Who blind buys a 6.8 bottle of LDS? The same crazy guy who would blind buy a 6.8ml bottle of VERSACE Eros...Boy was I way more impulsive when it came to purchasing frags. Needless to say I still have a huge portion of this scent left over (Eros as well...LOL) and have begun using it as an air freshener. And to be honest Im not sure if I like my space smelling like it either.

I have to admit my appreciation for the original LD has waned over the years. It was at one time one of my favorites and now I can't get the smell of cat urine out of my mind when i smell it. My main issue with the Sport version is that while it doesn't retain every element of the original it definitely has the original's cat urine accord. This scent is toned down but still very present. Having that element in a scent meant for "sport" would mean wearing a scent which smells of urine when your body temp is at its highest. Im not sure if that's a great idea to you but after one use of it at the gym, I haven't worn it back there since.

Another huge issue with this scent is performance. It is a very fleeting fragrance which you will have to apply liberally to smell after 4 hours. I think there are many others from the house's Summer line which would be better alternatives to this for "sports" like activities. A disappointment in almost every aspect from smell, to versatility, to use of notes and performance.

Simply put- If u wear this around someone who owns a cat they would probably think your cat doesn't like you...lol

I don’t know why L’Eau d’Issey PH would need a sports version – it has been pretty much of a sports-like fragrance since its inception. But, then. Issey Miyake has produced only seventeen or eighteen flankers of L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme, so maybe they aren’t overdoing the flanker thing…

The first time I tested L’Eau d’Issey PH Sport, the opening presented to me a full, piercing citrus note. That was the note that stayed with me through almost the complete run of the fragrance. I think the piercing quality of the citrus was helped by the vetiver and cedar from the base. It was not an impressive demonstration because the citrus was somewhat of the the Lemon Pledge variety. The next several times I tested it, I would have preferred the first version… Instead of a direct citrus, all I could smell was a very synthetic grapefruity version - something reminiscent of several Calvin Kline scents of the past two decades.

This sport version does remind me a bit of the original L’Eau d’Issey PH, except that Sport seems to be missing the aquatic (or possibly aldehydic) notes that fill out the citruses of the original. More’s the loss: This one doesn’t have any of the quirky character that of my old tried and true L’Eau d’Issey pour Homme. It’s not a bad fragrance, but it’s totally redundant.

Salutation.

After Dior Homme Sport,Roadster Sport and Armani Code Sport this is fourth sport fragrnce in my collection. L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme Sport definitely brings back good old memories with the Original Version. In my mind It is better than Givenchy Play Sport,Kenzo Sport,Chrome Sport but less subtle than Dior and Roadster sport. A nice lemony type fresh scent.simple clean scent that clings very close to the skin.this kind of scents making you feel better about yourself. Summery,Inoffensive,Clean, Citrusy,Soft,Enjoyable, Casual and Uplifting.

It begins with fresh notes, juicy grapefruit and bergamot along with leather notes.the dry down are so safe and calm with vetiver and cedar and with a hint of amber which results so nice but nothing spectacular scent in my book.citrusy notes are so dominant here and i love it.if you enjoy the original version but prefer something softer and less spicy than it,you should try this one.suitble for SUMMER CASUAL use.totally a good choice, especially if the very strong smells of most mens colognes make you sick.ladies love it.

Sillage?Average.

Longevity?About 4 hours on my skin.

A very cheap deodorant smelling fragrance that has very little to offer. Hard believe Jacques Cavallier is the nose behind this one. This is one of the worst even among the generally not-so-impressive ''sport'' fragrances. If you're after one, look at the ones by Dior, Chanel or even Lanvin.
I'd stay away from this one.
