Reviews of Pasha Edition Noire

Cartier pulled a fast one with Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire (2013), and I'm not entirely sure if it is a good or bad business move in the long run, but it doesn't seem to be hurting anything regardless. The original Pasha de Cartier (1992) was part of the initial "return to the classic fougère" period of the late 1980's, when fragrances like Jazz by Yves Saint Laurent (1988) and Eternity for Men by Calvin Klein (1989) offered up new or quite literally fresher interpretations of the traditional fougère structure last seen in the early 20th century, right before vanilla and powder really crept in to transform the fougère into a barbershop staple. Rather than continue heading down that route with another spicy or aromatic fougère treatment, the flanking Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire instead proves to be Cartier's official entry into the ambroxan/norlimbanol "woody fresh floral" direction set up by Bleu de Chanel (2010) at the beginning of the decade. Disguising this obvious nod to trend as a flanker rather than a new pillar line was the perfect way to avoid making Cartier seem like it was "selling out" to its hardcore hobbyist-level perfume fans, since they can release a gimmicky flanker without damaging the integrity of the original pillar and sweep it under the rug when it fails (as they've already done), spawning a discontinued collectable in the process. However, selling a flanker to the uninitiated as a bold and exciting new launch product is harder because questions about the original sometimes arise, unless you get lucky like Guy Laroche did with Drakkar Noir (1982) and knock it out of the park so hard that you can quietly discontinue the original. In Cartier's case, Edition Noire seems to sell well enough that the original Pasha no longer turns up at most department stores selling Cartier, but the boutiques, perfume shops, and high-end stores still handle it.

The overall feel of Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire is that of a typical fresh woody floral ambergris masculine with some of the fougère top notes lifted from the original Pasha de Cartier grafted onto it. Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire is indeed darker with a focus on vetiver across dihydromyrcenol very similar to the aforementioned Drakkar Noir, but all comparisons end after the heart. The opening of grapefruit, bergamot, and pink pepper instantly link this as an attempt to grab the Bleu de Chanel zeitgeist at the time, with mint and verbena linking to Drakkar Noir, and we were a few years away from the real ambrox bombs like Dior Sauvage (2015), so the modus operandi was still all about pleasant balance. The heart shows off the aforementioned soapy vetiver and aquatic tones, with some lavender and geranium joining mint from the top, slightly recalling the original Pasha, but none of the original's spice is used. Violet provides another reference to Bleu de Chanel here as well, and once the base comes into play, the tug-of-war between the 1980's/1990's and the 2010's ends in the favor of the latter. Ambroxan and norlimbanol provide a very familiar salty, fresh, slightly scratchy skin glow, while cedar, a bit of clove, and amber finish out the "noire" aspects of the flanker. Overall this is an ultra-clean and versatile scent a man with modern tastes can wear almost any time of year, and performs well with about 8 hours of sillage featuring moderate projection. Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire is no monster, but if it was, it would be too grating on the nerves with all the zippy top notes. To me, this is a perfect left-of-center office fragrance, but you can pull it off in casual or formal situations too if you like.

The kind of person who'd wear Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire isn't likely to be one who fell in love with the original Pasha, unless they're the rare sort who is at peace wearing both oakmoss-rich vintage masculine styles of the 20th century and the more synthetic/linear "catch-all" type masculines designer houses like to release in the 21st century. Cartier is not a house that has historically sold its soul to the shareholders, accountants, and lowest common denominator because outside perfume, they are known for niche jewelry and fine watches, neither of which are things that have the same ubiquity as "high fashion" being pumped out into department stores by their designer peers. For this reason, Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire doesn't give much cause for alarm, as proven by very artistic and wearable flankers for the Déclaration (1997) line and the launch of the excellent L'Envol de Cartier (2016) for men just a few years later, plus their niche-level releases to boot. Cartier sits a tad above designers in price, bridging the gap between psuedo-niche prestige designer brands like Louis Vuitton and Tom Ford above with the usual Diors and Chanels below, so they naturally aren't looking for Mathilde Laurent to compose a sauce for "Joe Average". Unfortunately for Cartier, they are also a brand that likes to get steeply discounted in the gray market thanks to all the lovely testers and liquidated stock from closed stores that end up on eBay or other online markets, so this one is another example of "smelling like a million bucks without paying for it" just like Lalique or Guerlain. Get your hands on this and see for yourself, but as the closest thing to a mainstream masculine as Cartier gets, I rather like Edition Noire. Thumbs up!

I smell greenish lavender and geranium leaves. Sour bergamot and hints of grapefruit. It's all somewhat harsh. I get a weird synth-green vibe overall. This is way too masculine for me to wear. It isn't particularly enjoyable. My husband finds it annoying as well. The first 15 or so minutes aren't good... The harshness begins to settle with a small dose of amber smoothing things out. It adds a touch of sugar. I also get a bit of nuttiness from somewhere. The cedar smells like a log, recently tossed onto a fire.

Cedar and amber take over almost completely, making this a tad more enjoyable. Still, I can't get past the beginning to warrant a thumbs up, for this. PEN is just not for me.

Yet another unremarkable "bleu" scent for unimaginative men who want to smell like Axe body spray but feel fancy because it's a name brand. Grape topnotes, ammonia, green herbs, bleachy nutmeg, and a base that incorporates a pinch of coffee in addition to the usual aquatic "woody amber" drydown (literally the only element here that isn't exactly the same as a thousand other men's mall scents). I can't imagine any collector would have any need for another one of these.

As many have already opined, Pasha Edition Noire is a contemporary refit of the dated original. It achieves this by rounding the heavy spicy-herbal-citrus tinge of Pasha and incorporates the common amber-cedar basenote presence. This adds a slight bit of woodiness and sweetness, while retaining the green and citrus elements of the original.

This brings Pasha squarely up to date. It's not unique, so Pasha Edition Noire won't turn many heads necessarily.

Moderate sillage, okay longevity. Worth a look especially for contemporary shoppers wanting to check out a definite, more wearable update to the classic Pasha.

I did not connect this to the original upon first sniff. For me I got the usual dark-woody synthetic drenched in green citrusy notes, and it was boring...until some very interesting incense and spice say hi.

They are so low and late in the sniff you might miss it.

And that is the saving grace for this. Could have been it's own thing, as original Pasha is so unique and different.
At least the Noire tag is not lost in translation, but it is NOT a black version of the original.

A softer, more wearable version of the original. The sharp edges and sometimes screechy citrus and lavender in the original are toned down with amber. I like the original Pasha, but it can be untameable on the wrong day. Noir is it's laid-back cousin, who really doesn't care what your situation or body heat may turn into. It can behave. Thumbs up.
