Reviews of Alfa

It seems that the core structure of most of the Mendittorosa's offerings is a smooth dry woody base that while feeling unquestionably synthetic, it's also well handled to never feel overly dry or sharp as too often happens with these kind of bases. Alfa makes no exception and offers yet another take on the spicy oriental theme.

A mildly floral opening paired to some culinary herbs is what you get in the early stages. The herbs (mainly thyme) feel extremely aromatic and yet, somehow, they don't border into apothecary / rustic territories. The floral note is remarkable and while the fragrance is marketed as a feminine composition, it feels completely unisex. A vaguely leathery vibe, probably provided by saffron breaks in in the middle phase and it's supported by a smooth, kind of transparent woody-incense base that seems to be the real essence of the whole fragrance.

It smells very nice if you like restrained woody-orientals but, in my opinion, it's a bit too weak and safe to warrant its very demanding price. After the promising opening, the fragrance falls pretty flat really too soon to then basically disappear from my skin after less than a couple of hours. The accords are nice enough (in a "average niche quality" meaning) but, again, a little more character and courage would have played in the fragrance's favor.

Basically a spicy oriental on a diet.

Alfa opens with a touch of floral jasmine before quickly moving to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart the mild jasmine fades to the background as a heavy black pepper note emerges to take control of the composition with significant aromatic saffron spice and synthetic vague woody support. During the late dry-down the relatively weak base is near solely derived of semi-dry sandalwood, with faint traces of the black pepper remaining well in the background. Projection is on the low side of average and longevity below average at about 5 hours on skin.

Alfa's black pepper driven heart accord has been done more times than I can even think about, and quite frankly much better. The combination of the black pepper, saffron and mild jasmine with the synthetic woods (can anyone say "norlimbanol"?) somewhat resembles the primary heart accord of Declaration by Cartier in spirit (and a number of other similar compositions). Probably my favorite part of Alfa's development is its simplistic stark sandalwood late dry-down, but the base is so weak you barely can smell it except up close. I am afraid there is no getting around the reality (at least to this reviewer) that Alfa is just not particularly distinctive and lacks the solid base structure needed to succeed. The bottom line is the 185 Euro per 100ml bottle Alfa just can't separate itself from others in the field with its overplayed peppery heart and poor performance metrics, earning a very "average" 2.5 stars out of 5 and a neutral rating. I would look at far superior compositions like the great Tzora by Anat Fritz before buying this one.

Mendittorosa is a new italian niche brand making its debut with an interesting trilogy of "odors" (according with them) which deserve all the fair attention. Alfa is the first of the trilogy and it paints over the olfactory path a really temperamental type of modern woman. This fragrance is basically a sensual floral musk with an earthy/resinous (incensey) temperament. The aroma is uncompromisingly feminine. The note of aoud (an incense/oud) is soon emerging but it is not aggressive or medicinal but potently earthy, herbal and stout as flanked by a soon recognizable fist of milky radiant saffron in a pleasant game of contrasts. The lacteous saffron (faint in its performance) encounters the earthy resin in a sort of floral rendez-vous which projects an extremely opaque, fluidy and woody (in a dry way) floral/musky spark in the air. The background is such a diaphanous one and indeed the oud is not at all dark and massive but turns finally out earthy, floral, sharp and musky in an almost fluidy/watery way. In this final phase the earthy/incensey fluidy temperament appears sheer and shadowy in all its woodiness, carnal muskiness and floral sophistication. I have to say that the floral presence (may be rose-jasmine) appears finally more grassy/musky than properly floral, namely since the beginning I note the sophisticated floral spark but i "see" it earthy/grassy and lymphatic more than properly related to floral leaves. Unfortunately the longevity is absolutely faint on my skin (frankly too much and I hope it depends just by the interaction with my skin), the aroma lasts less than two hours before completely fading in the forgetfulness.
