Armani Privé Encens Satin fragrance notes

Reviews of Armani Privé Encens Satin

What a gorgeous fragrance!

If you have tried Tom Ford's Rive d'Ambre you will already know the amber note that dominates the drydown of this fragrance. The Tom Ford introduces this amber note with a citrus opening, whereas here we have incense and woods making the introduction. The amber is light and complex with fruity accents, but don't let that fruitiness scare you, it really is just an accent. This fragrance is still unisex, elegant, formal, dark leaning.

The incense comes at the beginning, as incense notes are known to do. It's the same incense note as that used in Avignon and Cardinal, this time a bit lighter. It lingers to the end, but it's presence is mostly felt in the first 20 minutes. Within 20 minutes the woodiness of the fragrance shines. The note pyramid lists spices, and I suspect it is black pepper that is creating this brilliant woody note, which lasts noticeably for the first hour and then provides a nice woody backbone for the amber drydown. A light vanilla note cushions the fragrance in the drydown. Intoxicatingly complex and beautiful from beginning to end.

The incense is clearly the dominant impression at the opening - restrainedly spicy, with only a touch of an balsamic undertone, not really ceremonial and quite well done. After a while a synthetic fuitiness creeps in, which at times takes on a mildly boozy character.

In the drydown a slightly sweetish amber evolves that appears to have a touch if tonka attached to it. Towards the later stages the incense retreats and the ambery fruitiness prevails until the end.

I get moderate sillage, very good projection and seven hours of longevity on my skin.

Not a particularly creative scent for wintery days, it is a lighter and not too intensive incense composition - incense lite so to speak. The fruitiness in not particularly nice, but not really unpleasant either. Overall just deserving a - just - positive score. 3/5.

Interesting, but not quite...

The star of the show is frankincense, paired with greens. It smells like bergamot and mossy galbanum with vetiver, but instead of calling to mind a rich chypre, the greens mostly just make the incense sort of sour. There's also a dusty oak smell, and something sweet in there (I don't get the offending fruit others are disliking).

It all comes together to be OK, but nothing too special. It's not bad, but there are much more interesting incense perfumes out there. Meh.

Armani Prive's Encens Satin is a pleasant incense mixed with spices and amber. The amber renders the blend much sweeter and smoother than most incense-dominant fragrances but it's still pleasant, neither too sharply incense-ridden nor cloyingly sweet. Much like Cuir Noir softened the blunt force of the leather via vanilla, so does Encs Satin soften the incense via amber.

This is surely a crowd-pleaser among the incense-loving crowd, of which I'm not a part, but I certainly appreciate the blend here, as there is enough care to achieve the happy balance described above.

Decent projection and longevity but still subject the same high Armani Prive pricing, this might prove worthwhile for particularly big fans of incense, but it's not something I'll buy.

If you're looking for a new take on Bois d'Encens, you'll be disappointed. This is BdE's polar opposite. Gone is the resinous, high-pitched church incense, and it its place is a soft, sweet, feminine vanillic-incense. Both are terrific scents, but this one definitely lacks the guts of its predecessor.

If it weren't for the price, I'd definitely love to have a bottle of this. At the current rate though, not gonna happen.

Cheaper alternative - Ouarzazate by Comme des Garcons

"Customer research analysis profiling says we need to update the Privé incense.
What's the new style these days?
Oud...
Oud and incense? Quelle horreur!
- that'd cost a fortune!
...or you could try fruity...
OK, do it fruity - and we need it by Tuesday"

ENCENS SATIN
incense , woods , spices , amber

Opening up as a pink-fruity and incense combo, you immediately notice how Encens Satin is sweet.
A sweet fruity floral with a thin sharp incense note floating somewhere overhead.

The prominent accord feels like sweet cherry bomb and lychee; some kind of fruchouli, but thankfully with a light touch. It's supported by a brief cameo of natural cedarwood.

Spice notes? Well I get cinnamon and I think black pepper which could be used to cut the incense, and later on a clove like note.

The emerging base of woody amber goes some way to uniting the fruit and incense but doesn't quite close the gap, although its a quite nice amber with a floral nuance. By one hour the vanillic-sweet amber manages to take control of the fruchouli, and starts to get a grip on the incense as well.

Eventually it settles into an incense - amber duo with a fruity side, later exposing a woody amber drydown.

The juice performs better on skin than paper where it doesn't hold together so well.

Encens Satin feels like a willful young girl who has truanted from a ballet class in her pink tutu and been persuaded to let the priest take her back to her mother : an odd mixture of fruity innocence and aloof incense united in a sweet amber embrace.

A strange idea, but not groundbreaking or even successful, and a rather boring mainstream perfume masquerading as luxe.
It does have some appeal but I wouldn't call it good.
