Reviews of 1926 Turandot

Shrieking jasmine and narcissus, with blotches of orange blossom. Smells old-fashioned, 80's-like (to me) - perhaps, even way "older" than that. Smells "French". Evocative, from another time - beautiful! Heavy. Exotic. I have fairly good experiences with this house, 1926 is no exception.

Deep. Soulful. A feminine lacquer. A cocktail of patchouli, amber, and incense. Flowers dance around still, as this all grows even deeper, more piercing. A little, goes a long way.

After time this combo reminds me of opoponax somehow.

Then, it becomes an almost exclusive amber / patch accord with hints of old leather moving in.

Amber-soaked sinew. Fabulous!

Orange blossom and ginger opening, very even-keeled patchouli and leather. Sprinkling of pear and fresh daffodils with bright green stalks after the initial application and comes into its own with full blown narcissus blooms. The florals are a bit piercing at times which can be slightly off-putting at first but 1926 rounds out to a nice dry down of amber and leather. Very floral and very green, quite a surprise!

Turandot was Puccini's final piece and unfinished at that. Turandot was the 'China that we all wanted in the past, not what we know', much in the same way Disney's Main Street is the American fantasy of what a Main Street of years past should have been, not what they really were. The story itself if mostly Persian in origin, even the name 'Turandot' comes from the Persian Turandokht. The most minimal amount of cultural authenticity was actually a good faith effort by Puccini in a time where Western stereotypes of the Far East were far more common. Puccini went through great efforts to avoid the negative racial stereotypes that most Europeans projected at the time even though the opera in today's time feels like the opposite of the intent!

The daughter of Emperor Altoum, Turandot, has decreed that she will only marry if a suitor of noble blood can answer three riddles. If he cannot he shall lose his head, the most recent suitor, the Prince of Persia, is to be executed for failing.

Calaf, who is from another land, is a brave, selfish prince who falls instantly in love with Turandot. Even though his exiled father and a slave-girl beg him not to, Calaf rings the gong and declares that he will answer the three riddles.

Turandot's test, we learn, is due to an ancestor's abduction by a conquering prince so she seeks revenge on all men who wish to possess her. She presents her riddles and the unknown prince answers each one:
"What is born each night and dies each dawn?" Hope
"What flickers red and warm like a flame, yet is not a flame?" Blood
"What is like ice but burns?" Turandot

Shaken that the stranger has guessed the answer to all three riddles, the princess begs her father not to be given to the stranger. Calaf offers her a riddle in return: "What is my name?" if Turandot can guess by dawn, he will forfeit his life.

A proclamation is brought forth - no one in Peking shall sleep until Turandot knowns the strangers name. Calaf is bribed and doesn't take the bait, is asked to leave the city, and to go far far away. Finally his father and the slave girl are dragged in by soldiers and the slave girl is tortured stating she will never say his name. Turandot is impressed by her fortitude and asks her secret for staying silent, the slave girl replies 'love'. When the torture resume and increases, the slave girl tells Turandot that she too will know love, grabs a dagger and kills herself. The body is taken away in a procession and Turandot is left alone with Calaf, who kisses her. Turandot begins to weep feeling emotion for the first time. Calaf reveals his identity to Turandot sure that he has won her over.

Turandot declares in front of the emperor's throne that she knows the strangers name, it is Love.
