Reviews of Replica Lipstick On

In the lipstick-rose category, this is the slightly trashy, late-teen/early 20s entry. Projection and longevity are insane, due to an overdosed synthetic base. The heliotrope is super-doughy. It’s unrefined and cheap-smelling - a caricature of the genre - but I like this (I’m not sure why as I have a bottle of Misia EDT, which makes this smell like it should be consigned to the dressing-up box); Lipstick On has a certain trashy charm. I wear it when I want the lipstick vibe to last for, like, 3 days. Post-apocalypse, all the prettiest cockroach girls will be wearing this. Pre-apocalypse, maybe just me and the local drag queen...

Neutral for quality, even though I love it.

Powdery, chalky heliotrope & iris. Pale, sweet orange blossom. It certainly smells like fine lipstick to me.

Sweet Tonka and rich bourbon vanilla. The lipstick accord does not last. Still, there is a slight starchy, dry note underneath, in the heart. Lipstick accord rises again after time. Patchouli is in here somewhere - it is elusive enough that I cannot deem it a strong note. I swear at times I can smell a sparkle of cinnamon. The vanilla here, lingers on and on. Overall, I really enjoy this one.

I’m dubious of the Replica line from Maison Margiela (parent company L’Oreal). In more antiquated perfume categories, I suppose I prefer the abstraction of “Orientals” over the floral mimesis of European traditions. Put another way, I prefer the disorientation of simulacra over the uncanny awkwardness of simulation. And, mostly, the Replica collection is closer to these latter categories, reaching for a ‘darned if that doesn’t smell just like ______!’ kind of novelty.

And Lipstick On, 2015, is not without its novelty; don’t get me wrong. Other reviewers are not misguided when (whether complimenting or disparaging) they attribute to the fragrance Play Doh, waxiness, marshmallow, cola, and sugared violets. What can I say? Add to that cosmology an unfussy heliotrope and the iris of a professional mourner, and we are working with some of my most nostalgic olfactory triggers. Cosmetic, confectionary, and cryptic beneath its almost too-smooth transitions, Lipstick On manages to behave as perfume about perfume on my skin. It makes a case for an art wherein the deepest meaning resides only on the surface of things.

It’s a scent as crystalline as the crisp taffetas portrayed in Watteau paintings. It’s a cherry befitting Clara Bow’s pursed lips. A petit four laced with a dose of blithe patchouli shoplifted from Mugler’s Angel. It smuggles a very fuzzy, dusty peach in without naming it outright. A little bit of puffed rice and an almost-orris pantomime. A riddle that plucks just a few blossoms out of Cacharel’s Loulou. Its galbanum tends toward sheer muskiness, only winking at the ingredient’s capacity for greenness at the start, and gently graduating toward a bracing quality that holds its own against the coumarin base. Throughout, it lays close to the skin, carried like a secret or a romantic crush (maybe a confidence shared, as it does more than a few notes, with Delicious Closet Queen, 2007, by Nathalie Feithauer for Etat Libre d’Orange).

If I’m found wanting during wearing, it’s that the vanilla/tonka combo is wearying and likely rounds off some of the transitions that could be more interesting if they were allowed to make more of a leap. The sweetness that issues from this base overdoes the whole composition a bit, and I wonder how many of the other notes would distinguish themselves with less of a powdered sugar cloud to wander through.

In its genre, Lipstick Rose, 2000, by Ralf Schwieger for Frederic Malle (parent company Estee Lauder), is often said to out perform Lipstick On in sophistication and acumen, making better use of musks and rose in the overall composition while still playing to a very cosmetic fantasy. To my taste, this Margiela fragrance just has more fun. And at less than half the cost for 100 ml on the current market, the cheaper date makes a persuasive case for itself.

That combination of violet and iris that smells, at least in theory, like classic lipstick. Having been on an ingredient binge lately, I recognize this as a clever fusion of ionones (violets over suede) and peach aldehydes (doughy greasy paint), over iris and pink pepper. As the violets and iris fade, tonka comes in, with its sour greens and tobacco nuances, along with a textbook marshmallow fruitchouli base.

In total, Lipstick On is technically sound - the transitions are good, and sillage and projection are perfect. This is clearly well put together. The pink pepper base is clearly there to give mainstream appeal to a niche concept, and it's used skillfully enough to keep Lipstick On from smelling too dreadfully common. It's like this is precision engineered to stand out from the sea of peachy strawberry fabric softener perfumes at Nordstrom or Sephora, while still appealing to customers who like that sort of thing.

For years now, I've used lipstick violet perfumes as an example of a niche cliche, the kind of scent put out by niche companies that stick to tried and true niche formulas instead of trying to actively innovate. I think this perfectly sums up my experience with the Replica line, so I'm having a hard time actually getting excited about this. I think it works as a concept if its wide distribution means that this is the first time someone has smelled this sort of thing, while more experienced perfumistas will likely prefer Malle's Lipstick Rose or something that's less obviously concerned with mass acceptance.

Lipstick On by Maison Martin Margiela was a pleasant surprise. The iris is the waxy, play-dough type and it is paired with a touch of rose and galbanum. Yes, this absolutely smells like grandma’s makeup bag, but manufactured in 2015. One could accuse LO of being “generic”, and maybe it is not a groundbreaking fragrance, but it is nicely done. There is a brightness that sticks around after the opening that keeps the whole thing from becoming too sweet and doughy—cherry-almond pastry coupled with earthy-wax. When I take a good snort, a 3D architecture unfolds with all of the high notes, mid notes, and low notes taking a turn. As the fragrance develops on skin, it slowly warms up and becomes snuggly—one of my new favorites!

Just in case you thought I'd wear any old lipstick/iris/powder/vanilla/old lady handbag accord (and even I thought I would), here's proof that I will not.
Lipstick On takes these notes and does something really weird with them, seeming to smother them under a weird, smooth cloud until almost no distinct top notes can emerge. Then something even stranger happens: the scent seems to swell from within, growing brighter and sweeter but no less distinct. This creates is a bloated mess, ruining what could have been a failsafe, albeit generic, accord. In its place emerges a strong, fruity blend of vanilla and cloves--basically flat Coca-Cola with a hint of wax lips candy--and it becomes ever larger, stronger, and more nauseating, until I finally have to scrub it off. Sillage is monstrous.

This style and construction of perfumery seems to be everywhere all of a sudden. I suspect its recent popularity comes from the success of Elie Saab Le Parfum, wherein a sort of sheen in similarly cast over the scent, and aldehydes seem to slowly emerge from its heart. It works in Elie Saab because (1) aldehydes emerging through orange blossom and citrus is like the sun coming up in a perfume and (2) Francis Kurdjian is a genius. It doesn't work with Lipstick On: even if it's iris and leather were good (which they're not), they can't support this structure (at least not without some further fine-tuning). I'm glad that Francis Kurkdjian is getting his due; nonetheless, the trickle-down could be painful.
