Reviews of Pasha Edition Noire Sport

The flankers of Pasha de Cartier (1992) have always been delightfully varied in tone, if few and far between plus ephemeral when it comes to lifespan on the market, so rather than chase down potentially expensive discontinued "unicorns" that one can only boast owning afterwards but be too anxious to use, I've generally sampled them from friends that own them or tucked-away perfume stores that still display testers and put in my two cents afterward. Cartier revived interest in the line with the flanker Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire (2013), giving a modern fresh woody ambrox makeover to the sagging popularity of the traditional fougère accord that the original contained. I liked Edition Noire, in spite of all the bashing from the usual niche and vintage bro-llectors that it was too modern, too synthetic, too mainstream, too cheap-smelling, or what have you, because at least Cartier had the sense to relegate something like this to a flanker so as to easily discontinue it without tarnishing the name of the line if nobody bought it. Cartier is almost of niche interest anyway because you only really find them in the highest end department stores outside of boutiques or perfume shops, so something along the lines of Bleu de Chanel (2010) is actually more of an odd turn for them than your typical designer. Somebody up in their marketing department must have convinced them they needed a flanker of a flanker too, just like Calvin Klein or Armani, to get all that silly designer mass-market demographic-lead R&D nonsense out of their system, which has landed up with Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire Sport (2015). Unlike the older brother, which still stapled on some fougère elements from the original Pasha de Cartier, this sport flanker feels like a completely fragrance completely unrelated to it, and might be the house's attempt to gauge interest in something totally modern and in line with what designers are doing.

The opening of Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire Sport is a burst of melon and aquatic notes, like Mathilde Laurent did her homework and figured out what was working for the likes of Ralph Lauren, Kenneth Cole, Dolce & Gabbana, and other household names at the mid-level, then mixed them together for maximum effect. The melon is obviously calone-derived, but there is also dihydromyrcenol here and some ozonic grapefruit, mixing late 80's, 90's, and 2000's freshies styles then weighing it down with amber in the mid so it doesn't get too tacky. This use of amber is probably the most balanced yet also unusual I have seen in a fragrance of its type, being fresh and youthful for the first 30 minutes, then plunging into almost a syrupy earthy richness and warmth that tugs this far away from any "sport" mentality it might otherwise try to pass off. The heart is also filled with some sort of paradisone (a hedione derivative), and brings a sparkling sheen of clean to the amber that is more citrusy in tone than traditional hedione (a jasmine-like clean glow), tugging the composition back towards sportiness again, however briefly. The base is the usual woody aroma chemicals and is some mish-mash of norlimbanol, firsantol, plus some puffs of discernible cedar all riding on a foundation of ambroxan. By the end, Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire Sport feels very much like something that would sit next to any number of masculine releases sold at Macy's or Ulta, and that's a bit of a bummer. Wear time is good at 8 hours, and performance is more than enough thanks to the citrus/amber/melon/wood combo, but this still isn't really a sport fragrance. Best time to use this would be spring, summer, and fall to me, with pretty much generalist capabilities outside formal situations where Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire Sport may come across too casual or sweet.

If I was to recommend Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire Sport (what a mouthful), I'd say it should be given to a late teenager or early twenty-something leaving high school and entering college that wants a use-anywhere fragrance that smells fresh enough for day, warm enough for night, and doesn't require much forethought. If a dumb reach male market scent is what Cartier was really looking to create, they succeeded well with Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire Sport, but will probably not cash in on this like they might otherwise because it's still a fragrance from a high-end jeweler with a limited-distribution fragrance line, plus a flanker of a flanker at that. This means anyone looking for a fragrance like this is going to have trouble finding it unless stumbled upon by accident in a Nordstrom. Fans of the house shopping for masculines are likely to be onto Déclaration (1997) or L'Envol de Cartier (2017) before this, while the vintage guys are still battling it out over surviving first editions of Santos de Cartier (1982) or Pasha de Cartier, and the niche heads strictly sticking to the Les Heures de Parfum line or Les Heures Voyageuses oud range, so I'm not sure who is really left to buy this besides the discount hunter stumbling upon the occasional bottle that turns up at Ross for $40. Oh well, that's why Pasha (and to an extent Déclaration) flankers have proven so much fun, since they are so left-field compared to the original pillar entries. I wouldn't enjoy owning a bottle of this, but this "sporty" shoe may prove a good fit for the right foot seeking something a bit more relaxed and mainstream from the house, just not for fans of the OG Pasha de Cartier or anyone looking for the house's usual artistry. Solid, but a bit boring, and good enough to accept but not enough to like, I'm mostly indifferent about this flanker and feel it may have been better served by unique name launching a new product line aimed at the market segment it seems built for. Neutral.

It's an okay flanker of a flanker. Pasha Edition Noire Sport smells unremarkably pleasant. It definitely checks off the boxes of typical fresh aquatic scents, with requisite tanginess and lightness compared to Pasha Edition Noire proper and the dated original.

I like scents that incorporate marine accords, and this outing does so nicely. Great for active / warm weather wear. It has enough distinction versus the other Pasha versions to stand on its own as a regular wardrobe scent. Longevity is not great, so refresher spritzes would be needed after just 3-4 hours, depending on your skin chemistry and environmental factors.

Love at first sniff for me.
Very different from the original and the Noire.

In fact this could have been a stand alone fragrance.

To my nose I get a rhubarb note that is just delicious. Must be the marine notes playing with the melon.

The longevity issue is fixed with overspray, so no real issue there. Is it sporty? Who knows. No one knows what sporty means, but we like it :)

Full bottle for me, worth a sniff for all. It might hook you!

Not to piggyback on another reviewer's thoughts, but speedracer's first sentence really sums it up perfectly. This has a beautiful, refreshing aquatic melon note in the opening which lasts for about 20 minutes to half an hour, and then it is followed up by a very standard, typical synthetic woody-aquatic base which is neither offensive nor impressive. I went against my own rules on this one and bought it in the store after smelling the initial spray on a paper card. It smelled so good! But alas, it only lasted 30 minutes before spiraling into a very generic, simplistic base. I'm giving it a neutral, because it's certainly not a bad scent, but it doesn't quite deserve a thumbs up.

Great refreshing opening that's followed up an hour later with a generic woody/fresh smell that's prevalent in all shower gels these days. I like that smell and it's pleasing to others, so I'm not complaining, just describing.

It's a simple crowd pleaser in the style of about half a dozen mainstream designer-best sellers.

Performance is not good. Only projects for about 1 hour, which is the best part of the scent, but after 4 hours, it's pretty much skin scent only.

I have Pasha de Cartier Edition Noire and the difference between these two are pretty noticeable. This is all about the aquatic notes. It comes off fresh and more playful than Edition Noire. This works well in the office and to a degree has more versatility because it's not over bearing and doesn't project for hours on end. I get a good 4-5 hours and then it's a skin scent.

Will this end world hunger and get you the girl of your dreams, no. The one thing I would have liked would have been the addition of a peppery note. Just a little spice or maybe some incense and this would have a little more bit. Maybe that's the problem, not enough Doberman Pinscher and too much Labrodore. Everyone likes a Lab.....good, solid and no fuss. Yep, that about sums it up.
