About Myrrh & Tonka

Part of Jo Malone London's Cologne Intense series. The fragrance was created by perfumer Mathilde Bijaoul, who says:

There is an atmosphere of addiction and carnal richness to this fragrance which appeals to both men and women. At the top there is a hint of lavender and a floral note, creating a comforting and voluptuous opening. The big, rich heart and base note of myrrh is sensual and the tonka brings generosity. It’s captivating and mesmerising.

Reviews of Myrrh & Tonka

Not much of a top, middle, or base here - Everything seems to come together all at once. It reminds me of a liqueur I've drank in the past. Seems a bit creamy to my nose so far. Nutty and resinous, too.

I get more Tonka later and it's of a cola or root beer vibe. This frag is linear, in a good way. It's sweet mostly. Moreover, it IS one of the best Tonka scents I've ever tried!

One of my favorites from Jo Malone. I love its spicy and non cloying sweetness. It has good performances and is very unisex.

OOOOO la la i LOVE this scent its delicious! Its rich with warm almond and lush vanilla notes, it mingles with hand-harvested myrrh tree to create a long-lasting and alluring fragrance.

Myrrh & Tonka starts off like a mixed drink (amaretto sour) and finishes like a dusty-vanilla coke. I would call this a gourmand because it's very edible from start to finish.

Performance is okay with soft projection that occasionally makes it way to your nose without burying your face in your skin. Longevity is average, lasting on your skin 4-5 hours.

An almost gourmand fragrance, Myrrh & Tonka by Jo Malone is an oriental-aromatic-balsamic experience that captivates the mind and heart.

There is a lasting sweetness that dominates over M&T, touching on the lavender's inherent medicinal clean herbal quality, fancy resinous Omumbiri myrrh, bittersweet almond, vanilla and tonka.

It smells luxurious and mature, full of character. Has more sillage than the typical Jo Malone scent, as well as great longevity. Equally wearable by both genders.

So, this is one of those perfumes that smells like root beer but calls it myrhh. That being said, I've actually quite enjoyed it.

The topnotes are a sweet, candied blast of lavender mixed with root beer over wisps of marshmallow. While this sounds like a cheap candy nightmare, there's something about it (the lavender, maybe some hidden aldehydes?) that makes it fun without being stupid.

The best part happens about a half an hour in, when the focus turns to a fantastically executed hay/straw note mixing with almond marzipan over the subtle marshmallow, while the candied root beer gives lift and brightness. Reading this description of problematic and possibly conflicting notes, I would never have believed that this could smell as good and clever as it does. A very nice surprise.
