About Black Velvet Café

Picture a secluded corner in a subtly lit café, with black velvet furnishings and smooth coffee. We made it with oudh and coffee absolute, woods and musk. Some people smell more oudh, some get coffee, and for some it's a perfect balance. We make it strong, like our espressos.

Reviews of Black Velvet Café

This smells like an lovely swank pub with some history. The old wood-floored and exposed wooden-walled kind that is kept very clean, with a soft fireplace going. It's almost as if the jovial owner of the pub is somewhere off in the distance smoking a quality cigar, and the bartender is grinding up some coffee beans to help sober him up.

Other reviewers pointed out the band-aid smell, and while it does carry a phenolic tinge through to the end, it is only harsh for a few minutes when first wearing this. Even then, it didn't strike me as unpleasant, but that will be subjective.

It's a lovely scent. It will not be for everyone, but it nails the intention it set out to do. It seems like it would be great to wear out to the bar down the street on cold winter nights, and perhaps on weekends outdoors.

Well done - very well done. Definitely a woody, leather and tobacco accord. Reminds me of the pubs before they banned smoking inside - the pubs with all the dark and old wooden benches, tables, and corner seating with the leather backs and seating.

Opens with a slight band-aid tinge but quickly settles down. I did not detect any coffee notes at all on me, but heavy on the leather.

While not my usual cup of tea, I can appreciate it for what it is. Great longevity, a little went a very long way.

Stardate 20171110:

Mrs: Why did you get the hospital Phenyl?
Me: What?
Mrs: The phenyl, antiseptic cleaner.
Me: I have no idea. Oh wait I am wearing Black Velvet Cafe. Here smell it
Mrs: Eewww. Why would you wear it
Me: errr. It is kinda good.
Mrs: Don't wear it to bed

This one is oudy, band aidy. Very similar to Gucci Guilty Absolute (which is not doing well but should). Very unlike 4160.
It is better than GGA.
The oud and smoke are more prominent and the balance with coffee is good. Not many can do coffee well - this and AMen Coffee are the only 2 that I can recall.

Black Velvet Cafe marks yet another interesting entry from Sarah McCartney via her house 4160 Tuesdays.

It very much hits on its intended encapsulation, an antique wooden cafe with lush velvet interiors. It rings sophisticated, woody, and timeless, and calls to mind such a room and the things in it.

Its notes consists of tobacco, oud, leather, coffee, and according to some sources, chocolate. The effect is particularly a woody one and not that sweet, conjuring what such an environment might really smell like. The chocolate, if it's there, is a subtle, dark chocolate, and the coffee surely leans toward the earthy and bitter rather than sweet.

The overall mix might surprise some people, as the notes are well-blended together that fans of all of the notes might not disappointed to see their favorites featured. The presence of oud and coffee, for example, does not make them prominent.

Again, the effect is of a woody interior, antique or perhaps rustic, not necessarily dirty but at least worn in, saturated, time-tested.

Performance is great, as with most entries of hers that seem to be geared more toward cold weather wearing, like this is.

Pricing is $110 for 30ml EDP so not bad at all, especially if you regard it as a nice departure from the norm as I do.
