Clive Christian... costly, but worth it?
by Ali Nakhai, 01 November 2001

Let me paint a picture for you. It’s a Friday night. You’re getting ready to go out, you hear there’s a ripping party with a lot of faces and beautiful people. You slap on your best clothes grabbing your best pair of Diesel jeans and that new Joseph Abboud shirt you got. Or maybe you want to go drop dead sexy and you bust out the Gucci casual suit. Of course there is always Armani if you are searching for the distinguished look. What’s missing? Ahh! The fragrance! Do you grab the sailor suit bottle with the funky magic potion in it? Or perhaps you want something more Alluring to express your Sentiments? Maybe even something that might cause an Obsession? You of course always want to throw a Curve at the new people you meet yet being a Gentleman has also been tried and true. But NO! You always get allusions to someone’s ex or you end up smelling yourself on someone else. There is no escape even the secret Creed is out and about, nothing is left sacred. There is freedom however in the form of a British company: Clive Christian! Clive Christian offers three scents for men and three for women. X, No. 1 and 1872 are the three men's scents that Clive Christian offers.
X for Men
Starts off sharp and rich, very masculine but lightens up into a delicate enchanting smoky scent. You’d swear there is tobacco in this sumptuous aroma but according to the company there is none in it. Tonka beans add a deep vanilla like sweetness that pervades this bewitching aroma giving it a dark luscious sensuality. A subdued cedar note adds woody nuances re-affirming the colognes masculine nature. A mixture of spices ranging from cinnamon to pink pepper supply this olfactory experience with sparks of brilliance. As original as it is divine. If one isn’t willing to dish out $595 for 5mls and isn’t anxious for a jeweled adorned bottle, then the alternative $185 version is might be a more appropriate choice. This scent is perfect for a casual sexy attitude. Of course I believe in wearing what you like where you like but I would pin this one to lounges and clubs with trendy fashionable garments.
No. 1 for Men
This scent is truly a No. 1! It starts off with ambient notes of lily of the valley (which is rumored to be an aphrodisiac) and cardamom. This slightly powdery waft of elegance shortly mellows down into a rich luxurious woody blend of Mexican vanilla, cedarwood, and vetiver. Mexican vanilla is used in rituals to attract a romantic partner. Regardless of the myths surrounding lily of the valley and Mexican vanilla, aphrodisiac or not, this scent WILL grab others attention. It is unique and disturbingly erotic without losing its elegance. At $1820 a pop (without the option of an affordable alternative) it comes in an ornate bottle full of jewels the fragrance is limited to individuals who are madly passionate about fragrance and have the money to practice their insanity. Great for the ultra-chic ultra hip club promoter, business man, or pimp.
1872 for Men
Although this might initially smell like your father with its yet refined character, it is not your fathers cologne. The scent shortly changed from an austere citrus classic with mandarin and petit grain into a sly herbaceous concoction fueled by the clary sage, a sacred herb in the times of ancient Rome. A subtle peppery finish caps off this practice in refinity. A steep $595 for 50mls (an eau de parfum, so it is stronger and you will need to use less than the typical eau de toilette) follows this jewel however a more affordable version is offered in a smaller 30ml bottle at $185. Wonderful for office wear or meeting your fiancés father.
These scents can be purchased in the USA at Bergdorf Goodman’s- just ask for Victoria Christian. ![]()
