As a psychotherapist and author, Aftel began her interest in perfumery just over ten years ago. She was researching the area for her next novel, where the main character was a perfumer. Her interest grew, and in 1995 founded Grandiflorum (with Laura Strausfeld) - a line of fragrances that eschewed synthetic ingredients for only natural notes.
In 1997, Mandy Aftel created Aftelier, a new company that provided bespoke natural perfumes as well as her own creations. Her creations began receiving rave reviews and soon every Hollywood A-lister wanted their own Aftel scent.
Her book, Essence and Alchemy: A Natural History of Perfume, was published in 2001. As well as a history of alchemy and perfumery the book also offers practical techniques and instruction to make your own natural perfumes. No special prior knowledge is assumed and Aftel pretty much takes you by the hand in the creation of your first scent.
You would be hard pressed to find a natural perfumer, without a well-thumbed copy of this book on their bookshelf. Essence and Alchemy is in no doubt partly responsible for the current growing interest in natural perfumery.
"Thank you so much for including me in your list. I am honored to be included as a artisan natural perfumer." (Mandy Aftel on making the Top 25.)![]()
