Prior to establishing Shaping Room in 2000, Shioya had worked with perfumers, Jean-Pierre Bethouart, Alberto Morillas and Thierry Wasser to create unusual scents for his sculptures and installations. One of the scents created was 'Sperida' (by Morillas), which had a semen-like scent, and was the basis for Shaping Room's first perfume 'S-Perfume'.
The Shaping Room fragrance range has since been expanded into several publicly available fragrances, created by some of the world's most talented perfumers
Lust and Sloth were developed as art scents for the olfactory installation of the Seven Deadly Sins (and the website recommends you order samples prior to buying full-size). The Seven Deadly Sins installation was created in collaboration with seven perfumers - each was assigned a different sin. Annie Buzantian for Invidia (Envy), Jacques Cavallier for Superbia (Pride), Ilias Ermenidis for Gula (Gluttony), Harry Fremont for Avaritia (Avarice), Annick Menardo for Ira (Anger) as well as Morillas for Luxuria (Lust) and Wasser for Acedia (Sloth).
Not content with merging the world of art and the world of perfume, Shioya is also merging the world of fragrance blogs with perfume.
"Made by Blog" is a project started by Shioya in collaboration with Katie (from Scentzilla blog), Marina (from Perfume Smellin Things blog), Clement Gavarry and Laurent Le Guernec (both from International Flavors and Fragrances).
Shioya explains:
If you have a passion for perfume, what could be more exciting than to have your own perfume created by one of these perfumers at their state-of-art lab using the best materials that only they can have?
So, I asked two very different type of women who both have a deep, boundless passion for perfumes if they were interested to have their own “dream” scents created by very talented perfumers in one of the major suppliers.
The two scents will be developed without any deadline or cost restrictions, in other words, there is no commercial goal to achieve for this project and, and none of us know where it will end up.
When we are being inundated with updates, flankers and sequels of classics - and when we are bombarded with scents from every celebrity and their dog - it is refreshing to see someone doing something a little different.
"This is really cool. Whether it's olfactory art installation or perfume creation, none of my scent projects could have been possible without the perfumers and the people who supported my ideas at IFF or Firmenich. I share the honor with them. And thanks to whoever voted for me!" (Nobi Shioya on making the Top 25.)![]()
