Brand Profile: Strange Invisible Perfumes
Following four years of intensive research into the art of botanical perfumery, Alexandra Balahoutis founded Strange Invisible Perfumes, named from a scene in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra, in 2000. Her creations exclude synthetic and commercial grade ingredients in favour of purely natural, gently extracted plant, herb and floral essences. The resulting fragrances are free from artificial fixatives and are set in a base of organic, beverage-quality grape alcohol.

Balahoutis also offers a custom perfume service in which she will use a process involving an interview, floral water tasting and a body chemistry assessment to create an "aromatic portrait that echoes the individuality and complexity of the person for whom it is crafted". The creative processes involved in botanical perfumery can also be sampled in the selection of fragrances comprising the signature line. These include the two new additions of Moon Garden and Prima Ballerina. Moon Garden is designed as a tribute to the night gardens of victoriana, which were cultivated with exotic blooms such as moon flowers and pikake - pikake features in the fragrance as well as tuberose and jasmine. Prima Ballerina combines Egyptian and Turkish roses with fresh, clean sage and sharp, citrusy lime for a complex scent reminiscent of a herb filled garden.

All of the fragrances in the signature line, along with the renamed Untitled (previously Lady Day), are available from the Strange Invisible Perfumes Boutique on Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, Los Angeles, at selected Barneys New York locations or online at www.siperfumes.com. A quarter ounce bottle retails at $185.00.end of article
