The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut

A life fully lived is one of ceaseless learning; we learn about ourselves, we learn about others, we learn about the world around us. Part of the wonder of the world around us is the sheer sensory pleasure of art in all its varieties. Fragrances are one of those great pleasures.

I am simply a guy who enjoys wearing and appreciating fragrances. The fact that I live in exotic, tropical Canada may color my views in some way, but you'll have to decide that for yourselves! :) Think of this blog as a collection of musings and observations by a fellow traveler in this realm of olfactory adventure and appreciation!

  1. You are now entering Phase 2 ... Please have your passport ready.

It's been almost 2 years now since my first foray into fragrance. I've gone from my initial, minimalist aspirations ("I just need 1 or 2") to selection-induced mania ("I gotta have 'em all!") and now to a more steady-state equilibrium ("I know what I like. That's all I need."). It's been an interesting journey so far, and I sense that my interest and knowledge is settling into a new phase.

When I bought my first bottle of fragrance, I thought to myself ...

  2. If Bal a Versailles is Dirty, then I Like Dirty

by , 3rd August 2008 at 07:06 AM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
Jean Desprez Bal a Versailles is one of my favorite fragrances. In fact, it and Guerlain Shalimar, are the greatest temptresses in my fragrance wardrobe. I have more "backup" bottles of Bal and Shalimar, always in vintage formulation, than I should ever have if love of fragrances was based on rational thought! Bal and Shalimar are famously rich fragrances targeted at women, but I love them and I think they work fabulously well on me. That makes them my favorite girls in my entire wardrobe... ...

  3. Show Me What You've Got: Is it all about initial notes?

by , 13th July 2008 at 10:52 PM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
We always say that it's not all about the topnotes, and that it's a shame that the general public tends to evaluate fragrances based only on the initial notes they smell at retail counters. It isn't just with fragrances that something like this happens, though. I recently noticed that it also happened when I was on a daytrip and shared my music collection with one of my travel companions.

Some of my absolute favorite tracks are a little more involved. They don't always open with ...

  4. Am I the hunter or the hunted? (Thinking about EDCs of some of my favorites.)

by , 7th July 2008 at 03:53 AM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
Summer can be an odd time for me fragrance-wise. Sure, there are some fragrances in my wardrobe that only show their best in the heat of summer. While they are certainly nice and enjoyable - Creed Original Vetiver, Monsieur Balmain, and Paco Rabanne XS come to mind - there's something I miss from the stronger "cold weather" fragrances. I want something animalic at times. I want something musky on some days. I want something spicy for some occasions.

    I think if I wore ...

  5. Fragrance limits at the new workplace

by , 28th June 2008 at 09:18 PM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
The past month has been an interesting experience in terms of fragrances because I've changed to a new day-job with a completely different environment, feel, and in some sense, culture. For the past month, in addition to learning what I need to learn in order to do well with work-related matters, I've also had to try to figure out what the unstated limits are with regards to my choice of fragrances at work.

Things began on a worrisome note. On my first day, I saw on the pixelboard ...
