Reviews of specific fragrances - sometimes carefully thought out, and sometimes off-the-cuff! In either case, these are thoughts about specific fragrances.

  1. If Bal a Versailles is Dirty, then I Like Dirty

by , 3rd August 2008 at 07:06 AM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
Jean Desprez Bal a Versailles is one of my favorite fragrances. In fact, it and Guerlain Shalimar, are the greatest temptresses in my fragrance wardrobe. I have more "backup" bottles of Bal and Shalimar, always in vintage formulation, than I should ever have if love of fragrances was based on rational thought! Bal and Shalimar are famously rich fragrances targeted at women, but I love them and I think they work fabulously well on me. That makes them my favorite girls in my entire wardrobe... ...

  2. Monsieur Balmain Tells Me It's Not Summer Yet

by , 14th May 2008 at 09:54 PM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
I checked the forecast for today, and it says it'll be a high of 20*C (68*F). That's decently warm, I think. Not sweltering summer heat by any stretch, but considering we're just rolling through Spring now, I was looking forward to decently warm weather. Unfortunately, it was not to be. It's actually chilly outside. But I should have known something was up. One of my favorite summer fragrances, much like the famed groundhog of Groundhog Day, refused to come out today.

    Warm weather plus ...

  3. Where's the Tiger in Dzing!?!?

by , 16th March 2008 at 08:34 PM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
Fragrances and our appreciation of them can be curious things. Take Dzing! for example. It seems pretty widely acknowledged that this one is a veritable circus-in-a-bottle, animalic and feral with an interesting twist. Personally, I love animalic notes and leather notes in fragrances, so with a sense of excitement, I tried my sample of Dzing! for the first time today...

And then wondered, what happened to the tiger in Dzing!?!?

Granted, I am still working my way ...

  4. 3-Stage Experience with Platinum Egoiste

by , 24th February 2008 at 01:02 AM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
    I love it.
    I love it not.
    I love it.

Actually, that's not quite true. I loved Chanel Platinum Egoiste when I first sampled it. I loved it so much that I have a huge pile of sample vials and two full bottles of it. Then, I almost hated it. It lost its appeal to me, and I thought I'd made a huge mistake stocking up so much of something so disappointing. Now.... well, now I don't love PE, but I am enjoying it again.

    So really it should be:

  5. Finding Comfort in Yatagan?

by , 10th February 2008 at 05:14 AM (The Adventures of a Canadian Fragonaut)
Caron's Yatagan has a reputation as a balls-to-the-wall, uber-masculine fragrance. It's almost certainly added to the list whenever someone asks on the Forums which fragrances project an I-Don't-Give-a-Damn-What-You-Think attitude. That would suggest that Yatagan is rather harsh, brutish and aggressive.

Yet, that's not at all the kind of vibe and impression that I get from Yatagan. Far from it.

I pick up the celery note, the pine note, and certainly the bitterness ...
