  1. 100 Fragrances Every Frag-Head Guy Should Try, part 23: Perfume As Art

So, in continuation from yesterday, if perfume can be art, what exactly makes a perfume art? For sure, it has to have had a lot of work put into its creation, with a keen attention to detail. I think it should be trying to make a point or paint a picture that’s larger than simply smelling nice. And, in a way, I think it should be non-mainstream, in that a perfume that’s trying to smell like everything else in order to be easy to sell can’t really be art in my opinion.

  2. 100 Fragrances Every Frag-Head Guy Should Try, part 22: What Is Art?

I think it’s officially time for another especially long-winded post. Basically:

    What Is Art?

Philosophically speaking, this has been argued for centuries by much greater minds than mine, so I’m certainly not going to make any great proclamations, but simply offer a few anecdotes and examples.

  4. 100 Fragrances Every Frag-Head Guy Should Try, part 20: Diptyque

So what’s the big deal about Diptyque? The most honest answer to that question would be their amazing candles, of course, but their collection of perfumes has some truly outstanding scents, as well as quite a few “difficult” pieces designed to appeal to connoisseurs, as opposed to the general public. As such, they’re a great example of a true “niche” company, more concerned with artistry and distinctive flavor than with living down to common expectations.

    Diptyque ...

  5. 100 Fragrances Every Frag-Head Guy Should Try, part 19: Serge Lutens

For today’s rather late installment, I give you my salute to another of the most important lines in perfumery today, Serge Lutens. Though best known for perfumes that masterfully balance sticky sweetness with spicy undertones over woody and resinous basenotes in tribute to the bazaars of the middle east, Serge also deserves kudos for his simpler florals and, on a deeper level, for his self-referential style, going back through the years to quote his older perfumes in clever ways that reward his ...
