Product Description Important reference on natural fragrance materials!
Do you have a passion for natural essential oils? This is a must-have book.
Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin contains practical descriptions of available materials, their origin, production and processing, appearance, odor and flavor type, evaluation, application and availability with brief notes on their main constituents, replacements and most common adulterants.
This unique treatise is divided into two parts. The first is a clear set of definitions and processing methods that are used to isolate the natural products described in the book. The second part, which is the meat of this text, is a series of more than 500 monographs on crude and processed perfume and flavor materials of natural origin including both vegetable and animal-based products. Examples of materials contained in this text are items of rare usage such as agarwood oil, flouve isolates and civet products for the perfumer and horseradish oil, lemon petitgrain oil to tagetes oil for the flavorist. In addition all of the commonly used natural materials can be found in the text. An appendix contains a table on the tonnage of world production over the 1955 1959 period for a number of important raw materials. Also found is a series of 88 groupings listing classification of aromas for the perfumer and warm-woody, balsamic-spicy-notes for the flavorist to carnation-like for the perfumer and fresh peppery and warm for the flavorist.

The most important book for a perfumer to own January 3, 2008 Anya McCoy (Miami, USA) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Arctander's book Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin has remained an industry "Bible" for decades for good reason: there is nothing comparable on the market. His breadth and depth of knowledge of the culture, extraction, organoleptic properties, market and, ultimately, how the natural aromatic could be used in fragrance or flavoring is unsurpassed. As a perfumer, educator and host of a group that studies natural perfumery, I instruct everyone who wants to study perfumery to "get Arctander's book, there is no substitute". There is an explosion in numbers of artisan natural perfumers worldwide. I truly feel that it would not be possible without this book. Every course of study, either individual, or in a class, is based on this volume. It remains on my desk, close at hand, and I use it constantly. As my students receive their copies, they report that they are immersed in the details and descriptions, exploring the world of aromatics as never before, and feel that their studies are being taken to a much deeper level. They are. They are also inspired and transported, much in the way a fabulous perfume affects a person, which is wonderful to watch - a book that alters and sweeps someone up in its magic.
