Ask Dr. Basenotes: Looking for my father's cologne

by Doctor Basenotes, 25 April 2008

" I am wondering if you can help me figure out what my dad used to wear in the 80's. I think it came in a green bottle and may have had a name similar to Aqua velvet. Anything information you have will be wonderful!!"

Jaclyn, USA

Doctor Basenotes Says: Ah 'father's cologne'. It can bring back many fond memories. Sadly, my father wore no fragrance - nor did he have any natural scent of his own. Very odd.

My good friend Lionel is the father to a great many children, each of whom is lucky enough to be reminded of him by the memorable scent of Toilet Duck.

Anyway, I digress. It sounds like the fragrance you are looking for is one by the name of Aqua Velva, originally created by JB Williams in the early part of the last century (The Williams company was acquired by Combe Inc a few years ago). The green variety you speak of is possibly one of two: Aqua Velva Frost Lime (1966), which is sadly no longer available - or - Aqua Velva Original Sport, which appears to be also discontinued in the USA.

You don't appear to be the only person looking for Aqua Velva - those clean-shaven chaps at badgerandblade.com have recently discussed these gems from Aqua Velva. It may be worth you keeping an eye out on eBay or alternately taking a sniff at some other lime fragrances.

Good luck in your search - here's some links that may be of some help to you:
