The solid Victorian walls of London's Royal Institution have echoed all manner of profound scientific questions over the last two centuries, except perhaps the one asked on Thursday night: How is an idea turned into a fragrance? This was the central theme of the third and final Science Of Scent presentation conducted by Will Andrews, an Evaluator at the Fragrance Design Team of Procter & Gamble Prestige.

In simple terms, Andrews' answer was teamwork, time and obsessive dedication, although he also made it clear over the course of the enthralling evening that few aspects of the world of perfumery can be described as simple.

Otto Kern has announced two new fragrances, Egoluxe for men and for women. The fragrances have been created by licensee, Maurer & Wirtz.

Egoluxe Woman , is said to be refreshingly fruity and modern, composed of soft and feminine flowers. The Egoluxe Woman range consists of a 30ml and 50ml Eau de Toilette priced €17.75 and €26.50 respectively, and a 30ml Eau de Parfum priced €22.00.

Roberto Cavalli and Coty Inc. have announced that they have signed a license agreement for the creation, development, and distribution of "Roberto Cavalli" and "Just Cavalli" fragrances. The new agreement with Coty will start in July 2011, when the existing fragrance license agreement (with ITF) for "Roberto Cavalli" and "Just Cavalli" expires.

New from Roxana Illuminated Perfume: Gracing the Dawn

Indie botanical perfume artist Roxana Villa will launch her newest fragrance Gracing the Dawn on opening night of the San Diego Comic Convention, July 21st. The perfume is part of a series titled Flowers of Fortune associated with artwork by her award winning husband Greg Spalenka.

The fragrance and inspired image is called Gracing the Dawn, a reference to the Three Graces from Greek mythology. Fantastical butterflies sit on the bough of a tree with freshly opened blossoms just as the first light of dawn illuminates the sky. The first edition of the 7ml flacons will feature a tincture of violets created this last Spring.

Orla now introduces her first signature fragrance; a light floral scent which has been inspired by nature. Orla partnered with KMI Brands, who are also behind Ted Baker fragrances, to create this scent.
 
Orla Kiely Eau de Parfum begins with top notes of green tea, peach and bergamot. The heart is a fragrant bouquet of rose absolute and delicate white flowers blended with a subtle touch of chocolate and osmanthus. Sensual musks, tonka bean, cedarwood and sandalwood combine to create the base.

Over a year after fragrance rumours started circulating, Jennifer Aniston launches her debut fragrance next week exclusively at Harrods. The fragrance is inspired by Aniston's memories and was created by perfumers at IFF. “I wanted this fragrance to be a personal library of scent memories. For example, my love of night blooming jasmine has lasted a lifetime. Growing up in California, I distinctly remember the scent of the jasmine on summer evenings,” says Aniston.

If you saw this on a bookshelf in a store, or came across it online, you might not be aware of the value of the information on essential oils and how it relates to you, a lover of perfume. After all, you’re probably a perfumista reading this, and you know essential oils are used in perfumery, but the book title seems a bit dry and academic.

If you’re reading this on Basenotes, know that there is some great perfumery information in this book, some of it not found elsewhere, or in bits and pieces in other, more expensive books. The directly-related perfume art and industry data probably makes up 20% of Essential Oils.

Not content with producing possible the best scent commercials this year, Old Spice is going one step further: The Old Spice You Tube channel now features Old Spice Man (Isaiah Mustafa) answering questions posted to him via the Old Spice Twitter and Facebook pages. Coty is said to have signed a deal to produce a fragrance for Poker Face singer Lady Gaga. The fragrance is expected to launch for Christmas 2010.

Lady Gaga, who has already created her own fashion line, has sold millions of records; her videos have been viewed online over a billion times and her twitter and facebook pages have five million followers and ten million fans respectively. No wonder Coty are keen to sign her up.
