• Fragrance in the News: Perfume Connection, The Pope, Puig, Scented Salamander.

Fragrance in the News Monday 19th March: Australian retailer Perfume Connection's future looks uncertain, Pope has custom scent made, Puig unpunished after compaints of sexy ad; and Scented Salamander celebrates 6th Birthday.

Australia's The Perfume Connection future uncertain

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Australian perfume retailer, The Perfume Connection, has closed some of its stores and say that the future of the company is uncertain. "[...]it racked up losses of almost $20 million in the past five years. A recent decision to close a fifth of its stores has failed to counter customers shifting to online shopping, while the company struggles with rising rents in shopping centres."

    Pope's Custom scent

Lots of places reported on the story that Silvana Casoli has created a fragrance for Pope Benedict XVI. Speaking Il Messaggero, Casoli said "I thought of the fragrances that the Pope could smell when he prayed in the garden, in front of the Grotto of Lourdes.". Notes apparently include lime, lemon verbena and grass.

No punishment for Puig perfume ad after complaints over sexual images is rejected

Cosmetic Design reports that a television advert by fragrance house Puig for its Carolina Herrera VIP 212 perfume (above) has been given the all clear by advertising watchdogs in the UK, after there had been claims that it was ‘inappropriate’ and ‘offensive’.

    Happy Birthday Scented Salamander

The blog, Scented Salamander celebrated its 6th Birthday last Saturday and had announced a change direction. Marie-Helene Wagner wrote:
To fête this anniversary, we're redefining the blog as a Culture & Beauty Blog, with the help of a Rousseauist motto: From Olfaction to Imagination.

What Rousseau really said is that the sense of smell is the sense of the imagination, paradoxically calling attention to the inherent weakness contained in the physical action of smelling. He therefore meant that smell requires more than the other senses a reliance on imagination.

Perfume then becomes a privileged means of accessing and giving a central role to a more visionary world on this blog....
