  • An interview with CPL Aromas perfumer, Beverley Bayne

As part of the Basenotes Community Fragrance Project, where CPL Aroma's are going to create a fragrance based on the ideas of the Basenotes Community, we are featuring interviews with the three perfumers who will be creating our fragrances for us. Second to be interviewed is Beverley Bayne, who is a Senior Perfumer.

Hello Beverley, how did you get into perfumery?

Completely by accident! I wanted to work in a laboratory, and I was lucky enough to find a job in a fragrance laboratory. A year later I started training as a perfumer.

One of my favourite things about being a perfumer is that you are always learning something new - that's such an important part of the job for me - you just don't stop learning.

    What are the challenges?

Legislation is our biggest challenge at the moment. It's becoming very complex.

If you had no brief, what type of fragrance would you create?

I love all the deep, rich, woody notes and I'd like to do something based around these notes - and the naturals, which are becoming harder to use due to certain points of legislation. I'd also like to be able to use the Nitro Musks again and a really good true bergamot oil.

Are there any fragrances you wish you had created.

Yes, Chanel 19 - great use of orris, woods and mosses - and also Coco Chanel. More recently, still on the Chanel theme, I think Coco Mademoiselle is a wonderful fragrance.

How do you feel about creating a fragrance for Basenoters?

Yes, it's going to be totally unique and we'll be able to do something really creative and not worry too much about costs and constraints, so it will be very interesting.

Hi Beverly! I had already been very enthused by reading your final statement, but in going back for a re-read, I see that you are also quite keen on several things that BNers do like - not to mention being a fan of Chanel 19, which is a fave around here. Already rather excited by this.

I completely forgot about Chanel's line. I love the chocolate notes in her fragrances. Of course she is a classic, but that is for good reason. She always kept things simple and elegant. It sounds like you all will create three amazing fragrances. I look forward to the end results.

  • We're Crowdsourcing Perfume...

    What is it?

Late last year we met with top fragrance house CPL Aromas with the intention of creating a Basenotes Fragrance. One of the key points from our meeting was that Basenotes is a community of fragrance enthusiasts, and wouldn't it be interesting to let the enthusiasts create a perfume...

    How does is work?

We solicited fragrance briefs from Basenotes readers at the end of 2009. Three briefs were chosen which will be turned into fragrances by the expert perfumers at CPL Aromas.

    That's not all...

The next stage is to send out variations of these three fragrances to Basenotes Members, we will use the feedback to hone the fragrances into the perfect scent for the fragrance enthusiast

    Re: Update coming soon

The project will still continue. There has been various setbacks my end and CPLs end. My apologies for the lack of communication, but I'll be sending everyone participating an email later today.

I really want to see this project coming through, and that we will have a proper Eau de Basenotes to show for it, but the lack of progress is alarming. Can we speed things up and have an end product...

I enjoyed the pure irony of seeing the title of this thread: Update Coming Soon, with the last post being Grant's, dated 28th June 2011 01:18 PM (which wasn't actually an update at all.) But, I'm...

It does seem a little unkind to all those who put an effort into this. :(

Well, I'll just come right out and say it... this project is dead in the water.

February will mark 2 full years since this initiative began, and members participating in the "sampling program"...

I'm not surprised. I apologise, again. I truly am sorry for how long this is taking. The fault lies purely with me, and not CPL.

Here's the current status. CPL currently have the feedback you all...

Oh, well. I hope the EdC worked out for you, if you bought it. Mitsouko was too mature for me when I wore it, and it probably still is now. But it has a following, including a few Kevins...
