  • The Basenotes Community Fragrance Project - how you can join in.

We are very excited by all of the briefs you have sent in to us for our project to create three Basenotes fragrances to celebrate the site's first decade. We will be spending the next few weeks sorting through them and deciding on our favourite three. Over the next seven days we will be publishing our initial interviews with the perfumers as well as sharing the fragrance briefs.

As soon as the three winning briefs have been selected, the perfumers at CPL aromas will begin developing them into fragrances. Once the creative process gets under way, we will be covering every aspect of it right here. Expect interviews with the perfumers, progress reports, video clips, fragrance descriptions and lots more. What is so unique about this project is that it allows everyone to be personally involved in the whole process and influence the fragrance design itself.

Sign up to the Sampling Program: For those of you who wish to be directly involved in the creative process, you may sign up here to receive a set of fragrance samples during each stage of submissions. You will receive between 12-15 samples in total, sent to you by post at different stages of the design, after which you will be able to log on and leave your thoughts, feedback and vote for your favourite modifications online. Your feedback and votes will be added to that of the initial group and will directly influence the fragrance development.

I am so excited about the Fragrance Brief Project. I keep thinking of things that I should've added, like the fragrance should have some moisturizing element or some non-citrus fruit smell that could have been added. After reading so many fellow Basenotes fans comments, I know this is going to be a tough decision. It's good to see so many people passionate about a common cause. The scents that I like always evoke some past fond memory, and sometimes, a future fantasy. Human body chemistry is odd like that. I am thankful that Basenotes has gone from conception to creation to innovation.

Hi, I would like to be able to sniff the final outcomes rather than be part of the sampling and creative process:happy. Will that be an option?

  • We're Crowdsourcing Perfume...

    What is it?

Late last year we met with top fragrance house CPL Aromas with the intention of creating a Basenotes Fragrance. One of the key points from our meeting was that Basenotes is a community of fragrance enthusiasts, and wouldn't it be interesting to let the enthusiasts create a perfume...

    How does is work?

We solicited fragrance briefs from Basenotes readers at the end of 2009. Three briefs were chosen which will be turned into fragrances by the expert perfumers at CPL Aromas.

    That's not all...

The next stage is to send out variations of these three fragrances to Basenotes Members, we will use the feedback to hone the fragrances into the perfect scent for the fragrance enthusiast

    Re: Update coming soon

The project will still continue. There has been various setbacks my end and CPLs end. My apologies for the lack of communication, but I'll be sending everyone participating an email later today.

I really want to see this project coming through, and that we will have a proper Eau de Basenotes to show for it, but the lack of progress is alarming. Can we speed things up and have an end product...

I'm not surprised. I apologise, again. I truly am sorry for how long this is taking. The fault lies purely with me, and not CPL.
