  • The Briefs:

Here are the fragrance briefs we received from the Basenotes members. Three of these will be turned into fragrances by three talented perfumers at CPL Aroma's: Beverly Bayne, Mike Parrott and David Ruskin.

The perfumers will create three versions of each fragrance to be evaluated by the Basenotes members - if you'd like to be part of the evaluation team, click here to find out how.

      Grant,

A belated suggestion - it might have been beneficial to have a poll set up on each brief (to make or not to make for example).

Dear all my fragrance brief is still not included in the list. I submitted it in due time in a pdf and answering all the questions suggested in the competition brief. During weekend Grant wrote to me that he would upload my fragrance description... but it is still not there. I wonder if other basenoters have had similar problems.
      And Dr_Rudi's suggestion is great.

      Plea for Respect and Civility:

      Dear Fellow Basenotes Members:

I am at a loss for words right now. My fragrance brief has recently been targeted, and some unfriendly comments have been left about me, my brief and commenters. I do not know most of you, but I think that every fragrance brief was passionate and well done. I ask that we are all respectful of each other when commenting on briefs and to refrain from using inaccurate and insensitive comments. Most of the ones that were left on mine have thankfully been deleted. Although this is somewhat a competition, it is a chance for us all as a group to create what can be three potentially innovative and amazing fragrances. It does not help anyone to be mean-spirited here, and it undermines both the growing community and the cause of this Fragrance Project. I beg us all to be respectful of each other's briefs and opinions each time we comment, and I wish you all the best of luck and success in your future endeavors.

I thought it was a thoughtful touch for you to publish all the fragrance briefs. Not many contests would do that, I think. Reading them is rally an education all by itself!

Just the same, I do wonder why the brief 'Brass' that I sent to you by email on Dec. 26 does not seem to be included.

I thought it met your guidelines. Was there an error? But I will resend it today, just in case!

maybe i am being egocentric but I wonder why my brief "Puna de Atacama" is not on the list...

all the briefs are really amazing!

I wasn't going to mention it until others of you said something, but only three of the four briefs I submitted appear on that list of 62 linked above.

I had no idea more than one brief could be submitted !

The instructions on writing briefs did say multiple briefs could be submitted:

Everyone is eligible to submit a brief and should you feel particularly creative and inspired, you may submit as many briefs as you wish (each brief must only describe one fragrance).

Thanks 30 Roses ! My teachers in school did say to read instructions more than once !I obviously forgot that one !

Well, Mysticknot, I thought I would be positively bursting with ideas for briefs, but when I finally sat down at the computer to come up with something, I drew a blank. It seems I am more a consumer than creator after all.

That was when my daughter looked over at me from the couch and said she had a perfume idea, and started talking a mile a minute while I took dictation at the keyboard as fast as I could. I was amazed, really. I didn't think this was her "thing." We underestimate our kids sometimes.

      Edit:
I do want to add that she is terribly interested in how this goes! She actually phoned me from school at lunchtime yesterday to ask if the results were posted-- and she's never phoned from school before unless she had forgotten some project at home.

@Quarry - I did publish all of your briefs to the list that went to the perfumers, however I missed it off this public one (it's there now)

@Halo & @Late-Hit - I'm very sorry but your briefs never showed up in my email for some reason (I've just double checked now). If this goes well though, I'm sure it won't be the last time we do something like this... My apologies once again.

    What is it?

Late last year we met with top fragrance house CPL Aromas with the intention of creating a Basenotes Fragrance. One of the key points from our meeting was that Basenotes is a community of fragrance enthusiasts, and wouldn't it be interesting to let the enthusiasts create a perfume...

    How does is work?

We solicited fragrance briefs from Basenotes readers at the end of 2009. Three briefs were chosen which will be turned into fragrances by the expert perfumers at CPL Aromas.

    That's not all...

The next stage is to send out variations of these three fragrances to Basenotes Members, we will use the feedback to hone the fragrances into the perfect scent for the fragrance enthusiast

    Re: Update coming soon

The project will still continue. There has been various setbacks my end and CPLs end. My apologies for the lack of communication, but I'll be sending everyone participating an email later today.

I really want to see this project coming through, and that we will have a proper Eau de Basenotes to show for it, but the lack of progress is alarming. Can we speed things up and have an end product...

I'm not surprised. I apologise, again. I truly am sorry for how long this is taking. The fault lies purely with me, and not CPL.
