• Katy Perry starts a (Royal) Revolution

    Katy Perry’s latest fragrance, Killer Queen’s Royal Revolution, hits the UK in July this year, following a London launch with perfumer Pierre Negrin in which she invited journalists to recreate her fragrance from its composite notes.

    The singer spoke to Basenotes about her first memories of smell (powder fresh diapers!), how her fragrances fit with her performance persona and what it was like working with Pierre Negrin.


    On her relationship with scent Perry told us “It’s like when you hear a song that you remember hearing [with your love] for the first time or it was your song when you were in a relationship, it’s like perfume has that special place too. I can remember the exact perfume of my first love… and I think that I have always been interested in the sense of smell. (to Pierre Negrin) Do you remember your first smell or the first smell that made a great impression?” Negrin responded “in fact very often it is your mother or someone close to you wearing a fragrance…that was mine, my mother”.

    The performer says of the fragrance itself “In some ways wearing fragrance is like putting on an invisible suit of luxurious armour. I want Royal Revolution to inspire women to make their own rules and embrace the idea that beauty and inner confidence can come together to become your secret weapon.”

    As the nose behind the scent, Firmenich’s Pierre Negrin was on hand to talk Basenotes through the notes. Starting with pink freesia and pomegranate, this sweet floral has a heart of sandalwood, orange flower and jasmine with the unusual Blackthorn before finishing with base notes of musk and vanilla orchid.

    The fragrance, presented in teal and gunmetal packaging and made under the Coty umbrella, will be available nationwide in the UK in eau de parfum from July 2014. The 30ml bottle will retail at £23.50, 50ml at £29.50 and 100ml at £38.50.
