• Wedding Smells: A Fragrant Royal Wedding Round-Up

Apparently, there's a wedding on Friday, so what better excuse for Basenotes to cash-in on celebrate - the upcoming wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton by having a look at what the fragrance world have been doing to commemorate the special day, and speculate as to what they might wear.

      The Fragrances.

Many houses have launched a scent to celebrate the wedding, however there is no word from The Palace as to what Catherine Middleton or Prince William will wear on the big day.

ICP (Creed's North American distributor) were ahead of the game on this one. Five years ago, they sent Kate the first bottle of Royal Ceylan. And Vera Wang's been making not only wedding dresses, but fragrances with Princess in the title for years.

Bringing us more up to date though are houses that have launched something specifically for the Wedding. In no particular order:

      Yardley Royal English Daisy

Yardley launched Royal English Daisy back in March. It's a limited edition scent, which was inspired by Kate Middleton. Notes include green leaves, apple, hyacinth, white rose, sandalwood and musk. (Available as 50m EDT, with body products)

      Floris Wedding Bouquet

Wedding Bouquet, again inspired by Kate, draws inspiration from previous Floris wedding fragrances and adds a “modern twist using a white flower theme”. Notes for the fragrance include: Bergamot, Lemon, Lily of the Valley, Marine notes, Jasmine, Orange blossom, Stephanotis, Musk and Sandalwood

According to Floris, the floral notes were chosen for specific reasons.

      Jasmine to signify eternal love
Lily of the Valley says ‘you have made my life complete’
Orange Blossom signifies innocence and marriage
      Stephanotis signifies happiness in marriage

Kim Weisswange - Wedding Perfume : William and Catherine

Germany-based Kim Weisswange said in the press that she had been commissioned to create the fragrances, but this was later denied by the Palace. The two scents are named 'William' and 'Catherine' and apparently "underline the [couple's] character and personalities."

      Clive Christian No.1

Clive Christian, whose royal connections come from acquiring the Crown Perfumery, have created a special set of their No.1 Scents to present to the couple. A limited number are also available to buy.

      Grossmith - Betrothal

Grossmith was founded in 1835, and the house was revived in 2009 by Simon Brooke, the great, great grandson of the founder. Betrothal, was originally produced to celebrate the wedding in July 1893 of Princess Mary of Teck and Prince George (Prince of Wales and Duke of York). They subsequently became King George V and Queen Mary, the grandparents of Queen Elizabeth II.

Betrothal will be relaunched at the beginning of May in three locations in London and in Paris, Dusseldorf, Rome and Prague. It is described as a modern creation which is a fresh floral bouquet with a subtle, warm silky drydown. Notes include citrus notes, floral bouquet of Rose de Mai, Jasmine, Ylang-Ylang, warm woods, vanilla and vetiver.

Tiny Idols - Prince and Princess

Housed in what looks like rejects from Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Lovers collection, these two scents apparently have notes that "combine to bring a sophisticated yet exuberant scent".

The Perfumer's Guild - Royal Bouquet

Royal Bouquet was created in 2005 by Liveryman John Bailey to celebrate and commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Grant of Royal Charter to The Worshipful Company of Gardeners in 1605.

The Company has the privilege of providing the Queens bouquet at Coronation and replicas for anniversaries. John was honoured to create a very special presentation of Royal Bouquet in a cut glass crystal flacon for Her Majesty the Queen on the occasion of her 80th birthday, June 15th 2006 which he hand delivered to Buckingham Palace – a very special gift from The Worshipful Company of Gardeners.

Royal Bouquet is blend of floral essences incorporating rose, freesia, jasmine, lily of the valley, orange blossom, on a long lasting base with Florentine iris. Presented in a 30ml natural spray flacon as an eau de parfum

It is available as a new presentation to commemorate the wedding -in a Tasselled oriental style flacon, with 5ml of rich perfume oil.

      Lancome

Lancome as far as we know aren't doing anything, but it feels a missed opportunity not to launch O Oui!, as The Royal Oui.

      Other Celebrations

Some houses aren't making special fragrances, but have got bunting and aren't afraid to use it - here's a quick round up...

Penhaligon's will be serving afternoon tea and champagne on the day, and have been decorating their windows (above), as have Jo Malone (below)

Ormonde Jayne however, have helped make a cake in Harrods.

      The Big Day

So, what will Wills and Kate be wearing on the big day. Well, Basenotes obviously knows as all people in England actually know the Queen.

As there is a recession on, they don't want to be seen to be splashing out, so Kate will be wearing So...? Kiss Me, which describes the moment in which Prince William will be asked to kiss his bride. William will be spraying over Lynx Africa to celebrate the continent in which he asked Kate to marry him.

Remember folks - you heard it here first! And you can watch the wedding being streamed live on YouTube on Friday. How modern are they?

So, what fragrances do you think the Royal couple should wear on the big day?

The Tiny Idols bottles made me laugh!

I hope they don't wear any of the ones made especially for the wedding, but whatever they prefer themselves.

Even if they don't reach for a bottle of Creed, Creed will say that they did.

Fantastic drawing, Grant. Someone should turn it into a banner and wave it around at The Mall.

I think they might both want to try a Penhaligon's scent on the day.

There are so many good ones to try...

Quercus for William and Elisabethan Rose for Kate...

Above all, we wish them both a long healthy happy life together...

I thought Penhaligon's for him and Floris for her...

Maybe Blenheim Bouquet for him, I found him to be very traditional, but I think her will not wear an old scent... I see her very modern and unaware of rigid british traditions... so ... I do not know why and what but maybe a very surprising election for the british standars...
