My beloved spouse and I are bowing out of our routine lives for a week to cruise around the Alaskan Panhandle for a few carefree days. I'm not promising I won't show up a bit on Basenotes, but if the trip is interesting at all, I doubt I'll be around much.
We're flying up to Seattle tomorrow and boarding the ship. Monday will be a day at sea. Tuesday we'll cruise Glacier Bay (our northernmost point) and be awestruck amid the ice. Wednesday is our longest day ashore, at Juneau. Thursday, we'll spend some time in Sitka, which I especially look forward to for the relics of Alaska's Russian past, which (I'm told) are the most numerous there. Friday, we're in Ketchikan, where we hope to renew an earlier acquaintance with a Tlingit community at Saxman. Friday afternoon to Saturday evening we are sailing back to Victoria, BC, where we'll be in port for the evening until midnight. Sunday, we're back in Seattle long enough to catch the flight home.
We plan to luxuriate in the long sunsets (barring rain). We're also looking forward to some pampering and good food, a couple of formal nights (we've packed our dinner jackets), and a lot of plain old relaxation. Here's a pic of us on the formal night of our first Alaskan cruise in 2002:
