the Heartbreak of Discontinued Fragrances

Rate this Entry
It must be admitted that a large portion of my fragrance hobby is an attempt to find scents that are attached to the most powerful moments and moods of my youth. I found this Andy Warhol comment on Scentbird's website regarding the experience of perfume:

"I switch perfumes all the time. If I've been wearing one perfume for three months, I force myself to give it up, even if I still feel like wearing it, so whenever I smell it again it will always remind me of those three months. I never go back to wearing it again; it becomes part of my permanent smell collection. Smell really is transporting. Seeing, hearing, touching, tasting are just not as powerful as smelling if you want your whole being to go back for a second to something. It's a neat way to reminisce."

This quote represents perhaps the best summary I've ever read explaining how fragrances can become so powerfully etched into the memory, the blood, and the heart. It is also the reason I grieve for so many discontinued fragrances that I doubt will ever be replicated in any way. As I said, a part of my hobby is continually seeking out and trying fragrances with the distant hope that I will find them again under a new name. Youth, once captured or spent, is rarely found again.

Such an amazing post! You are reading my thoughts. That's why we decided to launch Scentbird. We believe that we can learn people to collect their memories with the help of perfume like Andy Warhol and you did.

Hi, so many discontinued fragrances caught my eye. I am an E-commerce merchant that works with the largest warehouse in New York that continues to produce many of these fragrances. If I can be of any help, let me know which fragrances you are desiring and I can check the warehouse to see if they still stock it. My website although I don't have all of the fragrances there is http://profsanchezholistichealing.com

I am thrilled at the idea that I could find some things this way, but I'm also realistic that some of these will be lost to time since they were discontinued in the early 1980s. I plan on making a list and sending it to you at some point in the near future. Thank you.

Unfortunately, you are correct in being realistic. There are many discontinued fragrances that will only be a lasting memory. But the good news is that some of your favorites might still be around especially if they are imported from Europe. I know for a fact that the warehouse has a place for hard to find fragrances and discontinued as well. I look forward to reviewing you list to see if I can be of any assistance. Take care.

Yep, that's how I came to Basenotes too. Looking to find a scent to rebound with. Found plenty!

This was one of the best perfumes I ever had. Impossible to find.

Hi. I'm curious if you can see if they have Fahrenheit in the older three color box? I have been looking around for it but so far no luck.
