The Unexpected Overtakes JaimeB

Well, we're back from our Hawaii vacation — we got back a week ago, to be exact — and it was beautiful. With some regret and apology, I want to leave details about that for another time.
The vacation was fine, wonderful even; on getting home, however, things took a different turn. After a day or so, I started to feel some discomfort in the abdomen. I thought I must have picked up a stomach virus in Hawaii, which seemed to be confirmed by developing a fever. I went on this way until mid-week, when I began to suspect that it might be appendicitis. The symptoms weren't quite the same as the ones you usually hear about, and I guess that sort of gave me an excuse to be in denial about it. After three days, though, I became worried and called my HMO's advice line.
The advice nurse told me the symptoms I was having were a little ambiguous, and that I ought to go in and see my doctor to get a firm diagnosis. I did, and to make a long story short, a CT scan revealed that it was indeed appendicitis.
So, the night before last, they did a laparoscopic appendectomy, the least invasive procedure they could do. They held me for a day afterwards, to make sure I was on the road to recovery. The surgery was pretty straightforward: the appendix was inflamed, but hadn't burst.
I had never had any type of surgery before. You can imagine that I approached the experience with a certain degree of apprehension. I've got to say that the staff at the hospital were all excellent and very supportive. They had to tell me all the horror stories of what could happen if things went badly, of course, but they also reassured me that my case seemed to be more routine. Fortunately, I'm in pretty good shape for a dude my age (or so the doctors said) and I seem to have made it through fairly well.
So now I'm home, on pain meds. That should explain if anything seems weird about my writing. Just in case, I'm going to be brief today, and leave the Hawaii stories and pictures for later.
My experience of Basenotes has always been one of wonderful support and caring, so I just want to thank you all in advance for any expressions of support and any good wishes. Hang on; the next blog post should be a lot more fun!
