This isn't quite a review, just my thoughts on my particular bottle of vintage Egoiste.
I loved my Egoiste mini which was bought new, and lots of people seem to think the vintage formulation was better or much better, especially the sandalwood note. I looked for a bottle on Ebay, from a seller with strong feedback, and took the plunge.
My experience has been interesting. At first I thought, everyone is right, this is better than the current formula, more dense. But I noticed something worriesome. When I wear Egoiste from this bottle, after a short while, I can barely tell that I'm wearing a scent at all. This doesn't fit with what I had heard, that Egoiste was somewhat of a powerhouse scent, and one should go lightly when wearing it. Also, my experience with my mini bottle was different. The newer formula did seem different, maybe a bit thinner, but I could definitely tell it was there for hours, and it seemed to shift and morph about with the passing of time, as the different notes "came out" on my skin.
I wasn't sure if I was just having olfactory fatigue, or if my vintage cologne had faded due to storage issues (maybe stored in a hot warehouse). The box was sealed in plastic when I got it, and everything looked legit, box and bottle. And the source seemed fairly trustworthy. But the last time I wore it out and about, I asked a friend for his opinion and he could barely smell it. So, it's not just me. I suspect the scent has faded due to being stored in overly warm temps.
I'm not sure what if anything to do about this, but it makes me sad because this is one of my favorite scents, and I want to smell the awesome power of the vintage scent that so many rave about. I'm kind of wary of trying to buy another vintage bottle but I do think I might get a backup of the current formula.
As for my vintage bottle, I will keep it and maybe use it in combination with the new formula, or maybe use it to accent my Bois des Iles when I wear that. I certainly won't try to sell or swap it, perhaps some day I'll give it away but I wouldn't want someone else to have the same experience with this bottle, so it will probably just stay in my collection. And from here on out, I'm probably going to buy current formulations unless something has been discontinued and isn't currently available.
