Elizabeth Arden


Florence Nightingale Graham born in 1878 in Canada of English parents; she started training as nurse but, horrified by the sight of blood, worked in a laboratory instead.
Opened first beauty salon on Fifth Avenue in 1910 and first cosmetic line in 1915. Expanded into toiletries as well as perfumes and cosmetics. Changed name in 1915. Died 21.10.66. Company acquired by Eli Lilly & Co in 1971; bought by Faberge in 1987, merged into Unilever in 1989. Company split into two smaller companies: Elizabeth Arden and Parfums International. The Elizabeth Arden side, looked after all of the Arden cosmetics and fragrances, while Parfums International created fragrances for Nino Cerruti, Valentino, Karl Lagerfeld and Chloe.
On 31st October 2000, Unilever sold it's Arden business, to US company, FFI Fragrances for $225 million, as part of Unilever's program to shed operations that don't meet the company's strategic needs.
FFI is based in Miami Lakes, produce fragrances by Bogart and Halston.
On completion of sale, FFI decided to trade under the Arden name., in cluded in the sale was the Elizabeth Taylor brands of Passion and White Diamonds. Unilever kept control of the Parfums International brands (Cerruti, Valentino, Lagerfeld and Chloe) In 2003, Elizabeth Arden acquired the license for Gant USA fragrances from Romella.

Harriet Hubbard Ayer, USA Established by Harriet Hubbard at East 34th Street, New York in 1886; born in 1850 in Chicago; renowned for her HHA label which she created in 1886, launched her first perfume in 1922; also produced toiletries and cosmetics. She also sold perfumes under the pseudonym of Lillian Dodge in 1922

Paloma Picasso
Established in 1984 in Paris by Paloma Picasso, daughter of Pablo Picasso and Françoise Gilot; born on 19th April 1949; her mother was the daughter of the ‘nose’ and perfumer Emile Gilot. Shows her first jewellery collection in 1971

Parfums Paloma Picasso 1984 In association with L’Oreal, created by Francis Bocris of Creations Aromatiques; a floral aldehyde chypre parfum with top notes of bergamot, neroli, and lemon, heart notes of jasmine, rose de mai, hyacinth, ylang-ylang, lily of the valley, orris, coriander and clove, on base notes of patchouli, sandalwood, oak moss, amber, vetiver and musk, classified D3f. Presented on a flacon in the shape of a glass ring designed jointly by Paloma Picasso and Bernard Kotyuk and made by Verrières Brosse. The launch advertisement featured a portrait of Paloma taken by Richard Avedon
Minotaure Paloma Picasso Parfums 1992 Created by Creations Aromatiques; a crisp woody oriental masculine edt with top notes of citrus, bergamot and tarragon, heart notes of geranium, jasmine and oceanic scents on base notes of vetiver, vanilla, amber, musk and sandalwood. Presented in a sandy ‘pebble’ rounded bottle with a neat round black stopper designed by Paloma Picasso. Named after the Minotaur- the Cretan half-bull, half-man, which had been a recurring motif in her father’s paintings.
Tentations Paloma Picasso Parfums 1996 Created by IFF, a floral-woody-spicy edp with top notes of vine leaves, heart notes of jasmine, rose, peppercorns, fennel seed, cinnamon, clove, star anise and fazara on base notes of agar wood, cedar, frankincense and myrrh. Presented in a graceful tapering column crowned by a gilt stopper and having a black metal filigree collar designed by Paloma Picasso.
