My Perfume Wardrobe : Alison Hansen, Fashion Illustrator

Fashion Illustrator, Alison Hansen tells us about her perfume wardrobe.

Tell us about yourself – My name is Alison Hansen and I am a fashion and beauty illustrator based in the UK. I split my time between studio space in Warwick and London. My style is linear with lots of expression and movement, with splashes of watercolour.

Why do you wear perfume? – I wear perfume because I don’t feel like whatever outfit I am wearing is complete until I have perfume on! Perfume also gets you in the mind-set for whichever occasion you are going to, whether it be a summer picnic or an evening black tie event.

What was the first perfume you fell in love with? – My earliest memories of a particular perfume are of Charlie by Revlon. I think a relative got me a bottle of it for Christmas when I was really little, and it holds a nostalgic place in my heart! I felt so grown up wearing it !

What was the first perfume you bought for yourself? – My next door neighbour’s mom worked at a fragrance counter so she always had tons of fragrances around her house. Through her I discovered Anais Anais and I fell in love with the pastel bottle and the sweet, playful and floral fragrance. I’ve asked others too around my age and they loved this one too, I think it was very popular for teens in the ‘80s.

What is the first perfume you owned? – That would have to be Charlie, which was bought for me as a Christmas present by a relative when I was really little.

What perfume is your go-to wear anytime fragrance? – I really like the new Chanel No 5 L’Eau. A friend recommended it to me, so I tried it. I love it as it’s a lighter, fresher and younger version of the original Chanel No 5, which of course is a classic. Because it’s so subtle and light it’s great for everyday use.

What is your favourite fragrance for evenings? – It has to be Viktor and Rolf’s Flower Bomb. I’ve loved it since it came out in 2005 and I particularly love it for evenings, as it’s very fresh and sweet, and of course very floral which I like. It’s just a very glamorous and feminine perfume which is great to compliment evening wear. I just love the bottle and the name too; it’s a perfect name to describe the perfume.

Are there any particular perfume ingredients that you are drawn to? – I always just love very feminine and romantic floral scents, and I like warm musk undertones. I am a sucker for the scent of roses….. I also like citrusy ingredients for day time wear as they always add a really fresh touch to any perfume.

Are there any particular perfume houses that you like? – I have to say I like Chanel, purely for the heritage and weight and history of the brand. I love that Marilyn Monroe was the face of Chanel No.5. I especially like how they continually update their original perfumes with fresh new versions, to give their fragrances a new and modern twist. I love that they have Lily-Rose Depp as their latest face for Chanel No.5 L’Eau.

Where do you keep your perfumes? – I keep them on the top shelf of a free standing bathroom cabinet that I bought from a flea market that I really love. I love that the cabinet is old and looks vintage and that it has a glass door so you can still see all of the pretty perfume bottles on display.

How often do you wear perfume? – I try and wear a light and fresh perfume almost every day. And of course no evening outfit is complete without a splash of perfume.

What was the last perfume that you bought? – It has to be the new Chanel No.5 L’Eau.

What is on your perfume wish list? – My dream list of perfumes would include Marc Jacobs Divine Decadence Eau de Parfum, because I love the unique bottle and I really want to try the fragrance. I have heard it’s very sparkly and has notes of Champagne ! Also on my list is Jo Malone’s Peony and Blush Suede Cologne, L’eau Bleue by Miu Miu, and J’adore Eau de Parfum by Dior.

Have you ever bought a fragrance before smelling it? – I bought Stella by Stella McCartney without really labouring too long on what the perfume smelled like, as I totally fell in love with the rich berry tones of the bottle, mixed with the touches of gold on the packaging… It’s a good job I really like it !

What would your fragrances be if you could only keep three? – If I could only keep three fragrances, I think it would have to be CK One, for nostalgia’s sake, as it just really take me back to the freedom and excitement of the Nineties. It’s also a very clean fragrance which I love. I would also keep Chanel No 5 L’Eau as I just got that one and I love it. I think it’s such a successful update. Then I would also hang onto anything by Marc Jacobs as I pretty much love every scent he makes, as they are always crisp and citrusy, not too young but not too stuffy either.

Great article Alison! I love No 5 L'Eau, it's one of my favorites, too!

Just like Habit Rouge, I disliked No.5 . Too baroque.

Leau has solved the problem for both No5 and HR.

A fragrance adderall for adderall generation.

A Chanel fan myself, I bought L'Eau No. 5 for my wife because I want to smell it often. Excellent illustrations, btw.
