Basenotes Scratch & Sniff

01st April, 2019

If you have a monitor or device made in the last three years you may be able to take advantage of our new Scratch ’n’ Sniff technology.

Each supported fragrances page in the fragrance directory now features a scratch ’n’ sniff panel. Simply scratch the panel, and your device will emulate an approximation of the fragrance.

How does it work?

Similar to an optical illusion, the technology works by tricking the brain into thinking it is receiving a smell. The screen will display a moving image, invisible to the naked eye, which sends messages to the part of the brain known as the olfactory bulb. Provided you have previously smelt the ingredients of the fragrance, your brain will be able to recreate the smell. The more things you have smelt in your life time, the more accurate the recreation will be.

Other uses for the technology include immersive experiences in video games and movies. Later in the year Instagram are incorporating a version that lets you smell the meals posted by hipsters on instagram.

Troubleshooting

The fragrance page I am on doesn’t have a scratch ’n’ sniff panel

The majority of older and discontinued fragrances do not currently work with the new technology as the fragrances are no longer available to create the samples from. We are working on this, by sourcing older fragrances to use for the system, so stay tuned.

How do I know If my device supports the latest technology?

The system currently works on the following devices:

.......................by tricking the brain into thinking it is receiving a smell.

        Similar to Molecule 1 then?

I like that this is tasteful, that the bottom line does not seem to be placed the highest here and that in the underlying conversation with data, this has been explained to it.

Am i the only one who only smells Drakkar Noir?

      • jujy54 | 7th April 2019 14:54

Hey, Grant, that was tots brillz! We should be grateful that Gogle hasn't figured out how to coopt scent!

      • Ken_Russell | 8th April 2019 12:01

Even if it would have been for real, would have still first and foremost blamed the absence of any scents on lacking the Iphone/non-Apple smart phone/software in general etc. sort of updates, features and such
