Terre d'Hermès by Hermès

I wear it if I am unable to make up my mind what fragrance to use that day - is is inoffensive, fades remarkably quickly and can then be replaced with whatever scent I eventually choose (usually X by Clive christian or the all-conquering Yatagan)

A polite, citrus, hint of tangerine and grapefruit scent with no real balls. Top note is bright and actually pretty appealing first thing on a summer's morning, but it dries down to somewhat artificial, sugary ghost of itself within all too short a time.

Yatagan by Caron

The reference to geranium puzzles me greatly - I have never been able to pick out the slightest hint of anything floral in this unique fragrance.

And unique it most certainly is. People will ask what you are wearing, not always certain if they like the scent or not. It has an uncompromisingly direct strucure that speaks (shouts!) "none of your omni-sexual Calvin Klein concoctions here!" A man's scent through and through - a rare thing today.

A daily wearer for me.

Habit Rouge by Guerlain

Very dated, now. A weird, astringent, artificial character that lacks any real complexity. I have noticed that this scent seems to be popular with smokers, possibly because it has sufficient oomph to cover up the vile small of stale tobacco.

Though I own a bottle (bought on a friend's suggestion) I cannot say I use it that often. Won't choose it again.

X for Men by Clive Christian

I can only agree with the positive reviews here - a wonderful, spicy scent that will always be in my collection.

The only point to add is that this is very much an evening scent, IMHO. It's warm, brown, sultry nature seems totally inappropriate on a summer's day - but apply in just the right quantity (a couple of squirts is ample!) before heading out for the evening, and you will love it.

Certainly not cheap, but worth every penny.
