Brandy by Brandy

The company was nice enough to send me a sample, and I don't think I can do it justice. The package says apple, peach and herbs. I don't smells anything sweet or peachy. I do not smell a brandy or boozy note. I do not smell any cinnamon or any warm types of spices.

To me, it smells like an apple pipe tobacco tonic with herbs--maybe mint, sage, hay? (I could also say it smells a little like Tazo apple tea--the one in the green packaging). This is very refreshing and has a spa or aromatherapy feel to it, but in no way smells like a room fragrance. It is really interesting and extremely pleasant and addictive. I find it truly unisex, not tipping in either direction. Despite this light herbal/tea feel, this lingers for quite a while. I'm very impressed--may need to buy this.

Black Orchid by Tom Ford

I am in love. This is brilliant. I have been wearing this for a few days now. It is so complex. I get so many things that are not supposed to be in here. Humor me: almond cookie; fig newton; a hint of iodine; aquatic note; mud; incense; old flowers; some sort of woody note; maybe chocolate; and mushrooms the day before they go bad. This changes and changes and changes again--and I love every moment. In the morning, after a day of wear, it has that morning-after thing going on. This scent feels so personal that I might not recognize it on someone else. LOVE, I tell you--LOVE!

Viva La Juicy by Juicy Couture

Concentrated frozen orange juice meets pineapple upside down cake meets pine-sol. This is not as sweet as I thought it would be. Where am I getting the pine note? Maybe it's because it has a bug spray feel to me--the intensity maybe--like an 80s scent. I can almost feel that icky numb feeling on my tongue--like Off sprayed too close to my face--and the smell. I don't like this one, but it is not as bad as my associations are making it sound. This is heavy and it lingers a long time, but doesn't change much. I'm not impressed.

Sensuous by Estée Lauder

I sniffed the test strip wet and immediately sprayed my neck and wrists. Wow--delish! This is woods, amber, creamy, lovely! It is subtle. There is nothing offensive or surprising here. This is a nice scent--but nice done very well. This is a year round, round the clock--I slathered myself in 90 degree weather--my coworkers liked it (ok, I'm the boss), but my husband liked it too. I'm not an expert, but I cannot think of many very popular mainstream scents this heavy on the woods--except HDuff w/Love, which is sweeter (fruitier) than this (and I think underrated). I love wood notes, but even checking my subjectivity, I think this will be a mainstream hit.

Jacomo for Her by Jacomo

I bought this based entirely on a review at the Scented Salamander, to which I was directed from the musk hall of fame. I usually go out and sniff first, but I found this huge bottle on-line for about $18, including postage, and took a leap. The first wet whiff was cedar chest that grandma unfortunately felt the need to fill with mothballs--cedar, metalic, floral. Ick. It immediately gets better and then good. After 10 minutes, this becomes cedar, slightly salty, dried roses and light indistinguishable florals--that's what I get. It's very subtle, not at all sweet, and quite sophisticated. It's gone too quickly even when applied heavily. I smell nothing resembling musk--certainly not a cheerful musk like Narciso, but this is a so-called skin scent. While it lasts, it's quietly sexy.

Coney Island by Bond No. 9

I love this one! I read the notes, and I don't really smell any of them distinctly. This one is unique, well blended and unrated in my opinion. (Why does Chinatown get all the attention? Who wants to smell like a pawn shop?) To me, this smells like the county fair (not the 4H tent mind you)--it's cut grass and carmel apple--sitting in the middle of the field, awaiting the 4th of July fireworks. Yum. This is addictive. Unisex.

Cashmere Mist by Donna Karan

Am I the only one for whom this smells like strong commercial bathroom air freshener? I cannot recover from the first whiff, which gives me that creepy feeling that my surroundings are likely unclean. Yes, the drydown is better. I smell licorice, bubblegum, baby powder and something floral, all a headachy and artificial. Not for me.

Midnight Fantasy by Britney Spears

I bought this for my perfume-loving daughter for her 4th b-day. The bottle is appealing and the scent is sweet, not sultry. She loves it, of course, and it works well with her watermelon shampoo and Barbie soap. However, it has slowly drawn me in as well. I get the plum, strawberry and freesia, but there is an effervescent quality too, reminiscent of ginger ale. I would not call it spicy. I'd call it spice-light. It smells good on 4 and 40, which is no small accomplishment. Very pleasant and long lasting on us--light-hearted and mood lifting.
