California for Men by Dana

California really surprised me. I was expecting a pleasant generic drugstore fragrance and what I got was a close clone of Green Irish Tweed by Creed. No kidding. It's stronger than GIT, and a little bit synthetic, but it's the closest thing to GIT I have ever smelled. The longevity is very good, as is the sillage. Nice and green. Very nice.

Corduroy by Zirh

I was completely and totally disappointed with the strength of Corduroy. I like the scent that I can detect, but it's so weak that even if I soak myself with it there is no sillage, and the little that is there lasts less than an hour. I like to at least be able to smell a cologne on myself and the only way to be able to smell this is with the nose pressed up against the skin. I will probably throw my bottle out because I will never wear it and it's not strong enough to use as a room deodorizer spray. Useless. Corduroy is a total waste of my time and money. Zero out of 5 stars.

Visit by Azzaro

The very first scent that hits me in Azzaro Visit is the heavy Cedar smell. I have not found any other fragrance that has this strong cedar aroma to it. It triggers very pleasant thoughts for me. It brings back memories of being at the cottage, out in the forest, cutting cedar into logs and then splitting them up into kindling for the fireplace. It really does smell like I'm standing on a bed of blue cedar chainsaw dust and axe chips. There is a nice light scent behind the cedar but I don't get any nutmeg. Maybe a light peppery, musky, incense... very very lightly though. To me, the only thing that stands out strongly is the woods. If someone told me that this is what a visit smells like, I would expect that I would be cutting wood during a visit to the country. With Azzaro Visit I get these found memories of being in the wilderness but without having to wrestle with a chainsaw all day, or the blisters from swinging an axe, and no mosquito or black fly bites. Very nice, and very different from anything else I've ever tried. Country fresh, in it's own way. Casual daytime wear for me.

Intimately Beckham Night Men by Beckham

This was a blind purchase, and I was pleasantly surprised. Givenchy Pi was the first thing that came to mind the first time I tried this one. Intimately Night is less sweet than Pi, and a little more spicy/woody. The mildly sweet spiciness is backed by a fresh-cut wood scent, with just a light touch of floral. The sweetness comes from the Patchouli in this, whereas in Pi the sweetness comes across as Vanilla. The light Patchouli mixes very well with the wood notes, giving it just enough sweetness to leave the focus on the spicy woods. When the woody top notes do subside, the spice lingers on. I don't get any citrus notes at all. My reference to Pi is not to suggest that I would substitute one for the other, the scents are very different, they just have a similar 'feel' to them. There is a time and place for both.

The sillage is on the 'close' side and the longevity is a little short for my liking... but I like this so much I want it to go on forever. It isn't really strong, or lasting, enough to get cloying, if used moderately.

Warm and comforting.

Chaps Musk by Ralph Lauren

Chaps Musk is a fresh everyday-wear fragrance for me, and IMO much better than the original Chaps. About 15 to 20 years ago I picked up a bottle at the drug store, not expecting too much for the low price. I was surprised that I got more compliments on it, from both men and women, then any other musk I had worn up to then. Some time after I ran out I went to get another one and it was no longer available. Recently I found a liquidation company on eBay that was selling a fragrance store's inventory. I picked up 5 bottles of cologne, 1 after-shave, and a deodorant stick.

To me, the original Chaps is too musky, it's the first thing that hits me, and it has a continuing slightly-sour note to it that I just can't identify. Chaps Musk is musky too, but the top and mid notes are fresher and cleaner smelling, so the focus is not so much on the musk as the regular Chaps seems to be. The lighter, sweeter notes stay on top for a long time so it doesn't tend to get sour. It's a little sweeter than Chaps but nowhere near as sweet (and generic smelling) as Royal Copenhagen Musk.

Sillage and longevity are both good. Maybe I would touch it up slightly after 4 or 5 hours to bring the fresher notes back up. If you like musk and want a low cost fresh musk, give Chaps Musk at try.

"Chaps Musk. Living without boundaries."
