The Dreamer by Versace

Talk about offensive :) In-your-face, bold, daring - the house of Versace should go back to their roots and try follow in the footsteps of their best offering called The Dreamer.

But then again...money talks.

M7 by Yves Saint Laurent

I was fortunate to get this as a gift years ago when it wasn't yet available in South Africa. I wasn't very happy, to say the least. It did change the way I perceive fragrances though - in a good way. The most memorable compliment was "You smell like Christmas - in the best way". Who was I to object?

Fast forward many years later until last week. M7 arrived, and it brought me the happiness I hoped for. The opening can be quite intimidating to noses who prefer fresh, aquatic and non-offending blends. But the ones who appreciate boldness has a gem in waiting. I can't comment on the different notes, but M7 makes me think of words like unusual, unique, sexy, offensive, daring, bold, take-no-prisoners.

I DO fragrances that don't try to please the masses! The love-hate ones on Basenotes are what I'm after...and M7 is right up there with A*men, Fahrenheit, Yatagan, L'Anarchiste - you know what I'm talking about :)

Chergui by Serge Lutens Les Salons du Palais Royal Shiseido

When I paid this kind of money for a fragrance, I want people to smell it. Fullstop.

The only good thing about this is that it smells nice...hence the neutral rating.

Zero sillage and projection on my skin. I should have invested in Opium PH, which is THE eau de parfum for men IMO.

By Man by Dolce & Gabbana

Why are the good ones always discontinued? I don't care for any other D&G but this!

It has been called a "trashy" lavender...and that's why I like it. It's spicy, heavy and longlasting. I find the peppery lavender opening quite intriguing, and the development into a skin scent that...projects!!! The contradiction makes me appreciate this hard-to-find gem even more. The basenotes remind me of a hot iron on a cotton shirt...a near-burning smell.

What other fragrance can boast development like this?

Rive Gauche pour Homme Intense by Yves Saint Laurent

Very similar to the original. I cannot speak of the individual notes. But, where I was disappointed in the longevity of the original, this one does stay forever! Very hard to find (here) - get it if you can.

Escape for Men by Calvin Klein

The first review I saw of Escape was in a fashion magazine, which defined it as a "water" fragrance. I was immediately put off - thoughts of Cool Water, Hugo (IMO) etc. Then my uncle gave it to me as a present. At first I was disappointed because I wanted CK1!!!

After a few days I realised what a gem it was to have in my wardrobe. Wearable on all occasions, whether it be formal or informal. Good longevity and sillage.

I've had many bottles, but like I said elsewhere, Basenotes made me venture into unknown territory! "I'll be back"!

L'Eau D'Issey pour Homme by Issey Miyake

An addition to Joe desire's comments. Had it once, twice and a third time. It's a compliment-getter. Excellent fragrance in my opinion.
One warning - be gentle on application after a late night out partying...it may lead serious reconsideration.

A*Men Summer Flash by Thierry Mugler

I searched high and low for this. Eventually I got to test IT and agree with previous posts. Nothing like the original at all. DO NOT BUY BLIND.

Pi by Givenchy

After finishing 4 bottles I'm stating the obvious. Heavy, sweet, very good longevity and sillage - all what I look for in a fragrance. This is the only Givenchy I've had and I have no need (yet) to get any other from this house. I'd like to have this in my wardrobe all the time, but after joining BN there are so many others I HAVE to try :-)

212 Men by Carolina Herrera

Contrary to many rewiews here, a very unique frangrance when I compare this to what I had or currently have in my wardrobe. The one thing that stands out to me is the longevity and super-excellent sillage - if I could give 212 10 stars I would. The only "problem" is that one's nose doesn't detect it after a while...
Make no mistake - after numerous experiments, this one made a huge impression. IMHO

Jaïpur Homme by Boucheron

I arrived at work one day and a colleague, who sits quite a distance from me, said "this is what my husband should smell like every day". Her words were good enough to justify Jaipur Homme Edp.

Opium pour Homme Eau de Parfum by Yves Saint Laurent

I salute, and then envy, the review submitted by graffham:

"There comes a time after years of wearing and appreciating the nuances of fragrance that one can see where one has been and the level to which one has evolved."

Had I known this one sooner, if only... He said what I wanted to, but couldn't put into words. I'm still new to this one and try to find the "fresh" notes I find in the Edt,
this one shall NEVER leave this wardrobe - if I can find it, as it's not sold here:-((( Please YSL!!! 10 thumbs up

A*Men / Angel Men by Thierry Mugler

From the lovers of this fragrance, everything has been said. This is something that will always be in my wardrobe. Love it or hate it, this one will always evoke a response. For the record - I LOVE it!

Lolita Lempicka Au Masculin by Lolita Lempicka

The second gourmand I ventured into after A*men. Had the aftershave first (discounted purchase) and didn't think too much of it (no longevity). And then!!! What I found in the Edt was what I was looking for in the aftershave. 15 minutes after application it kind if "disappears" on my skin but when it comes back...beauty for those us who believe in Oriental.
The rest has been said already.

Herrera for Men by Carolina Herrera

This was my first about ten years ago. Afterwards gone around and had others, but when Herrera for men was not in my wardrobe, I lacked something. I'm not able to comment on the complexity of the notes, but suffice to say, it's been one of the best I've ever come across. Citrus DOES NOT do it for me, but in this one, if DEFINITELY does. One of the only 2 imports I got for myself.

Opium pour Homme by Yves Saint Laurent

I agree with "nearfantastica" - this is not for the timid and those who play it safe! This was one of my first purchases(30ml - very safe!) and couldn't get enough of it. Sad to say, perfume prices here went up rapidly mid to late nineties and I had to make do without. Rediscovered it again and am on my 3rd 100ml! The only thing now is that I can't wait for the Opium EdP on order which receives even better reviews!!

Boucheron pour Homme by Boucheron

I got this on recommendation from guys here on Basenotes. I'm not one for citrus fragrances, but after reading the reviews here, thought I'd give it a try. Got it (EdP) for a good price too and I'm proud to say I am not disappointed. Just wondering when they'll launch a completely new fragrance.

Ghost Man by Ghost

This was my first blind purchase...and was I disappointed. An excellent fragrance with beautiful top, middle and base notes (my opinion). But is just wouldn't last. About an hour after application it was just gone. For almost a month I practically bathed in the stuff.
Then I read on this site about misting. Tried it and got much better output. Now I spray it on my skin from a distance further than usual and the effect: AMAZING!! Put it on at 7am the other day and could still smell it in bed at 10pm.
I am a happy man!!
