Mouchoir de Monsieur by Guerlain

Having read that this is the "masculine version of Jicky" ( a particular favourite of mine ) I began my search for this Guerlain classic, and I must say I think I finally have found what I was looking for. Not quite as floral ( lavender ) as Jicky, and with an intense note of civet that is right up front, Mouchoir de Monsieur is without a doubt my fragrance of choice. Because of the heavy civet, I would warn the curious to try it before you buy it, unless you are like me and know pretty much what to expect. Longer lasting on me than most of Guerlain's products ( like Eau de Coq and especially Eau de Cologne Imperiale ) it is well worth the price and the effort to find. Another reason why Guerlain is really the only fragrance house that matters.

Pi by Givenchy

Yummy, warm and vanilla. The only sweet-smelling fragrance I allow myself to wear. Super strong, lasts all day (careful with that atomizer, Eugene) Another great one from Givenchy.

Happy for Men by Clinique

Passes the test for everyday wear - accessible and affordable. This, for me, doesn't scream "I have cologne on!!!" and the citrus and cedar are nice together.

Touch for Men by Burberry

My favorite Burberry fragrance. The white musk is soft and warm, and the violet subtely floral - these two notes stay with me more than any other.
Rather a romantic smell, this one, and I only wear it at night.

Vetiver by Guerlain

A real classic and one of Guerlain's finest men's fragrances. The tobacco and cedar are quite distinctive and really grab me. The pepper is very sharp, and incredibly masculine. This lasts all day on my skin, it stands out in a sea of samey fragrances, and the bottle ( not to mention the color of the juice itself ) is beautiful.

Polo by Ralph Lauren

Pine Pine Pine. Absolutely revolting, and totally Eighties. This is worse that Obsession and Z14 combined. Its continued popularity is a mystery but I find every elderly man in Pawleys Island drenched in it. Fifty year old real esate agents and preachers come to mind when I smell it.

Polo Black by Ralph Lauren

I've no idea why this would be named "Black". Its smell reminds me of summer days and crisp, checked picnic tables. It is extremely casual. Even before I knew what was in it, I said "this smells like watermelons!" and I found out I was not too far off the mark ( the mango in this is right up front). Having said all that, I am quite fond of it.

Weekend for Men by Burberry

Not one of Burberry's best. The citrus is far too strong and this is the most "girly" of any man's fragrance I have ever smelled. The two times I tried it I was asked if I was wearing women's perfum.

Eau Sauvage by Christian Dior

Lasts longer on me than it does on others, judging from the reviews here. Half a day, perhaps. A favorite that I go back to again and again, and one that I always have in my arsenal. Popular with both sexes for a reason. It is neither feminine nor necessarily masculine; it exists in its own world, and that originality is the best compliment I can pay it. The citrus and vetiver are light and refreshing, and seem to combine as something greater than the sum of their parts ( at least on my skin ). Thankfully this one hasn't been done to death, like other "unisex" fragrances that were popular in the Nineties and refuse to go away ( paging CK One...). A undisputed classic from the master Dior.

Eau de Cologne Impériale by Guerlain

Hands down my all time favorite fragrance. Aboslute olfactory perfection. The cedar is a wonderful compliment to the citrus, giving it a delightfully crispy and refreshing edge. My one and only complaint is that it doesn't last very long at all - half an hour tops, even after a very liberal spray application. Do yourself a favor and buy this one on sale, as it won't last very long.

Fahrenheit by Christian Dior

A long time favorite of mine and I can completely understand its polorizing effect. This is a "love it or hate it" kind of fragrance with an exteremely distinctive smell. I am reminded of leather and cigars when I wear it, and an iris-type scent really comes through about an hour after I've put it on. On paper not such a appealing combination, to be sure. But I absolutely adore this one.

Obsession for Men by Calvin Klein

Try as I may to like this one, it was for so long just so incredibly common in my particular circle, that I simply cannot shake the mental connotations of Obsession. Everyone I encountered had applied way too much ( less is more, folks ) and just seemed so incredibly trendy. Brings back memories of last call desperation down at the local disco, circa 1989, and the dreaded acid wash jean with the pre-ripped knee. If ever a fragrance was stuck in a particular moment, it is CK's Obsession.

Givenchy Gentleman by Givenchy

I'm a huge fan of Givenchy, and I bought this one sight unseen ( and without having smelled it ) based upon reviews here, and upon my obsession with civet based scents. My initial impression was not that good - I was smelling it directly from the sprayer and not on my skin and it absolutely REEKED of patchouli. However, after a light spray on my skin, this magnificent fragrance opened up and fully revealed itself. Warm and rather like honey at times, with the hint of leather and civet coming and going. Thoroughly masculine and quite long lasting but not overbearing. Not too easy to find in my neck of the woods, but I got a great deal on a bottle through a mail order service. This is a new favorite.

Jicky by Guerlain

The Parfum version of this is the one to get. Expensive, to be sure, but worth every penny. The EDT is much cheaper and easier to find, but doesn't last as long and is not as purely "Jicky" to me. The Parfum is, in a word, heavenly. Heady and feral at times ( due to the civet, I am to assume )with just a wisp of lavender that comes and goes when I wear it. Jicky is the only unisex fragrance that matters.
