Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

Many moons ago, before Noah came out of the ark, I used to bathe myself in this before going on a girls night out. You might guess, in those days, I used to drink a bottle of martini before jumping in the cab with my girlfriends. Remember this is before ‘ladettes’ were invented. Now I am totally embarrassed, because I can’t think what I liked about it. I remember complaining my mum’s Estee Lauder smelled like cats urine, but this is much worse. Now when I see it or even get a tiny niff of it I cringe. It’s a bit of a creepy feeling, like meeting one of your old boyfriends, or someone’s walking over your grave…

J'Adore by Christian Dior

I adore J’adore. It is floral with woody undertones: it reminds me of fairies dancing in the woods, pipes playing, and a stream babbling away in the background. Can anyone remember ‘parma violet’ sweets? They were rather sickly but had a delightful scent, and to me are reminiscent of childhood days. J’adore is feminine and uncomplicated with ivy and orchid notes. On me is not very strong and lingers, although this may not appeal to anyone preferring something more powerful. Because it is not too overpowering it would suit any age group. The bottle is stylish; I can’t make my mind up if I like it.

DKNY Be Delicious by Donna Karan

I first sampled Be Delicious in a ferry duty free shop, and I loved it immediately. Along with my friends I tested lots of fragrances, although it was difficult to stick to just a couple of smells. This fragrance stood out as being different from the others, although it was one of the priciest. I think it’s the apple and melon that make it really fruity without being too heavy, and long lasting. It smells lovely on everyone, and I would recommend it for any age group. I am not keen on the bottle. It looks great, but I prefer the old-fashioned kind of bottle with a lids that is less fiddly.

Cool Water Woman by Davidoff

This is a loveley fruity fragrance, I particularly like the pineapple and melon. I think it is a young scent because it is not too heavy. I first smelt it on a work mate and it stood out as being different from everyone else, fresh without being too cloying. I work in a small office and it is difficult finding something that is strong enough to linger but which does not overpower everyone else's perfume. I do prefer the fruity smells although I sometimes wonder if it would be easier to rub a slice of cucumber behind your ear. I also love the blue bottle -I do think a bottle ought to look like a bottle - you shouldn't neee a degree in mechanics to work out how to get the lid on and off! anything going in and out of your handbag (along with the kitchen sink) needs to be practical.
